Time To Worry: Americans Are Turning Away From Christianity
PJ Media ^ | 05-12-2015 | Michael van der Galien

The last several decades, the Left has done its best to change America’s religious landscape. According to a new Pew study, they’re succeeding better than many thought possible:

"The number of Americans who don’t affiliate with a particular religion has grown to 56 million in recent years, making the faith group researchers call “nones” the second-largest in total numbers behind evangelicals, according to a Pew Research Center study released Tuesday."

Christians are still the majority, but their numbers have fallen from 78 percent to just under 71 percent. The main reason? Increasingly more Americans consider themselves “non affiliated” with any particular religion.

The good news? This doesn’t automatically mean that Americans have become atheists. There is a large group of people who consider themselves to be ‘spiritual’ and who believe there’s likely a God, but who just don’t have a bond with any particular religion.

Sadly, that’s all the good news I’ve got for today:

"Last year, 31 percent of “nones” said they were atheist or agnostic, compared to 25 percent in 2007, and the percentage who said religion was important to them dropped."

In short, there are fewer religious people and those who don’t consider themselves ‘religious’ in the traditional sense are moving towards atheism — fast.

Not so.

That may not be in line with your experience, but according to the poll results, the Catholic Church in America is losing 6.5 members for every new member that joins. Mainline "christian" churches like the Episcopal Church, Church or Christ, etc., are losing 1.7 members for every new member. Black Protestant churches are losing 1.6 members for every new member. However, evangelical churches are gaining 1.2 new members for every member that leaves.

>>>There are, probably in reality, far less than 71% actual Christians in this country.

Oh yeah....that's a very safe bet.

I think we must (in these instances) differentiate from "cultural Christians" and "Biblical Christians."

There are MANY out there (just look at any Barna survey) who identify as Christians...but when you look at their Theology, the fact they don't believe the Bible is God's Word, some who say Jesus sinned (which shows an absolute ignorance of Biblical Salvation)...and the rest...we are left with the conclusion that only about 1/3-1/2 of those who say they are Christians actually are.

I would say that about 25% of the nation are actually "Christian" - IOW...Christian by God's definition and will be in heaven.

And now we know why polls like this are not trustworthy.

Stop confusing people with data. Talking points are better...

IF the Catholic Church is growing in American, it is doing so through immigration...not from natural born American citizens....and I would dare say that the majority of those joining are CINO's...

Impossible if they are truly Christian.

All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.

People who do not marry remain absorbed in their own little universes.

Strange, since the Episcopalians now encourage a lot of meat-eating (not to mention what their male members do with fudge).

The significance of Darwin was that it convince many educated people that the Bible was a mythology. Before that time, only Liberal theologians held to that view. The prestige of science was that it seemed to them to explain much more than it actually does. What I have always found so wonderful is how so much “science”: economics, sociology, psychology, anthropology, archeology, etc. is based some much on mere classification, and inconclusive evidence.

“The Left does seem to be taking quite a few victory laps over this today.”

That’s doesn’t make it look any less true.

It’s very discouraging that our standard response to bad news is to pretend it isn’t true. The Left may be celebrating today, but that’s because they faced their bad news with open eyes a decade ago. We could learn something from their tactics at least.
