Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

But as a Christian I reject the premise of the skeptic, and proclaim with Paul:

Another example of the diversity among RCs it seems. Follow above post.

is not a sign of integrity. It smacks of dishonesty.

"I call on Captain Teague, keeper of the code."

"The words "prevarication" "dishonesty" "slander" "deceit" "calumny" and "subterfuge" are synonymous with "lie" because they entail intent."

I vote that a couple of RCs are pulling a prank on all who have tried to give serious, reasonable, and honest responses.

Re-reading the Alinsky-like retorts a very few posters have given over the course of time, I think the real deal of what’s happening here is a private bet made on how long they can give silly, non-responsive replies in order to keep this thread going to post number...

What’s the bet?

Why else would sincere RCs continue exhibiting a visible lack of scholarship AND a lack of sincerity in their replies to other FReepers.

Suppertime in the South.

If you have not personally attended a mass you would not know what it is actually like.

I don't have to catch Ebola to know I don't like it, now do I? Many will say that is over the top, but if the Roman Catholic Church is really what we believe, spiritually I am spot on.

I have found that to be similar in nature to the assumptions of some Christians who have no personal experience with Jewish assemblies.

But in my case at least, I have attended Roman Catholic houses of worship during a variety of observances on several occasions. Found there to be a very hocus-pocus atmosphere.

Is it a sin for you to attend either Catholic or Jewish assemblies ?

Attend? Probably not. Participate? Probably. But the Roman Catholic Church forbids my full participation anyway, so not sure where you are going with that.

Your desperate attempt to include the Jews with the Catholics is not going to work.

Right at this moment, what I feel is not desperation, but rather gratitude. I am grateful for the rapproachment between Catholics and Jews in my generation.

What is(are) your alternative denomination(s) for one holy catholic apostolic church, if you exclude the Catholic Church ?

And if it is not what you believe ? Look again at John 17 and 2 Corinthians 5 and ponder what it means of what you assume about the Catholic Church was wrong.

  1. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

  2. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

Apparently Catholicism considers the Episcopalian church an alternative to itself as it accepts their priests. However, no true believer is going to accept Catholic-lite. A local assembly does not have to meet some Catholic's opinion of what a *true* church is to be a good place to assemble for fellowship and worship.

Thank you. It seems to me you have taken the step to name a denomination that is unacceptable in your opinion as a candidate for an alternative. We are making progress, Two down, thousands to go. :-)

If I understand you correctly, and please correct me if I’m wrong, you are saying The Bible (aka The Word of God) is equal to a textbook and requires a mortal human to make it understandable.

the bible is of course the word of God...written by inspired humans. It, like a trignometry book, is better understood if you have both the book and a person learned in the subject.....I take nothing away from the truth of the bible and choose to follow the teachers who WROtE IT.

Is that a rule in your denomination or are you making a request/suggestion and forgot to use the courtesy of "please?" :-)

I did? Where did I say that if Jesus was sinless He couldn't die? Provide the link, please.

in your post you stated that if Mary was sinless, she couldn't die. I merely stated that unless one was sinless, they couldn't die either, then pointed out that JESUS DIED.

What is(are) your alternative denomination(s) for one holy catholic apostolic church, if you exclude the Catholic Church ?

I know the answer to that!

Christian!!!!!!!!

There is no such thing as "one holy apostolic church" (another ASSUMPTION and false claim by RC's) seen in Scripture! BUT, the entire Body of Christ (corporate membership of believers, as defined by Scripture) is THE church (ecclesia)...

What is a Church According to the Bible?

What is a church? What does a church means? Does it mean a beautiful building? Isn’t it a majestic temple? Or it is an assembly of people? Let us simply, directly and deeply answers those questions.

According to the Gospel, a Church is the body of Christ. ...

1 Corinthians 12:12-13 (NKJV)
For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:27 (NKJV)
Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. ...

The Church of God is not a beautiful and majestic temple or house built by human hands. It is not even just an assembly of people gathered together in one place. It is not just a physical assembly of people. It is a spiritual assembly. Remember that church is the body of Christ, and the head of that body is Christ. The true church of God is a complete body composed of people who are united in the Spirit of God and Christ which is the head of that body. Now you may ask the elders of your church with this question – who is the head of our church? If they will answer a different one – be alarmed. If they will answer that it is Christ who is the head of our church, make this one a follow-up question – are we following all the teachings of Christ, which are written in the Bible? ...

It just means they've been wrong for a LONG time. Because it's whether they are close to Scripture that determines whether they are correct or not, not how long they've taught or believed something.

amazing, you read and study a book handed to you by the Catholic church 2,000 years after they wrote it and insist that you can interpret it better than could the learned people who studied and kept it alive for 20 centuries. You are an amazing person, even I couldn't do that.

... your denomination

When you have no argument, try to make one. Christians may belong to different groups, which define themselves with Denominational headings, but all are part of the body of Christ. All are part of His Body, the church (ecclesia).

fixation: Fixation refers to a persistent focus... ...A fixation occurs when an issue or conflict ... remains unresolved, leaving the individual focused on this stage and unable to move onto the next.

n.
1. The act or process of fixing or fixating.
2. An obsessive preoccupation.
3. Psychology A strong attachment to a person or thing, especially such an attachment formed in childhood or infancy and manifested in immature or neurotic behavior that persists throughout life...

No follower of Christ can ever be one with those who have incorporated paganism as the Catholic Church has.

And it was pointed out to you that Jesus took upon Himself the sins of man. Whose sins did Mary take upon herself if she was sinless but still died?

if you'd never attend one, how do you feel competant to describe it???
