Good points! This poor theology dates all the way back to 431AD, the Council of Ephesus. The effects of the Catholic Church's decision to deify Mary by calling her Theotokos - "Birth-Giver of God" are still being felt. Ironically, prior to Christianity, Ephesus was the place deified the goddess Diana...

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. ... John 19: 26-27

Like Rome’s Mary, Diana was also known as the “Queen of Heaven.”

"The Christian who does not feel that the Virgin Mary is his or her mother is an orphan," Pope Francis tweeted.
"People exploit me for my connections, worshipping me as a way to get closer to Jesus," said the Holy Virgin, bathed in a golden light and attended by seraphim. "How would Anthony feel if I called upon him in the guise of friendship, but simply wanted his cousin to do some plumbing work for me? It's just rude."

Then we’re all orphans - except John.

Craziness.

It’s a steady drip.

Those folks ought to learn to READ - not just LISTEN.

“The Christian who does not feel that the Virgin Mary is his or her mother is an orphan,” Pope Francis tweeted.

Other than the fact that this belief is without biblical support, it is inspirational. Still, nice whole cloth stuff from the Pope.

You need a new screen name, since the real Jan Sobieski would tell you in no uncertain terms what he thought of your theological errors.

Uh, let me say it... Mary is not my mother.

Was this another mis-translated comment again?

I like the biblical Mary.

I don’t like the RCC telling me what I should or shouldn’t believe about her based on their theology and worship of Mary. I am so sick of the weird relationship of RCC that regard Jesus as the stern judge (judgment half) and Mary as the one they can beg for stuff from (the love/mercy half). It’s screwed up. God is both perfect judge but perfectly loving. At the same time. He didn’t split His love side to Mary and the stern immovable judge to Jesus. Mary doesn’t need to beg the judge for us because only she can get the judge to grant what she asks because He just can’t refuse his mother. It’s warped. Warped.

The bottom line is Mary is not responsible for my salvation. I don’t look to Mary for anything as it concerns my salvation. SHe’s a great Christian and had the pivotal role in God’s plan of salvation, but at the end of the day Mary doesn’t save anyone, she needed to be saved by her Son, Jesus Christ. And she knew it. And I follow her advice to look to Jesus and do what He tells you.

Not my birth mother nor mother of any kind...but that hardly makes me an orphan in Christ.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again" said the Apostle Peter.

Why are Catholics going against the Apostle Peter?

According to this God has caused us to be born again. How? He removed our heart of stone and gave us a heart of flesh and regenerated our minds. No woman's womb can do that.

Too bad..... guess I must be an orphan since I accept that Jesus of Nazareth is fully God and fully human while on earth and a part of the trinity before and after his earthly visit.....I have no such belief about Mary

Poor, sorrowful Mary. She gets dealt such disrespect on Free Republic. But I don't worry too much; Jesus has her back. :)

I'm no orphan.

I've got Mary.

Calling Mary “Theotokos” does not deify Mary at all.
You are not accurately describing what it means.

In fact if you understood what it means, I bet that YOU even believe she is the Theotokos. For trinitarian Christians it is an uncontroversial fact.

What does Theotokos mean? Theotokos means GOD-BEARER.
It simply means that Mary had Jesus in her womb, and gave birth to Jesus — and that Jesus was God. It DOES NOT mean that God originated from Mary — God was uncreated and existed for all time.

So when you say Theotokos is deifying Mary, that is completely false.

Do you believe Jesus is God? Do you believe Mary had Jesus in her womb and gave birth to her? Do you believe God existed at all times? Then you believe the same.

John 14:18 “I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you.”
Galatians 4:4-7
“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:14-17 “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God”
(and this is found in the Douay (catholic) Bible
