The Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints has ruled that a Hawaiian womans cure from cancer was a miracle linked to her prayers to Blessed Father Damien De Veuster. The missionary priest, who was renowned for working with leprosy patients, is now one step closer to being declared a saint.
Audrey Toguchi, a 79-year-old retired schoolteacher who lives in Aiea, became ill in 1997 with a lump on her left thigh that was discovered to be cancerous. She asked her sisters to accompany her to Kalaupapa to pray at Father Damiens grave.
I prayed that he would ask God to heal me, Toguchi told the Honolulu Star Bulletin.
After surgery in January 1998, Dr. Walter Chang told her that her rare form of cancer, liposarcoma, had spread to both lungs.
"He said, 'I cannot do anything for you. No surgery is possible.'," she said.
"I went back to Kalaupapa, Toguchi continued. I went to Mass and received Communion and then I went to Damien's grave. I said, 'Please, ask God to cure this cancer.'
"Doctor Chang took pictures of my lungs and every month, it was less and less until after four months, the cancer was gone. He was flabbergasted."

Blessed Damien of Molokai, pray for us!
Catholic ping!
Forgot to include the barf alert.
Note the statement (from the Catholic News Agency) that this person is about to “be declared a saint” - as if any mortal or religious organization can do such a thing. All who are redeemed by the blood of Christ are saints. Chasing after sings and wonders is not highly spoken of in Scripture - much less is it listed as a qualification for being declared a saint.
I’m not Catholic. Would someone please explain why they pray to Saints and have statues and emblems and medals for Saints? Isn’t this against the doctrine “Thou shalt have no other Gods before me”? Just wondered.
Great post! Thanks! Anything which reminds us that God makes miracles for us, real miracles, is always worth posting. I have seen them in my own family through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos and +Nektarios of Aegina.
“Blessed Damien of Molokai, pray for us!”
Indeed.
Very interesting news. Thanks for posting this. Growing up in the shadow, as it were, of Damien, I’ve always been fond of the man and his works.
Nobody forgot to include anything. Buzz off.
Nice to have a record, although I’m not trying to bait Catholics. I try to point out unBiblical doctrine and warn people away from it. Such error takes place in churches of all stripes and denominations.
Next up, Fr. McGivney!
"I went back to Kalaupapa, Toguchi continued. I went to Mass and received Communion and then I went to Damien's grave. I said, 'Please, ask God to cure this cancer.'
The lady certainly understands the intercession of the saints.
In the statement, Bishop Silva said I give thanks and praise to God for the news I received this morning!
So does Bishop Silva.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow.
I’ve been told to “Buzz off”. Not sure I’m supposed to answer.
We ask the saints to pray for us. It’s no different than me asking you to pray for me. We’re all in the communion of saints.
Saints are normal men and women who have done extraordinary things. It’s something we can all shoot for.
Have a blessed day!
The truth will set you free, but this ain't it.
A wonderful new saint.
Fr. Damien's vocation to the lepers reminds us of the true sacrificial love that God calls us to as He forms us further into the likeness of Jesus, His Son. Fr. Damien's life is a boldly-drawn image of theosis in this lifetime.

Been told to Buzz Off. Can’t reply. sigh
Yes, we Catholics are an odd lot. We ask friends and neighbors to pray for us, we even ask the dead to pray for us. We even pray for the dead. Why? It is something that we believe in called “Everlasting Life”.
Asking Saints (even Jesus earthly Mother) to pray for us is because we believe “special souls” may be even closer to God. We pray directly to the Chairman of the Board, but also ask his MOTHER and close friends to interceed for us at times.
I point out what I think is unBiblical practice, get accused of bashing people, get told to “Buzz Off” by an admin, and called a demon (that last bit would appear to be unBiblical, as well).
Bad form, from those who claim to be in Christ. And contrary to the rules of this forum.
