Apparently we have a lot of liberals here on FR.

Many, if not most, appear to be connected in some way with the RCC from Rome, Italy.

I'm a Noachide.

Regarding law number 6:

Never considered eating a limb from an animal whose heart was still beating...until today.

The idea just never has come up before.

I can understand why some FReepers (I'm not one of them) might think that any visual representation of Jesus Christ is sinful.

Is this true? I'm 68 and haven't heard this until this thread today.

I think the images of "christ" are idols.. sinful if one "honors" them with candles, flowers or a kneeler..

A football team can be one's idol. Many things can be, if one places more importance on them than they do on their belief in and their following of the Lord Jesus Christ or if any thing or interest interferes with their committment to Christ.

I can think of no one I know who worships a ceramic or carved idol or picture representation of Jesus Christ instead of the actual Lord Jesus Christ. Also, the former Roman Catholics I know do not value these images more than their relationship to God through Jesus Christ.

So, I ponder which church was and is being warned against idols.

I believe that Midde'Oraita' the prohibition ceases when the animal dies, but Midderabbanan even when the animal dies the meat remains forbidden forever. Someone who knowingly ate meat from an animal that was still alive when dismembered, regardless of how long afterwards, would be in violation of this commandment.

Furthermore, Halakhically for Noachide purposes death occurs when all limbs stop moving (other than just nervous spasms). Thus unfortunately there is no way of knowing whether most meat in the non-Jewish world really is permitted or not. But as I understand it, one is obligated to abstain only when one is sure of this and it is not the burden of the eater to know this for certain.

For Jews an animal is permitted immediately after shechitah, and most authorities hold that kosher meat is permitted for non-Jews.

Fish don't even require killing to be eaten. They are permitted immediately upon removal from the water.

No need for an apology. You’ve seen things I’ve not that have profoundly affected you in ways I was not.

In no way was I arguing with you; we have had different experiences that have affected us in different ways.

I have every respect for your wish to avoid even the hint of worshipping an idol and commend you for it. The first leaders of the Christian church warned the gentiles (that’s me) to avoid idolatry.

Like I tried to say, for a Christian such as myself, what to eat and what not to eat has never been a question, unless I was eating with someone who would be offended at my partaking of something that was afront to them. Such as a vegetarian (Christian) or a Completed Jew (Christian) or someone such as yourself.

Yup; in that letter to them; found in ACTS chapter 15.

Though we’ve had our differences in the past, Elsie, I would NEVER say that to you.

First of all, Resettozero, I don’t think you should have been told to go away.

“you have no idea who he is”

I don’t agree with everything Francis has done. I don’t like the demotion of Cardinal Burke and the “Who am I to judge?” statement is being abused by liberal Catholics and secularists to affirm people in immoral behavior with the idea that the Pope is about to change Commandments, doctrine and dogma, which he has no power to do.

Having said that, I know a lot of people here don’t know who the Pope is because his positions are almost caricatured. What has he been saying lately? He has been saying families headed by homosexuals are not real families. He’s been saying there can be no such thing as gay marriage. Recently he said that the exiting of the father from the home is directly tied to social disintegration. He constantly condemns relativism. 99 out of 100 things he says are no different than what John Paul or Benedict were
saying. But here you get so much gossip, idle speculation, and erroneous interpretations of what he said. And then there are the mindreaders: Oh, this is what he really means and thinks.

I think people here are being manipulated about Pope Francis.

“Wonder if he is putting Benedict’s red shoes on the raffle block.”

Benedict’s red shoes are cheap knockoffs. They’re not Gucci. They were brought to him from a shop close to the Vatican.

This is a perfect example of erroneous information about the Popes being spread.

I did not know there was scandal or scorn over the ruby shoes.

He is selling his personal items for the poor. Good on him.

A lot of people have accused Benedict of having expensive tastes because of his red “Gucci” (actually inexpensive imitation) shoes, but I believe you didn’t know that, red.
