Along with Pope Francis and so many others, I was deeply saddened to learn of the latest violence by fanatics who see anybody who disagrees with them as their enemy.
These attacks threaten civilization itself.
Whether it’s a massacre in Paris, Indonesia, Nigeria, Syria, Iraq, Iran, India or now in Libya and Egypt, we keep saying, “How much worse can it get?”
And then we woke up Monday morning to see that it did get worse, with this brutal massacre of these young Egyptian Christians in Libya.
They were beheaded for nothing less than their religious convictions. It moves me to prayers. It moves me to tears, yes, as a Christian, but also as an American, who recognizes religious freedom as “our first and most cherished liberty.”
No denying it: There is an orchestrated phobia of Christianity throughout the world today, a coordinated effort on behalf of fanatics to see that true religion which stands for friendship, peace, the dignity of the human person and the sacredness of human life, is stamped out.
These aren’t sporadic attacks. This is part of an orchestrated fanaticism, an ideology that sees Christianity, Judaism and any religion of peace as the enemy.
Fanatics want to take over, and we can’t let that happen. They threaten civilization, everything that is decent and noble about humanity. It is a worldwide crisis that cannot, must not, be ignored.

Yes. And when we get ourselves a real President, maybe we’ll take these slimes out. We are the only real force for good anywhere on the planet and our duty is right there in front of us.
This is a repeat of the rise of NAZI-ism.
We will, once again, wait until the threat is so large that it will cost the lives of millions to end.
Civilization is under Islamic attack - still - 1400 years later.

My question is, “When will American Christians declare enough is enough, pledge their lives and their wealth and come together to take up arms and fight this evil?”. I hope I’m there to witness it.

Still, neither Dolan nor the Pope can bring themselves to say the word Islam or call Muslims to account for their behavior.
The Pope gave a particularly foolish homily today in which he said that “all human beings are capable of going so far as even to destroy brotherhood” (I guess that’s the new way of saying beheading?) and that it was, actually, all the fault of international commerce and the arms trade. I wasn’t aware that things like gasoline and knives were the stock in trade of international arms dealers, but in case you wonder where the jihadis got them...well, the Pope has answered that one in his usual brilliant way. And it’s the fault of “all of us,” in case you wondered if the jihadis were really responsible for their acts.
Maybe for once it is a hopeful sign that the Church will start to view Islam as a religion from the devil for a change.
Or as the old saying that is so much is seen in stores where “delicate” stuff is sold, “you break it, you OWN it.”
So the Muslims OWN this.
Not to be picky, but honoring a saint by marching with perverts threatens the civilization. A knife to the throat does not threaten, it kills.

I'd like to address the term "brotherhood" here. It was a term that was used in the Church and even in ads on television by other groups back in my day.
I was instructed as a Catholic that brotherhood meant that we were all God's children, made in His Image and Likeness, and that the color of a person's skin, what they believed, and where their family came from should not stop us from being good to them, even sticking up for them if they got picked on. Simplistic, sure. It was geared toward kids, but that's how I was raised.
Catholics get criticized for the Crusades; now the Pope gets criticized for not doing enough to fight the Muslims. Is he expected to gather up an army? Should he encourage more hatred? All he can do is be an example of kindness. We're going to need that in the times to come, because, if we hate, even if we are persecuted, then the enemies- both the jihadists and the devil himself- will have won.
