To: Salvation

No, it’s not something Catholic that palm-raising. It’s a evangelical thing that I’ve witnessed at suburban masses. No holy water was sprinkled.

That started in my area with the Charismatic Renewal services back in the 70s. I never do it. One priest who is now retired wouldn’t allow it at his Masses.

I have seen it all too often and it should be stopped. I also hate and hated the hand holding Our Father. I also don't like the Sign of Peace as I do not necessarily want to touch some strangers hand who God knows where they put it since the last time they washed it.

Palms are lifted so that the priest can circulate through the Church sprinkling them with Holy Water and thus, blessing them.

People assume the "orans" position that the priest uses during the Lord's Prayer. The Roman Missal indicates this posture for the priest in the rubrics but in some parishes the congregation assumes it also. Then hands are raised even higher when the prayer is completed.

It's a hold over from part of the charismatic movement. There is nothing in the rubrics that says anyone other than the priest is to assume "orans".
