"Deuteronomy 12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. 31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God:"

=============================================================

Yes, and if you read just a wee bit further in that same "chapter 12" of the book of "Deuteronomy", you will see exactly what that means:

------------------------------------------------------------

When the Lord your God cuts off before you the nations whom you go in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, take heed that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do likewise.’    You shall not do so to the Lord your God; for every abominable thing which the Lord hates they have done for their gods;for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.

Deuteronomy 12:29-31

------------------------------------------------------------

(What they did in their worship of false "gods" was to burn their own sons and daughters in the fire to those "gods".   Of course, the real God did not want the people of Israel to do that evil practice for Him.)

(You have to read things in context.)

=============================================================
=============================================================
=============================================================

"It should be evident to anyone that taking something the pagans did to serve their gods was not to be used to serve the one true God unless He has specifically instituted a practice. So as an example let's take the "queen of heaven" concept which Catholics are required to believe. Was it a belief and practice by pagans? The answer is obviously yes.

Jeremiah 7:18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger."

=============================================================

Trying to equate the worship of the "goddess Ishtar" (which was done and mentioned by Jeremiah long before Mary was even born) with the noble honoring of Mary the Mother of Jesus, is outrageously preposterous.    It is worse than trying to equate the "elders" of Moab and the "elders" of Midian mentioned in Numbers 22:7 (who wanted to curse the people of God), with the "elders" mentioned several times in the book of Revelation (who passed on the prayers of the saints), an effort which, of course, is totally absurd.

“...why did Jerome retranslate?...”

The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew. Jewish scholars in Greece (Alexandria) translated it into Greek several hundred years BC because Greek was the common language in the entire region (including Israel) and used for commerce, learning, etc. This OT translation (into Greek) was done by 70 Jewish elders in Alexandria and INCLUDED THE SEPTUAGINT; in fact it was referred to as the Septuagint. Jesus quoted from this and the New Testament reflects this. Since Jesus referred to it, Martin Luther should have retained it as well; he had no business omitting it to suit his antinomian new doctrine.

St. Jerome translated this Greek version into Latin later (384 A.D.) in order to make it more accessible to the Latin speaking world.

Martin Luther used an early A.D. Jewish OT version that was suspect because the septuagint was removed (by the Jews) later on because it (the septuagint that the Jewish elders had retained and put into Greek) was causing (Jewish) people to convert to Christianity.

They do represent Jesus to the world...

That Jesus is the greco roman latin version washed of all things Torah..

And christendom aligns behind that jesus..

That Jesus was born on December 25.
That Jesus was killed on Good Friday
That Jesus was raised on Easter Sunday.

scripture tells us the Messiah was born on a New Moon Day ( Rev 12)
scripture tells us the Messiah laid His life down on the Feast of Passover.
scripture tells us the Messiah was raised on the Feast of First Fruits.

Jesus, as catholics worship and teach, has no ties to the New Moons, Sabbaths and Feasts that were fulfilled literally by the Messiah of Israel in scripture. (One can see that just in when Israel celebrates their feasts)

Instead, the catholic church has come up with their own holy days that are used ‘instead of’ or ‘in place of’ those in Torah.

The concordance I have shows that the Greek word ‘anti’ (as in Antichrist), can mean ‘instead of’ or ‘in place of’.

If that doesn’t describe the greco roman latin mother’s savior using sola scriptura, I don’t know what does..

Christnedom may be far closer to ‘sola popa’ than they want to admit..

And wouldn’t that be a gut punch to those christians who hate the popa or his office.

But after all, the world runs on a calendar named for a pope so maybe the entire world is more sola popa than it cares to admit..

Are you trying to make the ridiculous claim that every non-Catholic person who calls himself a Christian and reads the Bible has the exact same interpretation and understanding of the Bible as every other non-Catholic person who also calls himself a Christian and also reads the Bible?

God said not to serve Him with practices used to serve pagan gods. Hiding behind the comment "they even" doesn't change that fact. It's obvious the "they even" comment was separate only for illustrative purposes.

>>Trying to equate the worship of the "goddess Ishtar" (which was done and mentioned by Jeremiah long before Mary was even born) with the noble honoring of Mary the Mother of Jesus, is outrageously preposterous.<<

Then show where the apostles taught the concept of "queen of heaven".

Terycarl said "steer one person back to the Catholic Church and salvation." If I can speak for terycarl,I do not think this needs to be taken in an exclusive sense.

It would be like saying, "Steer one person back to the gas station at the corner of Firs Avenue and Main to get a good map." That doesn't mean the only possible maps are at the the First & Main gas station.

You’ve read these sorts of replies on here as much as I have, Mrs. Dono. It was meant in an exclusive sense, a review of posting histories will bear this out.

Because of the way the media spins the story. And the victims don’t care how it’s spun, as long as they get their payoff.

The Religion Forum certainly is the nastiest neighborhood at Free Republic.

This is a cause for shame. Ongoing shame. It probably means we should spend more time praying than posting. And more time loving than judging. Here I am, preaching to myself as Mrs. Don-o, offender.

"[Someone] posted many times a direct quote from Catholic sources which admit that pagan elements are incorporated into Catholicism."

I just said that. I's not a matter of "admitting" it. Nobody disputes it.

"I see no exceptions in Scripture where pagan elements are acceptable if they are *purified* or *sanctified* by the church.",p> You must have missed the part about St. Paul introducing, with approval, pagan verses into the New Testament.

Also many customs now practically universal among Christians, but found in pagan customs and not found in the New Testament. Such as having marriages in churches. I could multiply this example by dozens. "It really doesn’t matter to me what they say." That's the part I find most salient.

Typo. I didn’t mean to include, on the bottom, that quote written by somebody else.

when you answer a question with a question, it usually means that you don't know the answer to either of them.

Double standard duly noted because we ALL know the answer to that one.

Catholics allow themselves the liberty of their own personal interpretation of Scripture where the RCC does not oppose it, and yet deny non-Catholics the same freedom.

Catholic charity on display, I see.

Hi, sorry been busy with work and school. What I is was trying to say is that you people spend too much time concerned with sliming Catholics when there are much bigger problems.
