Chicago’s Archbishop Francis Cardinal George refused communion to gay activist Joe Murray, who wore a rainbow sash during George’s appearance at the 25th anniversary of the Archdiocesan Gay and Lesbian Outreach Sunday, June 16.
About 25 LGBTs and allies protested outside of AGLO’s Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 708 W. Belmont. They could be heard shouting outside during Mass, and cars honking in support were also a frequent sound heard during the service.
The protest was organized by the Rainbow Sash Movement and the Gay Liberation Network. Murray is the founder and executive director of the U.S. Rainbow Sash Movement. While several others took rainbow sashes from Murray ahead of Mass, no one else protested inside.
Murray stood up with his back to Cardinal George during parts of the Mass, and then he went up with the estimated 200 others in attendance to receive communion. George refused him, and Murray walked away with his hands open and empty, showing the congregants that he had been denied.
But in an emotional show of solidarity, Brenna Cronin, who had already received her communion as part of the church choir, went back up and took another communion wafer (called a Host) and brought it to Murray herself.
“One of my brothers, a member of my community, who is a full and equal member of the body of Christ, was denied communion. So I got back in line and I brought him communion, as I would for anyone else,” Cronin told Windy City Times after the Mass. Cronin, who is a lesbian, has been involved with AGLO for two years and is also a cantor.

Two things about this: good for Cardinal George.
The other thing is the lesbian who went back to get another Host...her actions demonstrate EXACTLY why parishes need to station ushers at the communion line to make sure nobody can leave without consuming the Host. Or better yet, do away with communion in the hand.
Why would a pervert want Communion?

If it was a Gay and Lesbian outreach then how did any of the attendees get communion?
I would wager that Cardinal George was under the delusion that some of them were trying to live chastely.

Since this is the Body of Christ, this is horrible. The deviant who smuggled one out should be exposed and denied in the future. There are plenty of “christian churches” where these deviants would feel welcome (and could probably score dates).
Cronin should be kicked out. Another CINO roams the plain. This Guy is an attention whore.
I agree: there should be no such thing as a “gay and lesbian outreach mass.” I’m sure Cdl. George inherited it from the queenly Bernardin, since the article said the event had been going for 25 years. He clearly didn’t want to take the flak for stopping it, but he should do so now.
There are organizations in the Church for people “struggling with same sex attraction,” but clearly the majority of people who go to these special masses aren’t struggling at all.
I don’t understand this whole thing.
A gay outreach Mass-—WTF??????

This crazy muff-diver goes through twice and brings a host to him??
How many rules did this group break.
I take Communion very seriously. I only go a few times a year because I always do penance before going. When I go I take the host in my mouth, I am not worthy to have it in my hands, and this woman treat the host like it is bread and not the Body and Blood of Christ.
I hope this will be the last “outreach” for gays since they acted like a pack of imbeciles during a religious ceremony.
The Bishop need to do some serious thought about never having another fiasco like this, he also need to tell this woman that her days of Cantoring and singing in the choir are over. As well as her days of receiving Communion.
If she belonged to the Church I go to, I would do all I could to get her out of it. What she did was Blasphemy,an outrage.
Good for the cardinal, and you can’t receive the Body of Christ from just anybody, all he ended up with was a plain wafer, hope he is happy
If these people are identifying themselves as “gay” or “lesbian” (or “trangender” or whatever other drivel), they certainly are NOT “struggling with same sex attraction,”. They’re wallowing in it. They’re unrepentant and creating a public scandal.

Ridiculous - they are using an occasion when the glory belongs to God to grandstand and call attention to themselves.
Why not find a church that is in line with their beliefs?
I’m a Catholic and I would not expect to go to a Methodist church and participate in communion - I’m not in communion with their beliefs and I have too much respect for them to make it a travesty.
