Reminds me of a quote, and I’m paraphrasing; Good people do good things and evil people do evil things, but in order for good people to do evil things, it takes religion.

Who can understand the “mind” of God? God is God, not a touchy "feely" God that is easily duped and manipulated, but the only pure/perfect “form” of righteousness and justice. That is more of a wonderment than attempting to project our humanity onto God on why He ordered all that wet-work against (Again human projection) "innocent" children. Big mistake, because Job wondered the same and got a very different answer from what he expected.

The simplest answer would conclude God's total war tactics involved killing everyone and everything in order to prevent revenge or retribution. God was trying to lead His chosen people to victory and peace, just as He promised. Unfortunately His chosen people became stubborn and gave into their sensations.

Also examine John 9:41, and think how Christ will judge those who were “blind” from a Spiritual perspective.

My guess is that He is very lenient with children concerning His Spiritual judgment. Remember, the next life is way more important to the temporal one.
