The Habits of Your Temperament

Print PDF

What is your temperament? Depending on your temperament, you can be more prone to exhibit certain virtues and positive qualities, as well as face stronger temptations to fall into certain sins or vices. See the chart below to learn about the bright side and dark side of your temperament.

Throughout the day, you are constantly faced with the choice: God or not God. Every time you exercise the virtues and gifts of the “bright side” of your temperament, you choose and glorify God. When you exercise the sins and vices of the “dark side” of your temperament, you essentially choose “not God.”

After reflecting on the bright side and dark side of your temperament, ask yourself this: What active steps can I take to practice the bright side of my temperament and choose God? What active steps can I take to break the habits of the dark side of my temperament, which make me choose not God?

*Click on italicized “dark side” items for quick tips on dealing with these sins and vices. Consider printing the quick tip to stick in your pocket, wallet, purse, or to post on your mirror or fridge as a reminder to work on improving yourself in that way. We highly recommend the book Saintly Solutions to Life’s Common Problems, where you can get more great, in-depth advice on how to deal with difficulties in your life.

One of the “girls on phlegm” (1980s song reference, showing my age!)

Although, any one of us can react in ways when the need is there that are atypical for us, we tend to have a temperament that does not really change through our lives.

Basically, cholerics are goal oriented. They always have a need to be doing something. Melancholics have a need to be always solving a problem. Sanguines are always wanting to find somebody to talk to or seek out new situations. Phlegmatics like to have things calm.

Or you need to clear your throat and have a good deep cough!

There are a few people who seem to draw qualities from all four categories. Usually, it’s because they are highly phlegmatic and that their secondary quality is flavouring their primary temperament.

Most of us are at least a little bit multi-temperamental.

Thanks for simplifying.

powerful cholerics
popular sanguines
peaceful phlegmatics
perfectionistic melancholies

I'm a melancholy-phlegmatic blend
