Restaurant chain invites the pope (and you) to try its Lent menu

How’s this for an unusual marketing gimmick:

Red Robin is hoping to lure Catholics who are abstaining from meat during Lent by presenting its latest seafood menu — even inviting Pope Francis to lunch.

And other fast food restaurants are jumping on the Lent wagon as well.

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc., based in Greenwood Village, Colorado, extended an invitation to the pope on Wednesday as it introduced its new “Wild Pacific” crab cake burger.

The company released a statement “joyfully” extending an invitation to the pope to eat at Red Robin during the Lenten season.

“If His Holiness accepts and visits any U.S. location between February 18 and April 2, Red Robin will offer The Wild Pacific Crab Cake Burger to guests for free, while supplies last, on the remaining Fridays during Lent,” the company said.

There are more than 500 Red Robin restaurants in the U.S. and Canada.

What are other restaurants doing to reel in Catholics during Lent?  Read on.

Looks great! I always feel guilty during Lent because I am a very good vegetarian and seafood cook, and I suspect we actually eat better during Lent than when we can eat meat!

Half my family is Catholic. The other half is Lutheran.

I’m allergic to fish, so if we were at the Catholic side during Lent, I got the hot dogs and they got the salmon cakes. Used to make me jealous, but I can’t eat it.

I love Old Bay! It’s very popular here in New England.

No.... really? I thought New Englanders boiled everything? (not being snotty.. it is just what I thought). We send some to our friends in Wisconsin who happened to try it when they were in Maryland. They can’t live without it now. When my daughter was in Louisiana, she was enjoying fried alligator and shrimp but she requested Old Bay. Good thing she is cute and young! They only use Zatarains (or so she was told).

I’m allergic to fish

Well ... no problem. Go Italian. Eggplant parmigiano, spaghetti aglio & olio, pasta with steamed artichokes, eggplant stuffed peppers. Go Chinese. Egg foo young, buddha's delight, hot & sour soup. There is more to good eating than fish and meat.

My family is German.

Lets just say the cooking options were limited.

I spent a few years in New Mexico, and discovered spices.

Yeah, we abstain from meat on Fridays so that we suffer by eating seafood dishes like crabcakes. These people do not get it.

Serving “Lentil” soup?

Sure but, even better, the Lebanese lentil dish "Mujadara".

Lebanese Lentils, Rice and Caramelized Onions (Mujadara)

On Good Friday, our parish hosts a meatless lenten meal and this dish is always among the most popular. Give it a try!
