Given the total number of muslims who make the Haj each year I am surprised the number is this low.
Considering the total number of haji that is a fairly low mortality rate.
If dying during the Haj guarantees your place in paradise then obviously the Haj needs more death pits so more can enter paradise...
Ive flown into Jeddah a few times during the Haj....and its a mess!

AFP has more details of the stoning the devil ritual, during which the stampede occurred:
...The ritual emulates the Prophet Abraham, who is said to have stoned the devil at three locations when he tried to dissuade Abraham from God’s order to sacrifice his son Ishmael.
At the last moment, God spares the boy, sending a sheep to be sacrificed in his place.
The world’s Muslims commemorated Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son by slaughtering cows, sheep and other animals on Thursday.

The Saudis are the only game in town in Mecca. The hajj is a tremendous moneymaker for those who enjoy a complete monopoly on the central event in Islam.
So why shouldn’t they cram as many hajjis into as little space as possible?
