Rivkah Would not Bow to Francis : How does Francis Respond?

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin paid a visit to Pope Francis in Rome, accompanied by his personal secretary Rivkah – an Orthodox-Jewish woman. When a person usually greets the pope, they shake his hand and bow down. But when Rivkah’s turn came to greet the pope, she explained to him that for religious reasons she could not shake his hand, nor could she bow down since he was wearing a cross. The pope then covered his cross with his hand, and bowed down to her!

It’s helpful to look up what is written about rash judgment, slander, etc. in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Life in Christ”, Part Three, Article 8.

I recommend you consult Francis' Little Book of Insults, before you start casting stones in his name.

“ad nauseum”?
..................................

Perhaps I misunderstood your original post. If that’s the case, I offer something from St. Ignatius of Loyola that may benefit both me and you:
“Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another’s statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved.”

I already know Who told us not to cast stones.

Why do you accuse me of “casting stones
in his name”.

Reading comprehension.

The pope then covered his cross with his hand, and bowed down to her!

“The anti-Catholic bigotry is really getting out of hand here on FR, despite Jim Robinson’s recent dictate.”

I know, these (open, non-Caucus) Catholic-bashing threads started by Catholics must stop at once!

“Is there any protocol among people any more? Shouldn’t all this be worked out in advance so that people don’t embarrass or humiliate each other?”

Good point, miss marmelstein. One wonders.

Ugh. No. Such an assumption about me would be unfounded and inaccurate.

I can only speak for myself when I comment on Ms Rivkah’s reported actions... But I based my original comments on the appearance that she (the personal Secretary of a prominent statesman) attended some sort of reception for the Pope only to tell him she couldn’t shake his hand or greet him according to custom. Why not just stand in the back, or not attend at all? Seemed a little pompous and grandstanding on her part. Let her boss handle the meeting. The pope for his part handled it with some aplomb for being put on the spot.

That’s all. Relax.

I’d NEVER bow or curtsey on greeting ANY royalty btw

My impression is that through most of even American history, bowing was the courteous gesture of gentlemen upon meeting (and parting); ladies at least nodded in acknowledgement. And the Pope's "bow" looks like more of a nod to me. Of course, the only sources that comes to mind is Louisa May Alcott books and historical novels and movies. ;-)

G-d blinded the Jews to not know who he was so he could save the rest of us.

..................

Many Orthodox Jews follow the laws of Negiah, which forbid physical contact with a member of the opposite sex, other than family members. This does not apply to matters of life or death, or employment such as doctors. And like everything else, is followed by varying degrees. Some will shake hands, some under certain circumstances only, some won't even sit next to someone of the opposite sex for fear of contact.

Reading other articles, several indicate this issue was discussed prior to the meeting. It wasn't a surprise, in all liklihood the Pope's response was anticipated. It's not the first time a Pope has met with a Jew, or that this "issue" has come up. I haven't a clue why he would hide the cross and suspect posters stating it was an accident unrelated are correct. It's my understanding the Pope bows to all individuals in this type of reception line

You know. You’re right. Next time I will put a Catholic Caucus on it. The constant comments about not bowing to a pope was annoying and irrelevant.

That is half the equation; it also bashed the Pope. I despise antisemitism.
