KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
International fraternal benefit organization of Catholic men, founded in 1882 by Rev. Michael J. McGivney, of New Haven, Connecticut. It was established on the principles of charity, unity, and patriotism, and its purpose is to provide a system of fraternal insurance benefits to the members, promote cultural relations, and engage in a variety of religious, educational, and social activities. The Knights represent the modern expression of Catholic Action. Their "purpose has meaning only insofar as they are in perfect accord with the mind of the Church." Worldwide membership is over one million.

Catholic Word of the Day Ping!
If you aren’t on this Catholic Word of the Day Ping list and would like to be, please send me a FReepmail.
Couple of things. Among charity, unity, and patriotism, missed was “fraternity.” Also, the Knights are just short of two million members in more than 14,000 councils worldwide. I realize the dictionary might be a few years old ;).
Council 13966 earned McGivey, Columbus and Double Star awards for the Fraternal year. Next Thursday we will deliver 400 meals to Seniors and 150 to Families in Transitional Motels. I love it!
Moderately so. In a rebuild mode.
Council 11293, Assembly 3004. Very active with almost 500 members in my council. In 2008, we were one of 5 worldwide that made Century Council (100 new members in a fraternal year). We brought in 116 that year.
Vivat Jesus indeed!
Thanks for the updates. When considering when Fr. Hardon did this dictionary??I really don’t have a copyright date on it — all the figures quoted seem reasonable.
Your growth numbers show that indeed, the Catholic Church is growing everywhere!
I’m rebuilding the Catholic Ping List after a computer crash. Shall I put you on it?
That should be Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. The pgk in my name stands for Past Grand Knight...
I am on your list already, thanks.
Wonderful news.

Yes, please do - thanks!
The best way to find your local Council would be to check around at your Church. YMMV.
