We are not saved by believing we are saved. If the view that one who believes is already saved and could never be lost is correct, then there is no downside for the one who believes but also believes he could be lost if he fell away. If, on the contrary, the view that one can never fall from grace is incorrect, then there is tremendous downside to the believer who falsely trusts that he can never fall from grace, and becomes lazy, unfaithful and unwise through the deceitfulness of sin. I also believe there is no way to perfectly “work” your way to salvation.
BUT, although I acknowledge the above I will still try my best to do the good works I know God wants me to do, not to earn my way into heaven, but because I know it's what God wants of me.
And not a one of those says that our salvation hangs on doing those good works, or that we lost our salvation if we don’t.
Mathew 25
