Probably a better term would be Syrian, or Levantine, or even Canaanite. Whatever. Lord knows there was a constant mixing of people in the Levant by the various conquerors. But Israelite might be most appropriate. We hear a lot about the “Lost Tribes” of Israel, meaning the Northern Kingdom, but the story of Tobit reminds us that even in the North, there was a minority who still made pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and who kept that alliance even in Exile. In any case. Mel Gibson created a fact for Christ that, it seems to me, right for a Jewish man of that time and place. One, that also belongs to the man on the Shroud.
