Pope ordered rejected paragraph on homosexuality retained in final Synod document: Cardinal Marx

Pope Francis has “pushed the door open” on the issues of homosexuality and Communion for the divorced and remarried, and no vote by a future Synod of Bishops is going to reverse it, according to one of the pope’s closest advisors. Cardinal Reinhard Marx, the president of the German Catholic Bishops’ Conference and a member of Pope Francis’ inner circle, said in an interview with Die Zeit that the pope himself had ordered the rejected paragraph on homosexuality to be retained in the Synod’s final document.

It was widely reported by the world’s press, including interviews with high-ranking prelates, that the paragraphs relating to homosexuality and Communion for divorced and remarried Catholics in the mid-term document aroused shock and outrage among some Synod fathers. The paragraphs asked whether the Church could learn to “accept” the homosexual “orientation.”

In the Synod’s final document, the fathers failed to approve a paragraph mentioning the Synod’s discussion of appropriate “pastoral attention” for homosexual persons and quoting Church teaching that homosexual unions are not “in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God's plan for marriage and family.”

Despite only garnering 118 out of 180 votes, and thus failing to meet the needed two-thirds majority, the Vatican included the paragraph in the published document along with the vote tally. Likewise, the document included a paragraph on the discussions about opening Communion to civilly ‘remarried’ divorcees that had failed to gain the needed votes.

According to Cardinal Marx, this was done with the approval of the pope.

“Up to now, these two issues have been absolutely non-negotiable. Although they had failed to get the two-thirds majority, the majority of the synod fathers had nevertheless voted in their favor,” he said.

“They are still part of the text,” Marx said. “I especially asked the pope about that, and the pope said he wanted all the points published together with all the voting results. He wanted everyone in the church to see where we stood.”

“No, this pope has pushed the doors open and the voting results at the end of the synod will not change that,” he said. Cardinal Marx added that it is in the coming year before the next session of the Synod that “the real work is about to begin.”

Despite media reports to the contrary, Marx said the “progressive” group at the Synod had not suffered any setbacks, and cited the pontificate of Francis as proof. “Anyone who comes to that conclusion has not had their eye on what has been going on in our church over the past one and a half years,” Marx said.

“This pope knows exactly what he is doing, let no one doubt that. Francis wants us to move. His frequent use of the word avanti – ‘get moving’ – is ample proof of that.”

Marx denied that there had been a clash between theological camps at the Synod, saying that the “logic of confrontation” would have been “un-Christian” and “unwise.”

Pray for the future of the Catholic Church. I pray that the church will overcome this latest “confusion” as Cardinal Burke calls it.

sort of stunned..

If this is true, huge destruction in the church-

Shows how far the homo agenda has gone- always

knew there was something wrong with the church keeping

outward homo priests- and not excommunicating them.

“...quoting Church teaching that homosexual unions are not ‘in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and family.’”

How is this bad? As I understand it, the Catholic church has stated for awhile now that the homosexual orientation isn’t the sin. It’s acting on it that’s the sin. They’re firmly against gay marriage, but still hold the position that celibate gays are doing alright.

That hasn’t changed.

I can see the divorce thing being a problem - mainly because it’s so prevalent.

This is a curious article and I am trying to understand the meaning of it.

If I understand it correctly (please let me know if I am off base), Paragraphs 55 and 56 were originally left out of the final Relatio (http://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2014/10/18/0770/03044.html) because the didn’t get majority approval.

However, it was in the document, according to the article, at the behest of the Pope. When reading the paragraphs in question, they pretty clearly spell out the Church’s position on “same sex marriage” (NO!), the treatment of homosexuals. Also, the article talks about “... asked whether the Church could learn to “accept” the homosexual “orientation.” That is nowhere to be found in the two paragraphs.

I don’t understand how Cardinal Marx thinks two paragraphs that clearly spell out Church teachings have “ “pushed the door open”.” I also don’t understand how reaffirming the Churches position changes it.

In short, I find this entire article very confusing, and not related to what was actually written in the Relatio.

So, are we to believe what this article is saying is that the Pope wants to keep as Catholic doctrine that homosexuality is an “orientation” and to be accepted in some fashion?

“They are still part of the text,” Marx said. “I especially asked the pope about that, and the pope said he wanted all the points published together with all the voting results.

Not exactly a huge fan of Francis, but seems from this story that his attitude was actually "just publish everything" and Marx and the media are interpreting that as a green light on the controverted paragraph.

Your mileage may vary.

I hear talking heads like Mike Church on Sirius, a real weak RCC apologist talk on and bring on other RCC authors and intellectuals, to bloviate on the fallacy of solo scriptura, how in his interpretation of church history leads him to believe the Pope, Saints, etc. must TEACH us what is real Christianity. That left to own interpretation and weak intellects we can be lead astray. How’s that sophism working out for you now Mike? Still think the Pope is God’s representative on earth Mike? Infallible as far as biblical and Christian doctrine? Love seeing know it all zealots hoisted on their own petard.

Your link explains it much better than the article that is the subject of this thread.

Solution is to let priests marry and put the pedophiles in jail.

Here you are, and welcome:

Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod

Having studied many denominations including RCC, this is the closest denomination I have found in the eastern mid-states region to the orignial apostolic faith. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ECLA) unfortunately has gone the way of the dithering Episcopalians, the Presbyterian Church-USA and the wobbly United Methodists.

Several friends have also found homes in the Orthodox Church.
