Bishops Reject Shift in Tone for Gay, Divorced Catholics Bishops Reject Language Highlighting Precious Support Committed Gay Couples Lend Each Other
DEBORAH BALL Oct. 18, 2014
ROMECatholic bishops voted Saturday to water down a report earlier this week that advocated a significant shift in the churchs approach to gays and divorced Catholics, reflecting a deep split within the churchs leadership.
In a vote Saturday evening, an assembly of nearly 200 bishops, who have been discussing issues concerning the family at a special meeting known as a synod, took their final vote on a working document released Monday. That document, released halfway through the two-week synod, proposed a far more open approach to gays and suggested a path back to the church for divorced Catholics who have remarried to receive communion.
The document had created waves for highlighting the precious support that committed gay couples lend to one another, using language that was far more open and welcoming than the Catholic Church has employed in the past when referring to homosexuals.
At the same time, the report suggested that remarried Catholics could receive communion after a period of penance. Currently, the church denies communion to Catholics who have remarried, unless their first marriage is annulled.
A final vote on the document showed broad support for the original sections regarding gays and remarried Catholics, but it fell short of the two-third majority needed to retain them in their original in the synods final report.
As a result of the vote, both portions were revised. The section originally applauding the precious support sometimes found in same-sex unions was dropped, replaced by language simply saying that gays must be welcomed with respect and delicacy. On the topic of remarried Catholics, the final document largely expresses the need for further study on a solution

But of course. They can alwaus go back to Confession and Communion. What you can't go back to is bigamous sexual relations.
This sounds flip, but it's not. I know a couple in my parish who are in one of these "irregular" divorce-remarriage union, who have discontinued sexual relations and are living like brother and sister for the sake of respect for their previous vows, their honor, and the honor of God.
I know this "honor" and "sanctity" thing is hard for the modern mind to accept.
It would be a lot easier to just buy a plenary indulgence. It’s probably been long enough that nobody remembers what it is, so the complaints would be minimal.
First the NYT is saddened. Now the WSJ is saddened. Oh well.
Not sure what you mean. You can’t buy a plenary indulgence.
And Pope Francis and Cardinal Kasper are saddened. Oh well.
I’m not saddened because God is in charge.
God is always in charge. He was in charge during the Great Flood. A great many people were saddened at that time.
One cannot buy indulgences of any kind and one of the requirements to obtain a plenary indulgence is a complete detachment from all sin.

Good for the Bishops in speaking out.

“Water down” a radical, falsified document completely changing Church teaching on personal sexual morality? Water away.
For anyone who understands the Real Presence, giving up the marital embrace when you’re not married is, in the big scheme of things, a very small price to pay to receive Him in the Holy Eucharist.
As well, indulgences only remit temporal punishment for sins already committed. Even if one could “buy” a plenary indulgence, for those involved in a second “marriage,” they'd need a new one every time they had sex with their partner.

That there was even something, within a purported Christan church, to reject is what’s so alarming.
Such proposals shouldn’t make it within a light year of the debate table of a real church.
Shallow comment. This is NOT the teaching of the Magisterium. It is about how one pastorally reaches out to some of the errant flock in a global church with ONE Credo and ONE Catechism. This, by the way is not a final draft.
Exactly. It’s not the teaching of the Magisterium. And that’s what’s so bad about it.
