It seems that most of the commentators here have missed the point.

“It is a sign of strength to be able to laugh at some traits of the institution to which we belong, because it is a way of saying that what we value is beyond always transient and imperfect forms.”

OK class: compare and contrast the way these Catholics react to satirical cartoons about their faith, to the ways radical Muslims react to satirical cartoons about their faith. Which group is the most mature, civilized, and worthy of emulation?

It amazes me what people go through these days to come off as being drooling, blithering idiots. Everybody wants to be an idiots. Like being a sexual deviant, being an idiot is “in” in today’s world.

I heard the Charlie Hebdo’s special edition features Mohammed with a tear running from his eye. Talk about giving in to the terrorists. So they go from making fun of Mohammed into making him a sympathetic figure. They dishonor their slain coworkers and what they stood for. Unless the cartoons inside the magazine are different, it sounds like the terrorists won.

Now you can make fun of Catholics with the Jesuit priests blessing, but not Mohammed.

Exactly. Although - if they wanted to take it a bit further they could explain or clarify some of the possible images (I couldn’t get it to load).

Well, I don’t pretend to understand their thinking for sure, but perhaps they are trying to shame the terrorists by having their “prophet” apologize for their behavior? and the “all is forgiven” probably needs a sarcasm tag.

French Jesuits are just as stupid and American Jesuits.

Although I might agree with you, I need to point out a common failure of intellect.
Any opinion might be interesting.
Opinions without a dollop of backup rational justification for criticism, not so much.

Catholics haven’t attacked Charlie Hebdo, so why would they need to prove anything?

The Muslims won’t see it as— gee, look Catholics will even print the cartoons themselves! Aren’t the Catholics righteous, comfortable with their religion and have a good sense of humor.

The ones that this display is meant to target and teach will look at as a show as Catholics think so little of their religion that they would do such a filthy thing. The Islamist think different.

They can post a thousand anti-Catholic cartoons and they won’t get so much as someone even throwing a punch, but leave it to liberals to still insist “every religion has extremists just like Islam”.

Subtlety is totally lost on the "knee jerk brigade..."

In the mean time, Pope Francis said :
Because it is not possible to find Jesus outside the Church. The great Paul VI said: "Wanting to live with Jesus without the Church, following Jesus outside of the Church, loving Jesus without the Church is an absurd dichotomy." And the Mother Church that gives us Jesus gives us our identity that is not only a seal, it is a belonging. Identity means belonging. This belonging to the Church is beautiful.

which fits with the constant, traditional, teaching of the Church.

Funny how things that fit a particular agenda spread like wildfire and those that don't are ignored. Seems like as many people who claim to be solid Catholics pick and choose what they make sure spreads far and wide the same way the MSM does.

This should give the Very Famous Moderate Muslims an idea.

They could show their support for Free Speech and their criticism of the Very Famous Radical Muslims by publishing some satirical Muslim comics of their own.

(insert sound of crickets chirping here)

The Pope is a Jesuit, but it’s pretty meaningless. When a member of a religious order becomes a bishop, he is released from his vows. He is no longer a subject of any superior in the order he belonged to.

It definitely does NOT mean that the Jesuits suddenly have all sorts of power and influence in the Vatican.

The Jesuits are dying out, fast. The youngest Jesuit in Spain is 75 years old, or will be in several years. All that will remain of the Jesuits in another 20 years is cemeteries and apostate universities that the Jesuits sold to the Muslim Brotherhood years ago.

Your yawn is precisely the point. When a faith is so fragile that it cannot stand criticism and mandates the murder of anyone who rejects it, or a supposed prophet of the all powerful God must be revenged in blood for all insult, even when such "insults" are facts drawn from the very book his followers consider holy, then there's something awfully damned (in the strictest sense) wrong with both.

Of course it's pointless for these Jesuits to post these cartoons. Even if you can follow the French slang (jokes are especially hard to translate) it's impossible they would shame Muslims by showing them how tolerant we are to blasphemy. But it does contrast a confident religion to one that just can't stand up to competition of any sort.

In other words, hey Muslims, you're all nothing but a bunch of pu$$ies and your prophet sucks a$$ and swallows!

Bergoglio was a Jesuit.

When a religious becomes a bishop, he is released from his religious vows, and no longer has a superior in his former order.
