Pope insists conscience, not rules, must lead faithful

Pope Francis said Friday that Catholics should look to their own consciences more than Vatican rules to negotiate the complexities of sex, marriage and family life, demanding the church shift its emphasis from doctrine to mercy in confronting some of the thorniest issues facing the faithful.

In a major church document entitled “The Joy of Love,” Francis made no explicit change in church doctrine and upheld church teaching on the lifelong bond of marriage between a man and a woman.

But in selectively citing his predecessors and emphasizing his own teachings in strategically placed footnotes, Francis made innovative openings in pastoral practice for Catholics who civilly remarry and signaled that he wants nothing short of a revolution in the way priests guide Catholics. He said the church must no longer sit in judgment and “throw stones” at those who fail to live up to the Gospel’s ideals of marriage and family life. […]

On thorny issues such as contraception, Francis stressed that a couple’s individual conscience — not dogmatic rules imposed on them across the board — must guide their decisions and the church’s pastoral practice. “We have been called to form consciences, not replace to them,” he said. …

So we have gone from the bold vision of John Paul II and the intellectual rigor of Benedict XVI to someone who preaches little more than “follow your heart”?

This Pope either does not know his Bible or feels no obligation to follow its teachings.

It’s arguable now that the Westboro Baptist Church is closer to the sensus fidei than Pope Francis on these matters.

Never thought I’d say this, but the faithful would be less scandalized following the ravings of the Phelps clan than this apostolic exhortation.

He always forgets the part about “well formed” conscience. An understanding of right and wrong based on solid principles proposed by competent authorities.
Look it up.
If someone’s conscience tells them that it’s OK to kill one’s spouse, the law will soon set that person straight.
By doing this, he sets himself apart from Catholic teachings, and renders himself unfit to be pope.

Another reiteration of the Pope’s apparent position that the church is obsolete and unnecessary. It used to be comical to say “is the Pope catholic?” as a response to a question with an obvious answer. I am not so sure that one will work anymore.

1Cor 5:12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.”[

A few thoughts.

1) Everything we read is an interpretation though the liberal press. Never forget that. Their goal is to create a problem.

2) It would have been better to say guided by the Holy Sprit and Bible. I think very few see value in ritual, including God, He want our hearts and minds.

Rom_7:6 But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.

Real Catholics and that includes the real Catholic bishops will ignore his latest ramblings on watering down the faith. The democrat operatives in America calling themselves bishops will leap with joy. Donna Wuerl is happy.

You ought to read it, rather than MSM headlines. He condemned same sex marriage, changed nothing for divorced people. I’ll bet not a one of the journalists who wrote the articles actually read it. He basically said that you don’t condemn or kick them out, but to be open to ministering to them and include them in the church. Forming a conscience means conforming to Catholic teaching, not doing whatever you want!

In other words, the journalists don’t have any idea what they are writing about. Go to a Catholic news site, and they will tell you nothing changed, which is not what the MSM wanted to see happen.
