Some Mormons pushing church on gay marriage

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Court decisions this week paving the way for same-sex marriage to become legal in dozens of states, including Mormon strongholds like Utah, Idaho and Nevada, have emboldened a growing group of Latter-day Saints who are pushing the conservative church to become more accepting of gay members.

The church's stance toward gays has softened considerably since it was one of the leading forces behind California's ban on gay marriage in 2008, but high-ranking leaders have reiterated time and again the faith's opposition to same-sex unions....

Already happening. Catholic Church schools being successfully sued for not hiring, or for terminating, openly gay teaching staff; Methodist-Church owned retreat enter which is a popular wedding reception venue, being successfully sued for turning down a gay wedding reception.

It didn't stop the Episcopal Church but it is killing the Episcopal Church.

I sang in an Episcopal Church for nearly 3 decades until recently. That church is dying. It is very gay friendly to the point of having gay commitment ceremonies. The gay community is supporting the church and since the minister is getting paid from that support he has no choice but to look for another job or be gay friendly.

Because the Mormons don't have to worry about a paid staff, they all apparently work for free, they are not as vulnerable to the gay pressures from their congregations. I hope they and others hold on and follow scripture instead of man. I would love to see the LDS Prophet make a very hard stand against gay marriage and say The Church will NEVER change. That should put the subject to rest.

I recently heard of a women's group that wanted to be ordained to the priesthood inside the LDS Church. The leader of that group was excommunicated, haven't heard anything about her since. I think the Mormons know how to play hard when they want to.

I left after the Gene Robinson thing. I don’t think it is the “paid” thing, the church is infested with libs. And if you speak out against it, you are criticized for not being a living Christian. Same “blackmail” as the race card.

I saw all that and understood well what was said, but if they would say “it will never change”, it should stop the pushing.

Unchanging Standards of Morality

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that God has established clear standards of morality for His children, who are accountable before Him for their behavior. Such standards cannot be changed by the reasoning, emotions, personal interests, or opinions of mortal beings.[10] Without the higher authority of God, as revealed in scripture and by His prophets, secular society will flounder and drift.

Many advocates of same-sex marriage argue that traditional standards of sexual morality have changed and that “tolerance” requires that these new standards be recognized and codified in law. If tolerance is defined as showing kindness for others and respect for differing viewpoints, it is an important value in all democratic societies. But as Elder Dallin H. Oaks has observed, “Tolerance does not require abandoning one’s standards or one’s opinions on political or public policy choices. Tolerance is a way of reacting to diversity, not a command to insulate it from examination.”[11]

The Savior taught that we should love the sinner without condoning the sin. In the case of the woman taken in adultery, He treated her kindly but exhorted her to “sin no more.”[12] His example manifested the highest love possible.

In addition to using the argument of tolerance to advocate redefining marriage, proponents have advanced the argument of “equality before the law.” No mortal law, however, can override or nullify the moral standards established by God. Nor can the laws of men change the natural, innate differences between the genders or deny the close biological and social link between procreation and marriage.

But I think you’re asking if it will go away. No, it won’t. Satan will always rage against that which is right and true, no matter which religions teach said truth.

But will churches be sued over not participating in homosexual marriage, in their doctrines not allowing same, in their doctrines calling it sinful behavior?

Of course.

I suspect at some point the IRS will revoke tax exemptions for such organizations, just as the gumment revoked trademark protection for the Washington Redskins.

I find it humorous that “respectable” churches and center-right commentators are now endorsing gay marriage. The pretense was that they were not on board with it all along...

Attacking people for one reason or another, including sex outside of marriage, didn’t start or stop with the medieval period. It’s part of human nature.
