The Duggars are part of a very specific subculture of the Christian homeschooling world, one dominated by leaders like Doug Phillips of Vision Forum and Bill Gothard of ATI, whose incredibly restrictive teachings and controlling practices have earned them the adjective “cult-like.” These organizations and leaders teach that children must be trained to obey their parents completely, without question, and with a smile; that women are not to have careers and that daughters should be actively discouraged from considering such; that adult daughters must continue to obey their fathers and must marry through parent-controlled courtships; that college attendance is problematic for children of either gender but especially for girls; and that marrying and having large numbers of children is the only godly path available.

We are to love one another, and this thread does not seem loving to the Duggard family.
There are many differing families, with varying backgrounds or foreign countries teaching's as the education for their thought system.
Get over judging differences. Thank God it is not up to us to be judge and jury.

The ATI movement needs to be marginalized. I have nothing against the Duggers who I am sure are well meaning as are most of the ATI families.

This is true and your point that the public school system is a dangerous cult is well taken as well.
However, the fact that the Duggars live their lives in front of a camera is troubling; nothing those children do is real life when they are on camera, and they know it. Thus, the whole situation is suspect because of the veneer of reality TV.

When I got a Vision Forum catalog in the mail, I was angry. Jane Austen is held up as an example to girls — sure, she was a witty British writer, but she is not a Christian writer and did not write to further the Kingdom.
And I can’t even begin to tell you how grossed-out I am by Bill Gothard.
As a homeschooling mother, I am SO thankful that I had the opportunity both to attend college and to work after college. It is just simply inhumane to deny a young woman a chance to do these things. We are fully human and equal with men in God’s kingdom. I completely accept that we have different roles in the church and at home, but my education and career opportunities means that I can be a better parent to my children who are both male and female. If I’m to teach children at church — ditto.
Does a man really want a woman without a strong education herself educating his sons at home?

They are wealthy in their own right. Their house is totally paid for. They go on mission trips to help others and to teach their kids how really blessed they are. More people should be like them.

I was blessed that I lived on one farm until middle of the 6th grade and we moved to a farm my brother bought for when he got out of the USAF. It had 2 houses on it. It was at the end of a road so when we saw a car, we knew it was family/friends. I remember one summer my dad’s brother wanted to grow some cotton. I still do not understand why but we ended up taking care of it and picking the cotton. That was one time too many. Cotton does not weigh a lot so it took us forever to pick a bale. Am glad we did it but do not want to do it again! Precious memories along my life’s trail. The Duggars will have precious memories, too.
I did not get in on picking cotton, two of my brothers and a sister went to Arizona and tried it but barely made enough money to eat.
They said the people who grew up doing it could actually make pretty good money doing it.
My dad farmed broom corn in eastern Colorado and beans in western Colorado.
The broom corn was cut with pocket knives then bundled up and put on a wagon or truck and hauled to town to be baled.
The grown ups cut and the kids bundled, at eight years old I thought I was old enough to cut and it seemed so easy, dad let mew try it for about a half of a day and I was glad to go back to bundling.
It is strange how a few precious memories off set all of those not so precious and I think God for that.
Let me tell you a little story. When I was growing up, we would chop what we thought were weeds. We called them maypops. Imagine my surprise when my daughter told me they were passion fruit. Had never seen any fruit. About 2 months ago, I went outside to talk to a friend. She was looking at a huge vine at the side of the house. I got to looking at it and saw it was passion fruit! My daughter and her 2 kids ate them in Seattle. They can have them! The blooms are beautiful. It is about 20’ long and was not here when my irises and peonies were blooming. No one knows how it got there. The vine is pretty, too. I have showed it to neighbors who had never heard of/seen one. We learn something every day.
