Vatican City, Jul 31, 2014 / 05:01 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The Congregation for Divine Worship, in a recent circular letter, announced that the placement of the sign of peace within Mass will not change, though it suggested several ways the rite could be performed with greater dignity.
“The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments … pronounced in favor of maintaining the 'rite' and 'sign' of peace in the place it has now in the Ordinary of the Mass,” Fr. Jose Maria Gil Tamayo, secretary general of the Spanish bishops' conference, related in a July 28 memo.
He noted that this was done out of consideration of the placement of the rite of peace as “a characteristic of the Roman rite,” and “not believing it to be suitable for the faithful to introduce structural changes in the Eucharistic Celebration, at this time.”
The sign of peace is made after the consecration and just prior to the reception of Communion; it had been suggested that it be moved so that it would precede the presentation of the gifts.
Fr. Gil's memo was sent to the Spanish bishops, and prefaced the Congregation for Divine Worship's circular letter, which was signed June 8 by Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera, its prefect, and its secretary, Archbishop Arthur Roche. The circular had been approved and confirmed the previous day by Pope Francis.
The letter made four concrete suggestions about how the dignity of the sign of peace could be maintained against abuses.
Fr. Gil explained that the circular letter is a fruit of the 2005 synod of bishops on the Eucharist, in which the possibility of moving the rite was discussed.

My surmise is that the Philipinos brought that over. And I’ve definitely seen it in the big apple. In fact that was were I first saw it.
More protestantism. Which is fine, insofar as it goes, but I’m not crazy about it at Mass.
It’s all part of that PC attitude that the Church assumed after Vatican II.
Our parish even mentioned something about the end of Ramadan in their weekly bulletin.
I regret not being able to attend a traditional Roman Mass. Last time I did, I was a graduate student serving at Mass in 1965.
I would probably have an emotional breakdown if I heard the words, “Introibo at Altare Dei”.
I’ve seen it at Methodist services. But it’s completely unacceptable at a Catholic mass. Yuck - and I want no Protestantism anywhere near the mass or the Church.

In our Archdiocese, we kneel in our pews after receiving the Eucharist.
I read these type of post with incredulity, as the only clear description of the Lord's supper, the "feast of charity," (Jude 1:12) after the gospels is 1Cor. 11:20-34 , and in which the Lord's death is proclaimed, shown, declared, (v. 26) by how they showed their unity with Christ and thus for each other whom He died for (Act 20:28) in taking part in this communal meal.
Thus when they therefore came "together into one place" to eat the Lord's supper, they really were not, "this is not to eat the Lord's supper. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken...and shame them that have not," "not discerning the Lord's body." (1 Corinthians 11:20,21,29)
For they were treating others are if they were not bought by the sinless shed blood of Christ, by going ahead to eat independently of others as it were a restaurant, and even apparently filling their face (drunken) while others were hungry.
Thus the solution to prevent their condemnation for acting contrary to the sacrificial love Christ showed in His death, and which they were supposed to be showing:
"Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come." (1 Corinthians 11:33-34)
And this focus upon the church as the body of Christ and members in particular continues into the next chapter. This is quite different from the "Jesus and men" idea and in which the elements consumed are the whole focus.
Even the Catholic NAB notes states concerning v. 28:
The self-testing required for proper eating involves discerning the body (1 Cor 11:29), which, from the context, must mean understanding the sense of Jesus’ death (1 Cor 11:26), perceiving the imperative to unity that follows from the fact that Jesus gives himself to all and requires us to repeat his sacrifice in the same spirit (1 Cor 11:18–25). - http://usccb.org/bible/1corinthians/11
This does mean saying "peace be with you" and or handshakes are to be part of liturgy, which tend toward being perfunctory, but such should precede worship and be spontaneous, and believers are commanded, "Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you." (Romans 16:16) And the apostles gave each other "the right hands of fellowship." Gal. 2:9)
Yet the theology of the Eucharist itself is a perversion of Scripture.
That started in my area with the Charismatic Renewal services back in the 70s. I never do it. One priest who is now retired wouldn’t allow it at his Masses.
It's leaking out of the Mega-Churches, along with "Praise Music", which is an abomination.
There are two churches in my area that installed Communion rails, and the priests distribute Communion the old way, with us kneeling at the Communion rail and the priest going from person to person distributing the host.
Then just do it it.That’s what I do.
Going to Mass is between you and God.If we read the Saints they kinda did what they wanted in certain parts of the Mass.If you feel pressured to give the sign of the peace give a wave to the people in front of you and in back of you and then kneel down.
I used to attend Mass every Sunday in Havana. When it came time to offer each other the Sign of Peace, the men would offer the revolutionary salut, with the fist held high in the air.

Mass is supposed to be between you and Jesus and no one else. It’s not a social function.
Exactly. Holding hands is more protestant nonsense that has crept into the Mass. A good bishop would put a stop to it.
Must be a lot of cooties in the Catholic churches...
