Interesting that commenters went on about the penmanship of Jefferson Davis, without mention of the more legible (IMHO) writing of Lincoln.

My daughter worked in an American National Archive deep underground in Minneapolis for a year, as a grad student. I think she said it was one of several that exist in America. It was at least 100’ below the street in elevators. It is humidity and temperature controlled. She got to first hand examine documents from the days of Columbus, Colonial times, and up to WWII. It was something very few people get the honor of doing. She had to wear special clothing too. You can’t bring molds, mildew, bacteria in on your person. She wore one of those John Kerry blue bunny space tyvek suits.

Probably both of those letters were written by clerks and simply signed by Lincoln and Davis — that was a common practice. Lincoln’s letter is also countersigned by Seward, so it appears that would be official correspondence, actually written out by a clerk or secretary.

Went to New Haven, CT and since it is the home of Yale, there is a rare book museum located there.
