Unless Catholic churches are built respecting geographical position ...

"Speaking at a conference on the liturgy in London yesterday, Cardinal Robert Sarah, the highest authority on the topic in the Catholic Church under Pope Francis, asked all bishops and priests to adopt the ancient posture in the Mass where the priest faces the tabernacle along with the congregation, rather than facing the people."

Doesn't say a thing about "east"

I like the old ways. It was much more reverend than todays rock and roll and feely touchy ceremony. It sure isn’t mass.

It does, but I think it’s a confusion. I don’t think he is saying facing East is special, unless all catholic churches are oriented the same way.

“..the faithful turned together in the same direction—Eastwards or at least towards the apse—to the Lord who comes, in those parts of the liturgical rites when we are addressing God..”

“East” here means “liturgical east”; that is, toward the altar. It’s a fine thing if that’s the same as compass east, but that’s not what Cdl Sarah means.

Dumb. In some churches the priest would face the congregation, some the left, the right, the wall, 10degrees in between, 20 degrees, 5 degrees, etc. Don’t like the direction? go to another church.

Is this another way of telling them to face mecca?

It does mention “eastwards” later in the article. What confuses me is he speaking of doing this within parts of the Novus Ordo mass? It doesn’t seem like he is referring to the Latin Mass which would already have this orientation.

Big improvement over the clown mass I suppose.

No. This is "Ad orientem" (toward the "east"):

The opposite is "versus populum":

Your own pastoral judgement will determine how and when this is possible, but perhaps beginning this on the first Sunday of Advent this year… may be a very good time to do this. Dear Fathers, we should listen again to the lament of God proclaimed by the prophet Jeremiah: “they have turned their back to me” (2:27). Let us turn again towards the Lord!

I believe you are correct in that he is talking about all Masses, Novus Ordo, included.

I still stick my tongue out to receive Communion.

Talk to God have faith. He misses hearing from you.

It is what is important.

The rest is human and not related to your soul.

Regardless of what the faithless have to say.

Love God. Love Your Fellow man.

Brotherhood......

Jesus held back the bully.

ANNIHILATE mecca.

Yeah the Novus Ordo.

Maybe some folks in older churches will finally figure out what those strangely ornate “backpieces” are doing at the back of the sanctuary.

“Oh!! That’s an altar!!!”

I read all this and the comments, but I’m post-Vatican 2, and I still ask: why east?

I’m trying to figure out how this all works. Wouldn’t the answer simply be to bag the NOM and return to the TLM? Why is he continuing to push the NOM...albeit a modified version? Are the “conservative” prelates now pushing a “hybrid”?

Good for him; we will see how widely this is implemented by this time next year. I’d say that would be a good test. I kind of suspect there won’t be much change, at least not in the US or other western countries.

It seems to me that the question to answer here is how “binding” is what Cdl Sarah said? Does it boil down to simply a request, or does what he said carry more weight than a request?
