How I Lost Faith in the Pro-Choice Movement
ChurchPOP ^ | 2014 | Jennifer Fulwiler

I was sitting on a bean bag in my dorm room when I got the call.

It was a friend of mine — let’s call her “Sara” — and she was sobbing so hard it took me a moment to know who it was.

Finally, she pulled herself together enough to speak. With a voice that sounded as weary as if she had aged 100 years since the last time we talked, she said, “I’m pregnant.”

My heart sunk on her behalf. I was completely pro-choice and didn’t find the idea of abortion to be troubling, but I knew that she was not comfortable with it. She had always said that she respected other women’s rights to choose, but that she could never do that. Yet I also knew that she was not entirely thrilled with this guy she was dating, a young man named Rob. He was handsome and charismatic, but he had a serious drinking problem, and didn’t treat her with the respect she deserved.

All the more reason to sleep with him.

I see some similarities here with the republicans. They drink and party, lie cheat and steel to get into office and raise taxes, increase government and diminish rights then they don’t allow us to get out of their instinctual rape of the people. How do we abort republican morality?

How I Lost Faith in the Pro-Choice Movement

One day, tossing a baby into a meat grinder....seemed legit?!?

What else falls into this range of "legit"? Let us explore together!

It's all clear now!

Can't find DU?

I am totally disgusted with the Republicans. Chris Christye took out a lying add in the Colorado primary against Tom Tancredo and knocked him out of the election for Governor. Of the people by the people and for the people is not for the republican.

Don't think I am for the criminal democRats. I am more of a Libertarian. Give me liberty.

Dude, you are quite incoherent, and your spelling, to say nothing of your grasp on logic, is shockingly deficient. Steel is an iron alloy. Steal is a verb. The governor of NJ is Chris Christie. You say, "Give me liberty." For starters, you need someone to give you a place to sleep it off and the quiet in which to do it.

The governor of NJ is Chris Christie.

The governor of NJ interfered with the elections in Colorado with a lying ad against Tom Tancredo.

Christie is a fraud.

I was looking through a Time magazine article whose infograph cited data from the Guttmacher Institute about the most common reasons women have abortions. It immediately struck me that none of the factors on the list were conditions that we tell women to consider before engaging in sexual activity. Don’t have the money to raise a child? Don’t think your boyfriend would be a good father? Don’t feel ready to be a mother? Women were never encouraged to consider these factors before they had sex; only before they had a baby.

The fundamental truth of the pro-choice movement, from which all of its tenets flow, is that sex does not have to have life-altering consequences. I suddenly saw that it was the struggle to uphold this “truth” that led to all the shady dealings, all the fear of information, all the mental gymnastics that I’d observed.

Excellent article. Thanks for posting it. It has always seemed suspect to me why "pro-choicers/anti-lifers" shy away from wanting to fully inform women about ALL the aspects of abortion as well as their dismissal of the importance of teaching young women AND men the reasons for respecting their own bodies, the miracle of procreation and the benefits of abstinence. In truth, they really have NO respect for the lives and well being of women.

In the 90's, when we lived in Florida, there was an effort to push through legislation called "The Woman's Right to Know Act". I was flabbergasted to see all the resistance from Liberals in the Florida senate who claimed women already knew everything they needed to know and that making it mandatory to go over the facts before an abortion was done, would put "an undue burden" on women. It was said that to do so would be akin to saying women were stupid and couldn't make up their own choices. The one person who voted against the act moving out of committee was Charlie Crist - a Republican at the time. I've never forgotten that and it's infuriating to see the same insipid reasoning still going on. Women MUST be told the truth. Having volunteered at a crisis pregnancy center and led post-abortion healing groups, I can say that finding out the truth AFTER an abortion is one of the most damaging things a woman can experience. To NOT tell them the truth is deceiving them and it reaps a bitter harvest in ALL women as well as society. Thanks again for the article.

Very good article. The snipers posting here should read it. The writer was writing from her original point of ignorance initially.

Quite frankly I would like to see some republicans with some steel...

Speaking if which, four days ago my male kitten was converted into a congressional republican...

There is a reason I keep coming back here.

I think this is the reason why.

To see what happens next.

Seems legit.

The sad thing is despite all of the coffee, I kind of misinterpreted the title. But it was a legitimate mistake... I was on a roll by then.
