Are Racist LDS Scriptures Still Deemed “Utterly Reliable” and “Pure Truth”? Part 1
Mormon Coffee (Mormonism Research Ministry) ^ | Jan. 6, 2014 | Lynn K. Wilder

In the recently released statement on lds.org on Race and the Priesthood, the modern Mormon Church disavows “that blacks or people of any other race or ethnicity are inferior in any way to anyone else…” This unequivocal truth, that no race or ethnicity is superior to another, is something that Spain (1542), Quakers (1600s), Pennsylvania (1790), England (1807), Abraham Lincoln (1865), and Christians of any era who believe the Bible, know. According to the Bible, God shows no favoritism—never by skin color—and commands his people to do the same.

Lincoln, who often quoted the biblical God, was displeased with the Utah Territory for its stance as a slave territory (and for its polygamy). Finally in 1978, 113 years after Lincoln and 24 years after Brown vs. Board of Education, the Mormon Church gave black members of African ancestry (why not restrict Native Americans—they were the unrighteous dark-skinned Lamanites of the Book of Mormon?) equal access to the priesthood, ergo its Celestial kingdom, eternal life, and the potential for godhood.

As a professor at Brigham Young University (1999-2008), I taught, among other things—multiculturalism. In class, some of my generational LDS students proposed that those with black skin were blighted with something they called “the curse of Cain.” Alarmed by this belief, I began to investigate LDS scriptures on the topic and discovered scriptural support in the Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price corroborating students’ beliefs.

Because these scriptures still exist, are read, and revered, the lingering conundrum for the Mormon Church is this: How to explain the 20-some passages of LDS scripture that can be considered racist. So, this new attempt to state a non-biased position on race, which falls short of an apology, ignores the challenge of present-day scriptures.

As well intended as the latest words on the official church website are, they can affect no real change in policy or teachings because these scriptures remain. Why call these scriptures racist? The definition of racist is the belief that some races of people are better than others because of their race, their skin color. This is precisely what the LDS scriptures STILL teach. Here are few examples just from the Book of Mormon:

Alma 3:6 “And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren…”

3 Nephi 2:15 “And their curse was taken from them, and their skin becamewhite like unto the Nephites;”

3 Nephi 19:30 “And when Jesus had spoken these words he came again unto his disciples; and behold they did pray steadfastly, without ceasing, unto him; and he did smile upon them again; and behold they werewhite, even as Jesus.”

As these passages explain, the Lamanites (forerunners of the dark-skinned Native Americans descended from the Jews according to the Book of Mormon) were given a mark of dark skin as a curse for their transgression, not toward God, by the way, but toward their brethren, the “righteous” Nephites. Later when some Lamanites became righteous, the curse was removed and their skin became white.

This repulsion for the LDS racist scriptures I had discovered began to soften my heart toward the biblical God who, according to the Bible, is no respecter of persons and who shows no favoritism. When I read the Bible, its teachings were unmistakably clear because they were repeated over and over. One of these undeniable themes is that God is no respecter of persons and shows no favoritism, no bias.

What to do with the racist scriptures? If the LDS Church moves to remove them, then that calls into question all other things Joseph Smith wrote as scripture and said came from God. Can the Mormon Church say they’re an allegory that means something other than what they say literally? As of today, the church is still defending the four standard works on their official website as “utterly reliable” and “pure truth.”

I thought it was obvious that Prepper is a retread.

IMO, it's dishonest to have more than one FR handle, and possibly against forum rules.

All of a sudden, the questions I had, and even still have, about the gospel were turned on their heads. The deep doctrinal issues that had brought me great trouble about the church now brought me great peace. As I searched far and wide for evidence, trying to find the total case for or against the truthfulness of the Church of Jesus Christ, I found the truth to be beautifully simple and before my eyes: our Heavenly Father loves us, and through our Savior Jesus Christ, he has provided a way for us to return to Him.

I don’t know the gospel is true because my mind could finally make sense of it. I know the gospel is true because of the personal and powerful witness that filled my heart.

I know the gospel of Jesus Christ has the power to soften the hardest of hearts, turn anger into love, provide peace in turbulent times and bless those who weren’t looking to be blessed. I don’t know those truths because someone told me about them, I know them because they happened to me.

And if all that isn’t true, nothing is.

The truth is that all of the above is in the bible.  Too bad you managed to miss it.

THE MORMONS. (From the “Watchman.”)

“By long and continual counterfeiting, and by oft telling a lie, he was turned by habit almost into the thing he seemed to be and from a liar to a believer.”

The above sontence of Lord Verulam’a may stand as the motto and moral of the following history -

Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet, and founder of that sect, whs born in the transatlantic state of Vermont in the year 1805, and was by occupation a farmer. His education is said to have been extremely limited, to have consisted merely in the knowledge of reading, in being able to write very imperfectly, and in some acquaintance with the elementary rules of arithmetic. When about fifteen years of age, he meditated the establishment of a new religion, and in 1830 began to carry his design into effect. In the following year he became the head of a sect comprising thirty individuals, among whom were his father and three brothers.

At the present time the Mormonite sect, according to its own account, numbers 300,000 persons, having its emissaries
and adherents in most parts of Europe, and even in China and India but fixing its central seat in Upper California, where tbe believers m the new prophet, after seveinl migrations, each leading them further west towards the shores of the Pacific, now possess on extensive and fertile territory beyond the Rocky Mountains, in the Great Salt Lake Valley, which they have colonized in such numbers that they have already aspired to be admitted as a free State into the confederation of North American Republics.

The Mormon prophet is said to have been favoured with remarkable visions, and to have been informed by an angel of the Lord that he was chosen to be an instrument to accomplish some of God’s marvelous purposes in the latter times. It was further said to have been revealed to him that the American Indians are a remnant of Israel, who, when they emigrated to America possessed the knowledge of the true God and enjoyed his favour; and that their own ancient prophets and inspired writers wrote a history of important events which occurred among them. Tho greater part of this people were said to have been destroyed in the fourth or fifth century of our era, a thousand years before Columbus disclosed the New World to the cognizance of Cluisterulom but the records of tho Hebrew-Indian race were preserved, and deposited in tho earth about the year 420.

Smith was, moreover, informed by the angel that those records contained various revelations pertaining to the Gospel of the kingdom, and also many prophecies relating to the great events of the last days; that, in order to the fulfilment of God’s promises to (he ancients who wrote those recouls, and to the accomplishment of his purposes in the restitution of their children, they were to be brought forth to the knowledge of the people; and that, if faithful, Smith himself should be the highly favoured instrument in bringing those writings before tbe world. He was at length informed as to the actual spot where they were deposited, and instructed to go and view them. Accordingly, in September, 1827, the angel is declared to have delivered them into his hands.

These records, we are assured, had been engraved on plates which had the appearance of gold, and were filled on both sides with Egyptian characters. They were bound together into a volume, which of course exhibited many marks of antiquity, and likewise great skill in the art of engraving. With the records were found also the Urim and Thummim, by means of which Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet, was enabled to translate them into English his translation is entitled the “Book of Mormon.” The plates, however, he kept within his own curtain; he never produced them in evidence of the authenticity of his pretended translation. Only a few of his intimate associates professed to have been favoured with a sight of them.

The true origin and history of those alleged ancient records, which the impostor Smiih ushered into the world as a divine revelation, are briefly as follows: In the year 1812, a gentleman of tbe name of Solomon Spauldiny, a graduate of Dartmouth College, residing in New Salem, Ohio, wrote a religioua novel, founded on the idea that the North American Indians were the descendants of the ten lost tribes of Israel, which be entitled “The Manuscript Found.” In this work, “Mormon” and his son Moroni were the two principal chaiacters. Ihe very name of Mormon (Mormo, with an alteration of the gender) seems to intimate that the whole was a phantom, or bugbear, conjured up by an erratic imagination. The manuscript was put into the hands of a bookseller named Patterson, at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, with a view to its publication. Before an arrangement could be made for that purpose the author died, and the manuscript remained in the possession of Patterson. Sidney Rigdon, who subsequently figured, next to Joseph Smith, as the principal leader of the Mormons, was at that time connected with Pattersons printing office, became there acquainted with Spaulding’s manuscript, and copied it. Whether the idea of fabricating their pretended new revelation out of Spaulding’s romance originated with Smith or with Rigdon is uncertain the wife, several friends, and the brother of Spaulding, however, proved the identity of the principal portions of the Book of Mormon with the novel of the The Manuscript Found.” There seems, therefore, no ground for doubt that Smith and his associate Rigdon acted in concert in its concoction from the materials which Spaulding’s work afforded them.

Besides the “Book of Mormon” Smith originated and partly composed a book of Doctrines and Covenants, purporting to be, like the chapters of Mahomet’s Koran, direct revelations from Heaven, and relating to the temporal government of the true believers, the support of the poor, the tithing of the members, the establishment of cities and temples, the allotment of lands, the emigration of the saints, the education of the people, the gathering of moneys, and various other matters.

The Mormons, as regards their views of church order, supernatural gifts, and the prophecies of Scripture relating to the second coming of Christ and the Millenium, appear to have drawn largely from the late Edward Irving and other recent prophetical expositors, many of whose interpolations of particular portions of Scripture they have amalgamated with their own ridiculous and absurd notions. While the followers of Mr. Irving, in Newman-street, were uttering pretended revelations in what they dignified with the appellation of “unknown tongues,” the Mormons in America were practising themselves in the same gibberish. They recognise two orders of priesthood, the Aaronic and the Melchizedek and are governed by a president and prophet, twelve apostles, the “seventies,” high priests, bishops, and elders. They maintain that the gifts of prophecy, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues, discerning of spirits, healing, miracles, and casting out of devils, have not ceased and assert that Joaeph Smith and many other Mormons have wrought miracles and cast out devils. They affirm that the end of the world is at hand, and that themselves are the “saints” spoken of in the Apocalypse, who shall reign with Christ in his kingdom on the earth and that the seat of this kingdom will be either Missouri, or their present territory in the Great Salt Valley of Deseret.

They allege that tbe Book of Mormon and the Book of Doctrines and Covenants take nothing from the Old or New Testament, but constitute the completion of both. Tbey nevertheless believe matter to be eternal; and maintain that God is a material being. In their authorised documents tho anti-scriptural and absurd notion of the sect on the latter subject is thus stated: -” We believe that God is a being who hath both body and parts, and also passions.” In another of their publications, the following passage occurs, sanctioned by the signature of their prophets “What is God He ia a material organised intelligence, poss, jsing both body and parts. He is in the form of a man, and is, in fact, of the same species, and is a model or standard of perfection, to which man is destined to attain, he being the Great Father and Head of the whole family. This being cannot occupy two distinct places at once, therefore he cannot be everywhere present.” Their notions on other subjects are of a like gross and revolting character, which we forbear to mention- ex uno disce omnes. They have been charged with holding a secret mystical doctrine permitting gross licentiousness; but this is contrary to their acknowledged standards.

The Mormons have sent their missionaries to almost every country ia the world. On the continent of Europe they have made but few converts. In Great Britain, however, the members of their community, at the present time, amount to upwards of 30,000. During the last fourteen years, more than 50,000 have been baptised in England, of whom nearly 17,000 have emigrated to America. Only last week we saw an account of the departure of a party of Sussex proselytes. The Mormons have appropriated 94,000 ounces of gold to the work of gathering the saints from all countries and bringing them to the Great Salt Lake Valley. They dwell there in the country of the Utah Indians, with whom they are the better able to maintain friendly relations, as their peculiar theory of the identity of the native races of America with the lost tribes of Israel, happily lends them to regard their dark brethren with a respect and tenderness which appear to have been reciprocated. The Mormons here possess one of the most beautiful and fertile territories of the Union. The neighbouring golden sands of California have allured away but few, who were besought never to return. The followers of the Prophet of the West devote themselves to reaping tbe bountiful harvests of what they call their Promised Land, some of whose geographical features at once reminded them of Palestine; its Sea of tbe Plain being paralleled in the Great Salt Lake, which also receives, from an upper duplicate of Lake Tiberias, the streams of a “Western Jordan.” The central settlement has already sent out colonies over a line of some hundreds of miles from north to south, The American people who Lynched Joseph Smith still regard his followers with aversion and the Congress last year manifested something of jealousy by annexing the Mormon territory, and even imposing upon it the name of Utah instead of that of Deseret which its colonists had chosen. By the same Bill the President was empowered to nominate Brigham Young as Governor of therterritory. This successor of the Prophet both rules and preaches, and is therefore the Abu Beker of the Mormon Caliphate.

Such is a compendious history of the most widely spread religious delusion of modern time. For an account of its minuter details, and the tragic end of its originator, we refer to a little compilation which has lately appealed, the work apparently of several hands* It is the most complete history of the Mormons that has yet been writen, and contains much cumous information regarding this remarkable sect, The authors, however, have given expression to some sentiments which we deem very objectionable. At page 292, the following passage occurs:—”The Chillingworth doctrine of ‘the Bible, and the Bible alone, being the religion of Protestants,’ had a tendency to substitute for the idolatry of the priest the idolatry of the book and, indeed, it was a favourite tenet, and, strange as it may appear, the boast of the orthodox, that there was no vision in the land.” The whole of the paragraph of which this forms a part, and also that immediately preceding, are calculated to produce false impressions on the mind of the reader regarding matters of the highest importance. Such sentiments as the one quoted are favourable, according to the education arid temperament of the persons indoctrinated by them, either to the superstitious Pope worship of Rome on the one hand, or the daring impostures of the “Book of Mormon” on the other.

MISCELLANEOUS EXTRACTS.

The Mormons.—The Report of the Judges of the Utah/territory, relative to the proceedings of the Mormons, is full of disgusting details of the debauchery •carried on by the leading members of that sect. It should be perused by the numerous persons who even at the present time are emigrating from Great :Britain to join them. The following is an extract from the report:—” We deem it our duty to state, in this official communication, that polygamy, or ‘plurality of wives is openly avowed- and practiced in the territory, under the sanction and. in obedience ‘to the direct commands of the church’ So universal is this practise that very few, if any of the leading men in the community can be found who have no more than one wife each, which creates a monopoly, and which was peculiarly hard upon the officers sent to reside there.

The prominent men in the church, whose example in all things it is the ambition of the more humble to imitate, have each many wives, some of them, we are creditably informed, and believe; as many as twenty or thirty, and Brigham Young, the governor, even a greater number. Only a few days before we left the territory, the Governor was seen riding through the streets of the city in an omnibus with a largo company of his wives, more than two thirds of whom had infants in their arms, a sure sign that the evil is _increasing. It is not uncommon to find two or more sisters married to the same man and in one instance at least a mother and her two daughters are among the wives of a leading member of the church. This practice, regarded and punished as high and revolting crime in all civilized countries, would of course, never be made a statutory offence by a Mormon Legislature; and if a crime at common law, the court would be powerless’ to correct the evil with Mormon juries. The city of Great Salt Lake is an important point in the overland route to Oregon and California for the emigrant to replenish his stores, or to winter if overtaken by the advance of the season but the intimidation which is produced by the denunciations and conduct of the Mormon church and people upon citizens of the United States passing through or engaged in business there, is such as to induce the emigrant to avoid it, if possible, and the resident to submit without a murmur. No man dares open his mouth in opposition to their lawless exactions, without feeling their effects upon his liberty, his business, or his life.

And thus upon the soil of the United States, and under the broad folds of its stars and stripes, which protect the citizen in his rights in every part of the civilized world, there is a spot where he dare not exercise the liberty of a freeman. We were told that many of the Gentiles(as all are called there who are not members of the Mormon church and have only one wife), have been sentenced for trivial offences to two, five, and ten years of labour upon the public highways, with ball and chain to their legs, with no shelter at night but caverns dug in the earth by their own hands. We have seen one of these highways cut out of the side of a mountain, and the caverns far down at the base; but the approach of the federal officers, we are told, was the signal for the release and banishment of these convicts from the territory into Texas.”

...in obedience ‘to the direct commands of the church’.

Those DIRECT COMMANDS are still in LDS scripture.

I wonder WHY the folks that obey the cabel high above SLC, fail to follow their GOD's DIRECT COMMANDS??

Isn't what happened to ANOTHER MORMON who FAILED to follow them a scary enough example??

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 132
51–57, Emma Smith is counseled (commanded) to be faithful and true; 58–66, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.

51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.
52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.
53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.
54 And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and acleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be bdestroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.
55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of beternal lives in the eternal worlds.
56 And again, verily I say, let mine handmaid aforgive my servant Joseph his trespasses; and then shall she be forgiven her trespasses, wherein she has trespassed against me; and I, the Lord thy God, will bless her, and multiply her, and make her heart to brejoice.

I seem to remember He had a Covenant with a certain people.

Yes; HE did.

I seem to remember that it didn't work out so swell.

I also remember something in the OT about another covenant HE was going to make.

POLLARD’S

“A MORMON MAID.”
THE PICTURE THE MORMONS TRIED TO STOP.

Tonight at the Opera House a startling picture lifting the veil of secrecy from Mormonism and exposing Mormon secret practices that have startled the world will be presented under the title of “A Mormon Maid. Mae Murray is featured as the girl who was forced into a Mormon celestial marriage

“THE LION OF THE LORD.”
This was the title applied to Brigham Young, the real guiding spirit of the Mormon successful settlement. He figures in “The Mormon Maid” as the crafty plot-maker whose threat to the unfortunate father decides the latter to marry another wife and conform to Mormon custom. “You or your daughter choose” is the warning made at the Council meeting, and so the father takes the terrible step. The film drama has caused more discussion than any screened for a very long time and in Australia its success was sensational. It is a wonderful production on which money was spent with a lavish hand, some of the, scenes being marvels of spectacular settings. Mae Murray is the heroine, and her work is beyond praise.

“THE DESTROYING ANGELS.”
These were a band of iron-willed fanatics who guarded the entrances and exits from the Mormon settlement in its early days. They wore fantastic costumes of white with a heavy veil, and showing the “all-seeing eye” of the Mormon ritual. From these robes were drawn the costumes of the Ku Klux Klan. Every road and every pass was guarded by members of the “Destroying Angels” and no one could go in or out of the Utah settlement without their knowledge. These are utilised in one of the most dramatic incidents in “The Mormon Maid” the powerful picture drama which is to be shown.
(Grey River Argus, 24 April 1918, Page 4) (NZ newspaper)

HAYWARD’S PICTURES.
“MORMONISM”

Utah City, has been much exorcised by the success of the film drama entitled “The Mormon Maid,” to be shown at Hayward’s tonight. The film attacks with relentless severity the practices of the Mormon creed when it was at the, height of its power. In Australia, when the film landed, cables were received from the Mormon authorities endeavouring to block the showing of the film, and communications of protest were sent to Australian leaders. It will be remembered also that similar attempts were made in New Zealand.

The story is particularly sensational, splendidly produced and superbly acted. Dora (Mae Murray) the daughter of the Hogucs (Hobart Bosworth and Edythe Chapman), who live in the Mormon metropolis, loves Tom Ridgon (Frank Borzage), a young follower of the faith, who is unacquainted with its darker side. Darius Burr (Noah Beery), a leading figure in-the church, looks with covetous eyes on Dora, and to gain his point forces Hogue to accept the faith by marrying him a second time. This so affects Nancy Hogue that she takes her life. As a consequence Hogue, Tom and Dora attempt to escape, but are prevented by the Destroying Angels, who forever guard the outskirts of the city. Hogue is believed to have been killed, and the young couple are taken captive. Darius then attempts to force Dora to marry him, and she, seeking the only avenue of escape, declares in public that she is not a virgin. Enraged, Darius has the girl taken prisoner and brought to him at a certain place. Rogue, who has not fled, appears in the garb of a Destroying Angel,, and, with the help of Tom, rescues Dora and kills Darius. They are then able to escape from the grip of the Mormons.

Here ya go...

Deuteronomy 30

1 “And when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you, 2 and return to the Lord your God, you and your children, and obey his voice in all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your soul, 3 then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have mercy on you, and he will gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you. 4 If your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there he will take you. 5 And the Lord your God will bring you into the land that your fathers possessed, that you may possess it. And he will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers. 6 And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. 7 And the Lord your God will put all these curses on your foes and enemies who persecuted you. 8 And you shall again obey the voice of the Lord and keep all his commandments that I command you today. 9 The Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground. For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers, 10 when you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that are written in this Book of the Law, when you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

11 “For this commandment that I command you today tis not too hard for you, neither is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 14 But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.

15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. 16 If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules,2 then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, 20 loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

“A Mormon Maid,” 1917/18 was a VERY popular movie in Aussie and NZ thanks to the Mormons and their indignant screaming and free publicity..
