How to Go to Heaven

May 12, 2015 |

Sometimes people make it sound like the Catholic understanding of how to get to heaven is really complex.

It’s not.

While you can go into any of Christ’s teachings in a lot of very rich detail, he made sure that this one can be understood even by a child.

I can summarize it in two sentences.

The two sentences are these: To come to God and be saved, you need to repent, have faith, and be baptized. If you commit mortal sin, you need to repent, have faith, and go to confession.

That’s it. That’s all there is to it. And we can show each of these things from the Bible.

The need to repent is shown by the fact that, right at the beginning of his ministry, Jesus began preaching the gospel, saying “repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:14-15).

The need for faith is shown when the author of the letter to the Hebrews writes that “Without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Heb. 11:6).

And the need for baptism is shown when St. Peter flatly tells us: “Baptism now saves you” (1 Peter 3:21).

So that’s what you need to do if you want to come to God and be saved: Repent, have faith, and be baptized.

If you do these things, you’ll be in a state of grace, and as long as you remain in a state of grace, you’ll go to heaven.

But we still have free will, and we can still turn our backs on God and fall from grace, to use St. Paul’s phrase (Galatians 5:4).

St. Paul is very clear about the possibility of us committing mortal sin. He tells us: “Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

To turn away from God and commit mortal sin is the opposite of repenting. So when we fall into mortal sin, we need to turn back to God—to repent again.

We also need to have faith.

And then we need to go to confession. This is something Jesus indicated just after he rose from the dead. He came to his disciples, breathed on them, and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:22-23)

So Jesus empowered his ministers to forgive or retain sins. In order for a priest to know whether he is to forgive or retain a sin, he needs to know about the sin and whether we have repented of it. That means we need to go and tell him these things, and so we have the sacrament of confession.

So that’s what you need to do. To come to God and be saved, you need to repent, have faith, and be baptized. If you commit mortal sin, you need to repent, have faith, and go to confession.

It’s all thoroughly biblical.

I see NOTHING in #615 to support a JUDGMENT before the GWT one.

When I say the phrase, my first thought is this from the Articles of Religion of the C. of E.
HOLY Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. In the name of the holy Scripture we do understand those Canonical Books of the Old and New Testament, of whose authority was never any doubt in the Church.

Well, it is not the same thing as occurs att he GWT, for the first clue. Note what Paul said about deeds done int he body (to the believers, not the unsaved). The second clue is related to what I posted for you earlier regarding the wedding in Jewish style. The Bride to be is taken to the Father of the Bridegroom’s house where she has a cleansing ‘baptism’ before putting on the pure white garments for the wedding proper. The analogy was referred to by Paul then he clarified with the ‘wood, hay, and stubble explanation. Add to that the precious stones, gold, and silver which adorn the New Jerusalem are just the sort of ‘rewards the translated to Heaven believers will donate tot he adornment of the New Jerusalem which arrives well before the GWT. You should really try that dispensational tool and read more of your Bible. wink wink

How can you possibly say, "half empty?" Why doesn't YOUR church get a smaller glass? Answer me!

How do you know there's a glass? Were YOU there when it was made?

My church had glasses in the big inning. They were full when WE got there. If they're half empty, it's because of YOUR CHURCH! YOU are to blame.

What version do you use? (I've asked you a dozen times and you keep changing the question!)

Answer me.

Recently, I converted to Contrarian. Half my congregation thinks it's half-empty, the other half, half-full. We switch sides each week. If half the church shows up we make concessions.

"Vitrum Fall" vs. "Vitrum dimidium fuerit."

What about evaporation? ANSWER ME!

Here are some websites you should read:
Google
Yahoo
Bing
Bash-A-Faith

I would print them here and now, but I'm not online.

"Why is the glass half full?" you ask.
WE baptize by:

sprinkling.

THERE, PAL I ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW? FEELING SMUG?

A-N-S-W-E-R M-E!

... and STOP BASHING ME!

Well that’s what children do though when overwhelmed in not getting their way. ...Adults do that as well when in conflicts among themselves they cannot handle...they call the police.

So you would think people would call on God when they are overwhelmed....rather than the RM or the owner....but then considering some are accustomed to earthly authorities for ‘everything’ then it’s understandable they would not. Especially if God might be telling them something they don’t want to hear.

But STILL no judgement FOUND that predates the GWT one.

I thought I showed that...The GWT takes place when the earth and the heavens are destroyed...At the end of the existence Creation...

This biblically is after the 1000 year reign of Jesus on the earth...

The Great Tribulation leads into that Millennial reign...

The Wedding to the Bride (church) takes place during the Tribulation...At some point prior to the Tribulation the Bride has to make it to heaven for the Wedding...There will be no one in the Wedding who has any sort of sin on him/her...

That purging of the bad works done by Christians will be done at the Judgment Seat of Christ which has to take place before Christians can go to the Wedding...That has to be before the Tribulation...That has to be during/after the Rapture...

There is at least a thousand years between the GWT and the Judgment of Jesus Christ...

At the GWT it will be God/the Trinity who passes judgment...At the Judgment Seat of Christ, God the Father will not be there...Only Jesus...

It's like when I prepared for my wedding...The best man looked me over good to make sure I was in top notch shape to meet my bride...Same with the Judgment Seat of Christ...He's going to clean us up to meet the Father...

Isn’t it odd that this so important and vital aspect of life for Catholics, this interaction with an assumed Mary, is not found in the Scriptures, when even the assumption of Elijah and Enoch is found there?

And more to the point, that it IS present in paganism and the occult, predating 'christianity'...

There is a huge difference in expressing an opinion and bashing. It helps if we know the difference.

It certain would help. Therefore please provide a list of anti-Catholic bashing which has been seen the like by Catholics against Protestants.

Instead of being able to defend your beliefs you run to the owner and RMs to lock down the thread. And it's not the first time you've run crying to the RM either. I know you've tried to have some of my threads pulled in the past.

And even complaining to the owner, which resulted in ignoring the years of constant Catholic threads and multiplicity of posts engaging in Prot "bashing" (as would be defined as such if said about Catholicism), and instead only threads by Evangelicals were clearly censured.

As after years of constant Catholic threads and multiplicity of posts engaging in Prot "bashing" were implicitly sanctioned, if not their content, and only threads by Evangelicals were clearly censured, then a message of pro-Catholic moderation has been sent, intentional or not.

Coherency being a goal, I could say that "bashing" has been defined as including articles which substantiated Reformation doctrine and refuted that of Rome (such as sola scriptura versus sola ecclesia). Thus the like by Caths must also be considered as such. However, it remains to be seen they will see such "bashing" and this anti--bashing rule (of the first thread) as applying to them.

However, as it was the daily bashing that was censured, then an occasional apologetic may be considered as allowed, except that in another thread attacking fellow conservatives was broadly condemned, which could be understood as forbidding any sectarian disputes. Which i think would be a loss.

I just LOVE this sentence:

HOLY Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation:
so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby,
is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith,
or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation.

I noticed that you never answered my question but instead turned it around and tried to put me in the hot seat with your subtle but derogatory comments about the Catholic Church. Nice try, but please, just answer the question. I truly want to know.
