German Synod Group Criticises ‘Harsh and Merciless’ Attitudes to Divorced and Homosexuals

The group provided detailed suggestions for divorced and civilly remarried Catholics who want to receive the sacraments

When presenting its third synod report, the German-language group has said its members felt called to admit that “in an ill-conceived attempt to respect the doctrine of the Church, repeatedly we have had harsh and merciless pastoral attitudes that created suffering, especially for unwed mothers and child born out of wedlock,” cohabiting couples, homosexual persons and those who are divorced and civilly remarried.

“As bishops in our Church, we ask forgiveness,” said the report unanimously approved by the group’s members, including Cardinal Gerhard Muller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Cardinal Walter Kasper, a theologian and former president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

The German-speaking group also provided detailed suggestions for responding to divorced and civilly remarried Catholics who want to receive the sacraments but, members said, “the discussions demonstrated that there are no simple and general solutions.”

They cited St John Paul II’s statement in the 1981 exhortation Familiaris Consortio, that pastors “must know that, for the sake of truth, they are obliged to exercise careful discernment of situations. There is in fact a difference between those who have sincerely tried to save their first marriage and have been unjustly abandoned, and those who through their own grave fault have destroyed a canonically valid marriage. Finally, there are those who have entered into a second union for the sake of the children’s upbringing, and who are sometimes subjectively certain in conscience that their previous and irreparably destroyed marriage had never been valid.”

Together with a qualified priest, the German group said, such Catholics should be led through a deep examination of conscience, reflection and repentance. Among other questions, they should look at how the crisis.....

As usual, no mention of the virtue of chastity and the practice of continence nor encouragement for those heroic individuals who live out these virtues amidst personal sacrifice. Since these functional agnostics deny the power of God's grace to transform lives, they're left to rage against "doctrine" and to grovel before the zeitgeist. The unrelenting focus on homosexuality speaks volumes.

Sodomites welcomed at Communion is the end of the RC Church.

it sure beats the jizya, stoning, beheading, hobbling, and gang raping that rounds out muslim mercy towards infidels.

Responsible exegetes see conditions that can result in biblically legitimate cases of divorce and remarriage. This is not true of sodomy, which is unconditionally condemned. It is not helpful to discuss the two matters in a single context.

Not helpful to the cause of Christ, but very helpful to the destruction of Christianity.

The bishops feel guilty about their “harsh and merciless” actions. Make everyone feel guilty and ashamed in order to give cover for their eventual capitulation (embracing?) to sodomy. They argue directly against some “harsh and merciless” mean and nasty god that makes them feel all yucky inside.

As an aside, I suppose it happens, but has anyone seen this “harsh and merciless” action actually happen? Never once in my 55 years have I witnessed a harsh and merciless defense of doctrine from any of my pastors. Instead I see silence, apathy, and pandering. God’s righteousness will never change.

That’s my problem with these guys. What Jesus said about divorce and adultery is clear. What the Bible says about homosexual activity is clear.

It seems to me that the duty of the church is to spread the word of God. And then mercy or grace is up to God.

These guys seem to either disbelieve the Bible or to assume the role of God, or both.

"These guys seem to either disbelieve the Bible or to assume the role of God, or both."

In any event these people are clearly ashamed of these teachings of Jesus. And Jesus said, "If you are ashamed of me before men then I will be ashamed of you before the Father."

The Church exists to give man the opportunity to conform to God’s image.

The Church does not exist to conform to man’s image of what is acceptable.

Don’t join the church if you can’t live up to the standards.

Keep in mind, that only the dissenters are the ones you are hearing about. They will not allow homo marriage, or divorced and remarried Catholics in.

They have shortened up the amount of time to get an annulment, but never changed any of the doctrine.

All of this has been the pro homo media trying to emphasize what’s going on, just as they did when the Pope was here.

I guess we'll see at the conclusion of the Synod when Francis does whatever it is he's going to do. Making these things a "local" issue is the same as approving them.

Confirming a person in his sin is hardly merciful, nor is it loving...

Just saying...

Marx said that the German bishops were unanimous, but I find it hard to believe that Mueller would go along with this.

While not wanting to start a fight here, let's just say that the Bible predicts all this at the end of days.

We know from Zech 11:17 that the "Worthless Shepard" will leave the flock, have a wounded arm and blind eye. We know that Daniel 11:32 says he will corrupt with flattery and in Verse 37, he will not regard God, be homosexual, and conceited.

Knowing there will be a "falling away" of the church in the latter days, IMO, this is what they are talking about. Instead of the church changing the culture, the culture will change the church. In Isiah 4:1, it says there will come a day when churches( women) will eat their own food( make their own doctrine), and declare their own righteousness( call evil good, and good evil), but still want to be called "Christian"( take His name). As the churches with collars and robes, take on sodomy in their midst, the real Christians will have to break away or take on the plagues coming to the mainline denominations. The "whore of Babylon" is the world church that goes along to get along. It is the church that fornicates with the kings of the earth. In Revelation 18:4 an angel begs for the ones that have been left behind to suffer the Wrath of God to "come out of her" or suffer as the lost have suffered. You can either hang on to your church denomination, or hang on to Jesus, but not both.

  1. It is a strategic mistake to combine homosexual behavior with divorce and remarriage.
  2. Catholics solve divorce and remarriage by investigating whether the prior marriage was sacramental. If not, the previous marriage is considered null, as if it never happened with God, and it is not an impediment to remarriage. This is a process of the Catholic Church and, as such, is subject to change.

The homo-clergy running the Synod have combined divorce and sodomy. Please don’t lecture those who are merely responding to the their actions.

Anyone with eyes to see realize the ultimate goal is the mainstreaming of sodomy, just as it is in secular society. Here is the order of this “journey”:

1.) Acceptance of casual sex.
2.) Acceptance of divorce.
3.) Acceptance of sodomy.
4.) Acceptance of man-boy sodomy.

Don’t kid yourselves. This is the road society is on. This is where the homo-bishops wish to take us.

And it will not end in some sort of sodomite utopia, as they imagine.

It will end in blood and fire, death and destruction.
