Gay marriage will split the Catholic Church
The Spectator ^ | 05-23-2015 | Damian Thompson

Ireland, for so long the most overtly Catholic state in Western Europe, has voted for gay marriage by a stupendous margin – 62 per cent. Never before has a country legalised the practice by popular vote.

It would be naive to ask: how could this happen? Hatred of the Church is one of the central features of modern Ireland, thanks not only to the paedophile scandals but also to the joyless quasi-Jansenist character of the Irish Church, which was handed complete control of education in the Free State after partition in 1922. (Many of its priests were outstandingly holy and charitable, but you’ll get your head bitten off if you suggest that in today’s anti-clerical republic.)

Anyway, I don’t want to focus on Ireland. Homosexuality as an issue is a greater threat to the Catholic Church worldwide than the sex abuse scandals. Here’s why:

"In the whole of Romans 1, First Corinthians 6, and Matthew 10 I find no reference to homosexuality."

Pro-gay activists argue that there is no equivalent word of the Engilsh word homosexual in either Hebrew or Greek. So I use the term same-sex.

"Do you see what I'm getting at?"

Yes. But Pope Francis is a question mark imo.

This is a good thing. The wolves in the church are outed by openly supporting this sin.

By Catholic, can I assume you are referring to Roman Catholics?

When Jesus speaks of marriage he mentions a man and a woman.

Gay rights advocates take advantage of those ignore of scripture.

Remember in Ireland it was not the Catholic Church that voted in gay marriage it was the people.

Exactly! The Church spoke out strongly against it.

I wonder how many of our U.S. tax dollars were spent in Ireland to help the gay activists there?

Why are the Irish absolutely giddy in their celebration of state sanctioned homo-sexual marriages? It’s not like the repeal of prohibition or a declaration of independence that most people go gaga over. I am scratching my head over the gushing.

Because today’s indoctrinated, socio-leftists believe that rights come from the government. It also makes all kinds of sexual activity “OK” in the eyes of many because the government now sanctions it.

I think the Irish need to prove how “modern” they are. The shame of being a backward little country so late in history is what they are reacting to.

Not likely. People who accept homosexuality and its hazards have already left Christianity.

A reminder to people that the Catholic Church can often be quite ethnic in its approach.

Ireland also hates America - this after years of immigration to these shores in order for them to prosper rather than live in poverty. If you don’t believe me (and many Freepers don’t) check out the comment sections of the Irish newspapers as well as the Irish-American ones (The Irish Echo for instance). They’ve gone off the rails big time!

I submit also that they are giddy simply because, in my opinion, the Irish have always been poets, dreamers and blatherers. They now have this fancy new topic they can gush about the country and isn’t it grand?

It’s funny: we Americans have this fascination and attachment to a mythical Ireland. Look at all the festivals and parades and long list of Irish-themed movies we put out.

The truth is, they are cranky and standoffish when I have visited and they don’t give a green damn if your grandmother came from there.

Well, now they can get their tourist dollars from gay couples and they can forget me and my family.
