United Church of Christ minister: Planned Parenthood Does “Sacred Work” of “Love” and “Justice”
Clinic Quotes ^ | August 23, 2014 | Sarah Terzo

Tom Davis, who is an ordained minister with the United Church of Christ and a chaplain and professor at Skidmore College:

“I contend that Planned Parenthood is engaged in a form of sacred work, the work, that is, of securing reproductive justice for women… Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is thoroughly secular. But when it comes to the issue of sacred work, that doesn’t matter. The scripture is clear about one thing: sacred work, the work of justice, is sacred no matter who does it.… In the biblical view, sacred work is love, and in practical social realities, sacred work is justice.”

Tom Davis Sacred Work: Planned Parenthood and Its Clergy Alliances (New Brunswick, New Jersey: Rutgers University Press, 2005) 6 – 7

Only quirk I know of {if it’s still that way} is no musical instruments allowed at services.

Depending the size of the Church of course but the singing is some of the most beautiful Church music I have heard.

Like most sects, the Church of Christ (not the UCC) is convinced that it alone is the true Christianity, but at least they don't burn everyone else as heretics.

The no-musical-instruments, however, hearkens back to the time of Ambrose: it was a compromise between those who wanted music in the church because the Bible says so, and those who didn't want music in the church because the music of the late Roman Empire was associated with activities as raunchy as those for which most popular music is associated today. By removing the instruments, Christians wouldn't be giving the impression that they approved of raunchiness, but by singing their praise, they would be fulfilling God's command.

My mom visited one once and in the sunday school they said believing in the Trinity was optional, that it really didn’t matter

Huh?? Belief in the Triune godhead separates Christians from non-Christians

from wikipedia The UCC often uses four words to describe itself: "Christian, Reformed, Congregational and Evangelical".

and the churches of christ entry is confusing -- some are Mormons, others have such varied beliefs I can't figure out what they believe in

*8Tom Davis, who is an ordained minister with the United Church of Christ and a chaplain and professor at Skidmore College: **

1 — They need to remove him from the teaching staff.

2 — He should no longer be an ordained minister since he doesn’t know the Commandments.

“Thou shalt not kill.”

Yes, it said so at one time but then it didn’t.

Amos 5
23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols, many translations calls it noise.

I personally don’t think there is any biblical mandate to remove instruments from worship, but I do love the sound of human voices praising God together. Also, if it helps remove some of the “performance” mindset that is growing in churches, then maybe that’s a good thing. Strong worship is great, but it can so easily stray into “watch ME, God!” instead of “watch HIM, people!”
