Hi.
I woke up yesterday and was talking on the phone with a friend who was watching the Pope's visit. She said, "Oh, by the way, Yogi Berra died."
Let us say that I reacted strongly.
Mass media has done something for us. It has connected us with people we'll never meet on this earth, and sometimes makes them feel like part of the family. You didn't have to love the Yankees to love Yogi Berra. Despite his fame, he was a simple (not in the sense of dumb, please don't misunderstand!), humble family man who was able to laugh at himself. He loved kids; he loved baseball and the kind of harmless fun it represented in his heyday- and he admired his fellow players.
To support his family, he and buddy Phil Rizzuto operated a bowling alley to make money. You had to love the game back then-it didn't pay much. In later years, he did commercials, most of which celebrated his gaffes. Maybe the gaffes were part of what was so endearing: they were misworded, but still somehow made sense. Plus it made him human and easy to identify with. He reminded me of someone I'd be related to.
I could go on, but for now, I'm just asking for prayers for his soul from my fellow Catholics; and for all of us, not to forget that once there was a really nice fellow named Larry Berra, lovingly known as Yogi.
Thanks, fellow FReepers! It just needed to be said...
G-d ♡ bless you!

Beautifully said. Joining you in prayer for Mr. Berra...he was truly a national treasure.
There are just a handful of people that bring a smile to my face when I think of them, such as Yogi Berra and Johnny Carson.
Then there are others that I smile because I’m glad they’re gone to meet their maker.
Please share...
I heard he took a bullet at Normandy but didn’t claim a purple heart because he didn’t want to worry his mother.
Thank you for this post.
Prayers for the family, and may Mr. Berra rest in eternal peace. He gave us all enjoyment as we watched him play for all those years.
God bless you!
He sure was a treasure! We need more of his kind in the world! God bless you!
That sounds like him! He was something special, in so many ways!
Apparently though, he did provide entertainment to very many people who morn his passing.
They have my condolences.
If you get a chance, check out more, maybe at the Yankees site or on You Tube. He was quite a character- but even more so, quite a nice human being...
He was a wonderful model for the kids who followed baseball in those days.
May he rest in peace.
My favorite Berra-ism is “Deja Vu all over again”......................
You must be very young to not know who Yogi Berra was..........................
Indeed we do but I afraid that mold is broken and cannot be put together again. Lawrence "Yogi" Berra was one of kind. RIP Yog!
I remember mentioning Yogi Berra to a neighborhood chum, and a younger neighbor kid got all excited to hear there was a human named after Yogi Bear
RIP Yogi. You were truly one of a kind
Yogi was one of the many that symbolized a much more simple time, an I’ll offer, happier time - that time of my parents and my youth.
The story goes, once Berra was giving directions to his house when he uttered that famous line, “when you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
Now that sounds illogical, but actually, no matter which way you went at that fork, you would still end up at his house.
Rest in peace, Mr. Berra.
Another Berra-ism:
“The future ain’t what it used to be!”...........................
