It is not unfair to say that in the older form of the Roman Rite (especially low Mass) the people were so uninvolved as to be almost unnecessary, an afterthought.

That's not how I remember it; of course, then as now your involvement is pretty much your own look-out! I remember daily Mass especially as very intense and focused, much more so than the Novus Ordo.

The Mrs. finds low Mass positively sublime. You’re absolutely right about intense and focused.

On the other hand, I don’t think I would have liked it much to be in a parish where the responses were just given by the servers and not the congregation. I think the Dialogue Mass idea gets it just about perfect.
