Bishop Roger Foys: Stop Holding Hands! (during Our Father)
http://www.praytellblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/2011-Pastoral-Letter-with-Decree-Bulletin-Ins ^ | 11/18/11 | Most Reverend Roger J. Foys, D. D. Bishop of Covington

Special note should also be made concerning the gesture for the Our Father. Only the priest is given the instruction to “extend” his hands. Neither the deacon nor the lay faithful are instructed to do this. No gesture is prescribed for the lay faithful in the Roman Missal; nor the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, therefore the extending or holding of hands by the faithful should not be performed.

Believe me that day any preacher, priest, father, clergyman tells me I can't hold my wife hands during worship service because of some legalist reason

The objection is not to spouses holding hands to express affection, but to people grabbing the hands of the stranger next to them during the Lord's Prayer, as though that were some sort of gesture that was required or prescribed by the liturgy. (I have actually been told by people that this was an "obligation" imposed by the "faith". Uh, sorry, no, it isn't.)

I'm sure that's very nice, I like that my husband and I can pray together too. But what does kissing and holding hands have to do with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass?

Don't you see that you have just changed your focus from the altar and what occurred there moments before - that Christ has just been made present, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity - and redirected it to each other?

It's just not the time or the place for PDA.

This 2011 Bishops statement was never enforced, so naturally the hand holding and the people taking over even the priests orans posture for themselves is now rampant. So much so that I heard or read that the USCCB will be approving hand holding in the Novice Ordo.

Since the priests have been quite cowardly to teach and admonish, of course, all the creativity during the Mass is now called “local custom”.

What a crock.

FYI, you probably already know that The Fraternal Society of Saint Peter, (FSSP) is not the same as SSPX.

The FSSP is highly regarded and growing in the USA, especially now that the Mass has become so secularized.

You can believe anything you want....but the plain reading in the Greek says no such thing... Tradition may say that, but Gods word does not... To each his own.... God bless you...

Yeah, the Bible does say that and I have no idea of who changed Christ's Aramaic words into Greek, nor do I care....He said what He said and if the Greeks can't figure it out....too bad

I was taught the hand holding was extraneous to the Mass, not approved, that the communal act is clearly in the one Holy Communion, befitting the movement of the Holy Sacrifice occurring at the Alter, to our reception of the Eucharist.

The unchecked creative gestures instituted by the laity is out of hand, and due to the deplorable laxity of priests to teach proper postures, has increased to now the laity taking over the priest’s orans posture.

Priests are flattering their flock and piety is suffering.

How sweet.

However, the Mass was not always about spousal moments, pleasantries, affections, or greeting rows of individuals during the Mass.

We have fallen hard and fast in our obvious attractions for and imitations of the Protestants preferences for how we “feel”, including primarily the warm and fuzzies.

Ridiculous.

Oops, Novus Ordo. Sorry about that. I wrote “Novice” Ordo.

I have no idea of who changed Christ's Aramaic words into Greek, nor do I care.

Seriously...?

You might want to bone up on how we got the New Testament writings.

He said what He said and if the Greeks can't figure it out....too bad

Seriously...?

Yeah, them darn Greeks really screwed up...

Honestly, being a Catholic you should have at least a basic understanding of the history of Scripture and the context of when they were written...

I'm sure your priest can help you out...

Your reply was the kind that is intended to shock and not to advance the conversation. I ignored it for awhile but it occurred to me today at Mass that I do believe that the RC Church has, for most of its history, ignored the Body of Christ and that the hand holding and greeting and even kissing some of those around us is the sort of physical outreach that pleases God. We are all co-heirs with Christ in the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Reaching out to others around me at that point in the Mass is part of me praying that we all move towards Christ as the Church Militant. In other words, I can and do pray with my body as well as my mind and heart. If it doesn’t work for you that way then stand in the back or go to a church where that sort of interacting does not occur. I’m pretty sure that the Protestants do hugs, hand holding and kissing before during and after their services so you probably will have to go to a Latin Mass and stare straight ahead.

Actually, I think it’s you who ignores the Body of Christ. And I do think you and your husband would be more comfortable in a protestant church. There is no Body of Christ in their churches.
