Joy is at the heart of why we defend life and offer loving alternatives to abortion.

But it’s always nice to get some encouragement from Planned Parenthood – a sign by the driveway reads “smile, you are on video camera.”

The Naples leaders have reported that Planned Parenthood is anything but smiling. They’ve had workers come out and harass and reprimand volunteers who are peacefully and quietly praying. I don’t think their mood is going to improve, since Florida just voted to defund Planned Parenthood.

While in Naples, I was joined by two men who make 40 Days for Life possible in so many locations – Tom Brejcha and Peter Breen of the Thomas More Society, who are currently defending David Daleiden, the video investigator who exposed Planned Parenthood scandals.

Abortion remains illegal in most circumstances in Ireland, but the large UK abortion business Marie Stopes maintains a referral office in Dublin, where the 40 Days for Life vigil is held.

Carolyn, the local leader, is also the director of Gianna Care crisis pregnancy centre. This campaign has seen three women who changed their minds and have received help there. Marie Stopes is open just 3 or 4 days a week. They do scans, but don’t show the pictures to the mothers.

A recent election here has remained inconclusive, but there is likely to be a referendum on keeping the pro-life part of the constitution. The pro-life movement here is concerned, following the abortion law change in 2013.

I was on the radio a couple of times and met Youth Defence, who have campaigned vigorously for decades. Everyone is extremely friendly and pleasant here and I was touched with the warmth of the welcome.

The cultural difference between Ireland and the UK, which in practice has abortion on demand, is astonishing. Ireland has largely held out against abortion, and I hope that may long continue.

“It was a busy day at Reproductive Health Services,” said Michelle, the 40 Days for Life leader in Montgomery.

One of the volunteers was able to meet a young woman and offer her an information packet as she pulled into the driveway.

“She parked and sat in her car for about ten minutes,” he said. “Then she got out and walked directly toward me.”

She said she wasn’t sure why she was considering an abortion. She has been praying and asking God for a sign as for what to do. She noted that as she pulled in and stopped, the volunteer told her, “God says to trust Him.”

“You were my sign,” she said.

She stood there with two vigil participants for almost half an hour, openly sharing her story, weeping and hugging them.

They gave her a baby blanket and encouraged her to continue trusting God.

“She has my contact information and promised to stay in touch and send me pictures,” the volunteer said. “Please pray for this young woman and her family.”

Over the years, many of the 40 Days for Life volunteers in St. Louis have met – and taken a liking to – a member of Planned Parenthood’s janitorial staff.

“Our sidewalk counselors often encounter him,” said Brian, the local leader in St. Louis. “He always passes by us with a smile, a kind word, sometimes even a joke. It is truly one of the most amiable exchanges between sidewalk counselor and Planned Parenthood staff that I’ve witnessed.”

But recently, as he was leaving work, this man passed by one of the volunteers … seeming to be in a bit of a hurry. With an apologetic smile, he whispered, “I was told I can’t talk to you anymore, or I’ll get fired. They said I was consorting with the enemy.”

“What Planned Parenthood has failed to recognize in all of this is that we are not their enemy,” Brian said, “nor is the battle line of this fight the boundary which extends between our side of the fence and theirs. Rather, we are ALL brothers and sisters.”

He added that it’s good to “remember the truth about the identity of those working within Planned Parenthood – that they, just as we, are sons and daughters of God in need of His boundless mercy.”

“We had the good fortune to chat with a couple college students who decided to pull over and stand with us,” said Steve in Plano.

However, they were standing in front of Planned Parenthood with pro-choice signs.

They said they were libertarians, which provided an opening for one of the vigil participants. He was also a libertarian, he said – and that’s why he was against abortion.

Abortion supporters often use the “it’s my body” argument. But the two young men agreed that there are cases in which individual freedom can be constrained – drunk driving laws, for instance, that take into account the rights of other drivers who do not consent to share the road with intoxicated motorists.

The same principle, they were told, applies to unborn babies, who have not consented to being aborted. Of course, at that point the two questioned whether the unborn have any rights.

The 40 Days for Life volunteer then quoted from the Declaration of Independence: “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.”

The vigil participant emphasized “created equal,” not “born equal.”

The young men then objected that the baby is not conscious. The two were asked if they’d ever had surgery. And one had.

“Were you under anesthesia?” a volunteer asked.

“Yes, I was,” the young man answered.

“Would it be okay if while you were under anesthesia the doctor decided to murder you because you are unconscious and you won’t be aware of it?”

“Of course not!” the young man answered.

“A second ago, you said consciousness was the barometer to determine whether it’s okay to murder. If you’re not conscious, why is it wrong for a doctor to kill you?”

“Because I will regain consciousness,” the college student answered.

“Exactly. And if left alone, the babies will become fully conscious – if they’re not already.”

After chatting for a long time, the two college students thanked the 40 Days for Life participants for talking with them. One even shared his email requesting more information. They said they were surprised and pleased that they were allowed to ask questions and share their views without being ridiculed.

“Folks, when the pro-choicers show up with their signs, that is a blessing,” Steve said. “It’s a blessing because whether they realize it or not, they’re often being called by God … and sometimes these encounters lead to spiritual conversions … because the Holy Spirit is at work on the grass.”

DAY 41: Centers closed … babies saved

There are 471 reasons to celebrate now that this 40 Days for Life campaign has drawn to a close!

That’s how many babies have been saved from abortion – that we know of!

Here are more reasons to celebrate – 40 Days for Life locations where abortion centers CLOSED!

Today’s short video shows the celebration in Jacksonville, North Carolina after an abortion facility that had been in business for decades suddenly announced its closure.

Plus … an abortion business in Indiana where numerous 40 Days for Life vigils were held over the years closed its doors just this past Friday!

Earlier in the campaign, two facilities in Georgia – in Augusta and Marietta – also shut down.

Praise God for these blessings!
