Vatican sacks priest after he comes out as gay

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican dismissed a priest from his post in a Holy See office on Saturday after he told a newspaper he was gay and urged the Catholic Church to change its stance on homosexuality.

Monsignor Krzystof Charamsa was removed from his position at the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican's doctrinal arm where he had worked since 2003, a statement said.

Charamsa, 43, and a Polish theologian, announced he was gay and had a partner in a long interview with Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper on Saturday.

He later held a news conference with his partner, a Spanish man, and gay activists at a Rome restaurant. They had planned a demonstration in front of the Vatican but changed the venue several hours before it was due to have started.

[The Vatican] said giving the interview and the planned demonstration was "grave and irresponsible" given their timing on the eve of a synod of bishops who will discuss family issues, including how to reach out to gays.

It said his actions would subject the synod, which Pope Francis is due to open on Sunday, to "undue media pressure".

The issue of homosexuality and the Church has dominated the aftermath of the pope's visit to the United States last week.

[snip]

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is not a sin but that homosexual acts are.

The Vatican has been embarrassed by controversy over the pope's meeting with Kim Davis, a Kentucky county clerk who went to jail in September for refusing to honor a U.S. Supreme Court ruling and issue same-sex marriage licences.

So he was removed from the CDF. Waiting for the other shoe to fall.

As if we haven't had shoes falling thud-thud-thud all around us for weeks. Man, this Gays vs Catholicism story is a centipede.

He knew that homosexuality is frowned upon, and yet he still became a priest. So sick of these liberals infiltrating institutions they disagree with and trying to destroy them from within. So much for live and let live!

So he broke his vow of Celibacy, also his vow of Obedience to God, and his vow of Obedience to the Pope.

But the Vatican is evil for removing him.

I give them credit for removing this man. I wonder if it was solely for being outspoken and if the “mafia” has other m Myers still in place?

Still, I’m pleased for your church faithful.

I swam the Tiber to get rid of these creeps. Now they have crossed the Rubicon.

Lombardi's statement was singularly unimpressive:
With regard to the declarations and interview given by Msgr. Krzystof Charamsa it should be observed that, notwithstanding the respect due to the events and personal situations, and reflections on the issue, the decision to make such a pointed statement on the eve of the opening of the Synod appears very serious and irresponsible, since it aims to subject the Synod assembly to undue media pressure. Msgr. Charamsa will certainly be unable to continue to carry out his previous work in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Pontifical universities, while the other aspects of his situation shall remain the competence of his diocesan Ordinary.

Note that Lombardi did not affirm the teaching of the Church. He was upset that Charamsa made a "pointed" statement at the opening of the Synod.

Just had to make that correction.

as in the days of Rome, they have infiltrated our politics and our churches. We know the end result and its coming soon.

But what does Francis “who am I to judge” think? So far all I read was that “the Vatican” removed this priest. Is that like “the Vatican” saying Francis’ meeting with Davis was not an endorsement?

Of course!! That's exactly what the practicing homosexual wanted as the outcome to be.

I've long said (dating back more than ten years now) that the end goal of homosexuals has always been to bring down or "convert" the Catholic church to a more radical, leftist/homosexual agenda.

The Catholic church is the biggest target for the militant, radical, leftist homosexuals to bring down. Their logic is that once the Catholic church falls, all other churches will simply give up fighting them.

The Catholic church must not, and can not yield to the militant, radical leftist homosexuals in the Church. Any time one comes forward they should be ex-communicated as quickly as possible. The Catholic Church really needs to take the lead and set the example, IMO.

“The Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is not a sin but that homosexual acts are.”

That makes sense if you accept that the Church also demonstrates its position that abortion is not a sin by not excommunicating its child-killing members—in fact allowing them communion—but in the sermon that same day they preach that killing is wrong.

Agreed. He could have joined a cafeteria style mainline Protestant church like our Episcopal Church and been perfectly content.

Removing him from the CDF is a start but they really had no option, even in the current crazy climate. However, an active homosexual, who is not only flagrantly breaking his priestly vow of chastity but also shamelessly promoting sodomy, must have his priestly faculties completely suspended.

Eventual laicization is the only proper outcome here. I'll be surprised if it comes to that but I hope I'm wrong.

Sorry, I had to make another correction. "Homosexual" is still too antiseptic. Additionally, if deliberately confuses those those who merely suffer from same-sex attraction with those who engage in sodomy.

Yes, I’ve never understood that laxity about abortion. It’s like saying, “I’m opposed to killing Jews, but I wouldn’t want to impose my values on others.” The wanton, willing, and premeditated murder of an innocent life is murder.

Thanks. Now I will return the favor by giving you a frank and honest (the way I see it) answer to your question: I think it probably was mainly because he admitted publicly that he "is gay". If he had stayed silent, probably nothing would happen.

Unfortunately I think (at least in the States if not abroad) there is too much of a tendency to follow an unwritten (even unsaid) policy of "don't ask don't tell" as far as candidates and ordained priests go.

I don't think technically there is anything "wrong" with having priests with same sex attraction, but in practice it doesn't seem like a good idea. Not only because there does seem to be a correspondence between same sex attraction and the pederasty that has plagued the Church, but even for more practical reasons such as: how could such a man truly council a married couple? How could such a man say that attending seminary or even living with another priest in some rectory somewhere wasn't an occasion to sin for him?

No, "gay" men should not be priests. They bring too much baggage to the game so to speak. I hope and pray the Church will be more proactive about this in the future.

We agree on this... both points.

It appears the outed priest had a partner, which seems to go against the requirements of the priesthood - meaning more than same sex attraction.
