apostles didn't make that distinction St. Paul, for example, wrote of the blood in the Eucharist without hesitation, and he was present at the Jerusalem council also:
Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. (1 Cor. 11:27)

1 Corinthians 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. No where in that verse does it say they are eating flesh or drinking blood. They are eating bread and drinking the cup which Jesus Himself said was "the fruit of the vine". The bread and wine are spiritually symbolic of the flesh and blood of Christ.
