Monday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Psalm: Monday 40

Reading 1
Prv 3:27-34

Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim
when it is in your power to do it for him.
Say not to your neighbor, “Go, and come again,
tomorrow I will give,” when you can give at once.

Plot no evil against your neighbor,
against one who lives at peace with you.
Quarrel not with a man without cause,
with one who has done you no harm.

Envy not the lawless man
and choose none of his ways:
To the LORD the perverse one is an abomination,
but with the upright is his friendship.

The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked,
but the dwelling of the just he blesses;
When dealing with the arrogant, he is stern,
but to the humble he shows kindness.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 15:2-3a, 3bc-4ab, 5

R. (1) The just one shall live on your holy mountain, O Lord.
He who walks blamelessly and does justice;
who thinks the truth in his heart
and slanders not with his tongue.
R. The just one shall live on your holy mountain, O Lord.
Who harms not his fellow man,
nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor;
By whom the reprobate is despised,
while he honors those who fear the LORD.
R. The just one shall live on your holy mountain, O Lord.
Who lends not his money at usury
and accepts no bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things
shall never be disturbed.
R. The just one shall live on your holy mountain, O Lord.

Gospel
Lk 8:16-18

Jesus said to the crowd:
“No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel
or sets it under a bed;
rather, he places it on a lampstand
so that those who enter may see the light.
For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible,
and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.
Take care, then, how you hear.
To anyone who has, more will be given,
and from the one who has not,
even what he seems to have will be taken away.”

September Devotion: Our Lady of Sorrows

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Due to her feast day on September 15, the month of September has traditionally been set aside to honor Our Lady of Sorrows. All the sorrows of Mary (the prophecy of Simeon, the three days' loss, etc.) are merged in the supreme suffering at the Passion. In the Passion, Mary suffered a martyrdom of the heart because of Our Lord's torments and the greatness of her love for Him. "She it was," says Pope Pius XII, "who immune from all sin, personal or inherited, and ever more closely united with her Son, offered Him on Golgotha to the Eternal Father together with the holocaust of her maternal rights and motherly love. As a new Eve, she made this offering for all the children of Adam contaminated through his unhappy fall. Thus she, who was the mother of our Head according to the flesh, became by a new title of sorrow and glory the spiritual mother of all His members."

INVOCATIONS
Mary most sorrowful, Mother of Christians, pray for us.
Virgin most sorrowful, pray for us.

TO THE QUEEN OF MARTYRS
Mary, most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, accept the sincere homage of my filial affection. Into thy heart, pierced by so many swords, do thou welcome my poor soul. Receive it as the companion of thy sorrows at the foot of the Cross, on which Jesus died for the redemption of the world. With thee, O sorrowful Virgin, I will gladly suffer all the trials, contradictions, and infirmities which it shall please our Lord to send me. I offer them all to thee in memory of thy sorrows, so that every thought of my mind, and every beat of my heart may be an act of compassion and of love for thee. And do thou, sweet Mother, have pity on me, reconcile me to thy divine Son Jesus, keep me in His grace, and assist me in my last agony, so that I may be able to meet thee in heaven and sing thy glories. Amen.

TO THE MOTHER OF SORROWS
Most holy Virgin. and Mother, whose soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow in the Passion of thy divine Son, and who in His glorious Resurrection wast filled with never-ending joy at His triumph; obtain for us who call upon thee, so to be partakers in the adversities of Holy Church and the sorrows of the Sovereign Pontiff, as to be found worthy to rejoice with them in the consolations for which we pray, in the charity and peace of the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

IN HONOR OF THE SORROWS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
O most holy and afflicted Virgin! Queen of Martyrs! thou who didst stand motionless beneath the Cross, witnessing the agony of thy expiring Son--through the unceasing sufferings of thy life of sorrow, and the bliss which now more than amply repays thee for thy past trials, look down with a mother's tenderness and pity on me, who kneel before thee to venerate thy dolors, and place my requests, with filial confidence, in the sanctuary of thy wounded heart; present them, I beseech thee, on my behalf, to Jesus Christ, through the merits of His own most sacred death and passion, together with thy sufferings at the foot of the cross, and through the united efficacy of both obtain the grant of my present petition. To whom shall I resort in my wants and miseries if not to thee, O Mother of Mercy, who, having so deeply drunk of the chalice of thy Son, canst compassionate the woes of those who still sigh in the land of exile? Offer for me to my Savior one drop of the Blood which flowed from His sacred veins, one of the tears which trickled from His divine eyes, one of the sighs which rent His adorable Heart. O refuge of the universe and hope of the whole world, do not reject my humble prayer, but graciously obtain the grant of my petition.

TO OUR LADY OF SORROWS
O most holy Virgin, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ: by the overwhelming grief you experienced when you witnessed the martyrdom, the crucifixion, and the death of your divine Son, look upon me with eyes of compassion, and awaken in my heart a tender commiseration for those sufferings, as well as a sincere detestation of my sins, in order that, being disengaged from all undue affection for the passing joys of this earth, I may sigh after the eternal Jerusalem, and that henceforward all my thoughts and all my actions may be directed towards this one most desirable object. Honor, glory, and love to our divine Lord Jesus, and to the holy and immaculate Mother of God. Amen.    --Saint Bonaventure

Let us pray, --- O God, in whose Passion, according to the prophecy of Simeon, a sword of grief pierced through the most sweet soul of Thy glorious Blessed Virgin Mother Mary: grant that we, who celebrate the memory of her Seven Sorrows, may obtain the happy effect of Thy Passion, Who lives and reigns world without end,
Amen.

The Seven Sorrows of Our Lady

1. The Prophecy of Simeon
2. The Flight into Egypt .
3. The Loss of Jesus in the Temple
4. Mary meets Jesus Carrying the Cross
5. The Crucifixion
6. Mary Receives the Dead Body of Her Son
7. The Burial of Her Son and Closing of the Tomb.
Consecration to Our Lady of Sorrows

Most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, Mary, would that I could be in Heaven, there to contemplate the honors rendered to thee by the Most Holy Trinity and by the whole Heavenly Court! But since I am still a pilgrim in this vale of tears, receive from me, thy unworthy servant and a poor sinner, the most sincere homage and the most perfect act of vassalage a human creature can offer thee.
In thy Immaculate Heart, pierced with so many swords of sorrow, I place today my poor soul forever; receive me as a partaker in thy dolors, and never suffer that I should depart from that Cross on which thy only begotten Son expired for me.
With thee, O Mary, I will endure all the sufferings, contradictions, infirmities, with which it will please thy Divine Son to visit me in this life. All of them I offer to thee, in memory of the Dolors which thou didst suffer during thy life, that every thought of my mind, every beating of my heart may henceforward be an act of compassion to thy Sorrows, and of complacency for the glory thou now enjoyest in Heaven.
Since then, O Dear Mother, I now compassionate thy Dolors, and rejoice in seeing thee glorified, do thou also have compassion on me, and reconcile me to thy Son Jesus, that I may become thy true and loyal son (daughter); come on my last day and assist me in my last agony, even as thou wert present at the Agony of thy Divine Son Jesus, that from this painful exile I may go to Heaven, there to be made partaker of thy glory.
Amen.

Parable of the Sower. The Meaning of the Parables (Continuation)

(Jesus told the crowd,) [16] "No one after lighting a lamp covers it with
a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who
enter may see the light. [17] For nothing is hid that shall not be made
manifest, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light.
[18] Take heed then how you hear; for to him who has will more be gi-
ven, and from him who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be
taken away."

Commentary:

[There is no commentary available for Luke 8:16-18. The commentary
for the same parable found in Mark 4:21-25 states:]

16-17. This parable contains a double teaching. Firstly, it says that
hrist's doctrine should not be kept hidden; rather, it must be preached
throughout the whole world. We find the same idea elsewhere in the
Gospels: "What you hear whispered, proclaim it upon the housetops"
(Mt 10:27); "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole
of creation..." (Mk 16:15). The other teaching is that the Kingdom which
Christ proclaims has such ability to penetrate all hearts that, at the end
of time, when Jesus comes again, not a single human action, in favor or
against Christ, will not become public or manifest.

24-25. Our Lord never gets tired of asking the Apostles, the seed which
will produce the Church, to listen carefully to the teaching he is giving:
they are receiving a treasure for which they will be held to account. "To
him who has will more be given...": he who responds to grace will be
given more grace and will yield more and more fruit; but he who does
not will become more and more impoverished (cf. Mt 25:14- 30). There-
fore, there is no limit to the development of the theological virtues: "If
you say 'Enough,' you are already dead" (St. Augustine, "Sermon" 51).
A soul who wants to make progress in the interior life will pray along
these lines: "Lord, may I have due measure in everything, except in
Love" (J. Escriva, "The Way", 427).

[The commentary for still another similar parable found in Matthew 13:
12 states:]

12. Jesus is addressing his disciples and explaining to them that, pre-
cisely because they have faith in him and want to have a good grasp of
his teaching, they will be given a deeper understanding of divine truths.
But those who do not "follow him" (cf. note on Mt 4:18-22) will later lose
interest in the things of God and will grow even blinder: it is as if the
little they have is being taken away from them.

This verse also helps us understand the meaning of the parable of the
sower, a parable which gives us a wonderful explanation of the super-
natural economy of divine grace: God gives grace, and man freely res-
ponds to that grace. The result is that those who respond to grace
generously receive additional grace and so grow steadily in grace and
holiness; whereas those who reject God's gifts become closed up
within themselves; through their selfishness and attachment to sin they
eventually lose God's grace entirely. In this verse, then, our Lord gives
a clear warning: with the full weight of His divine authority He exhorts
us--without taking away our freedom--to act responsibly: the gifts God
keeps sending us should yield fruit; we should make good use of the
opportunities for Christian sanctification which are offered us in the
course of our lives.

First reading Proverbs 3:27 - 34 ©
Do not refuse a kindness to anyone who begs it,
if it is in your power to perform it.
Do not say to your neighbour, ‘Go away! Come another time!
I will give it you tomorrow’, if you can do it now.
Do not plot harm against your neighbour
as he lives unsuspecting next door.
Do not pick a groundless quarrel with a man
who has done you no harm.
Do not emulate the man of violence,
 never model your conduct on his;
for the wilful wrong-doer is abhorrent to the Lord,
who confides only in honest men.
The Lord’s curse lies on the house of the wicked,
but he blesses the home of the virtuous.
He mocks those who mock,
but accords his favour to the humble.

Office of Readings -- Awakening Prayer

Office of Readings

If this is the first Hour that you are reciting today, you should precede it with the Invitatory Psalm.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 6
A prayer for relief from affliction
Lord, do not condemn me in your fury: do not destroy me in your anger.

Take pity on me, Lord, for I am sick; heal me, Lord, for my bones are in disarray.
My spirit is deeply disturbed, and you, Lord – how long?

Turn to me, Lord, rescue my spirit: in your pity, save me.
If I die, how can I praise you? Can anyone in the underworld proclaim your name?

I struggle and groan, soak my bed with weeping night after night;
my eyes are troubled with sadness: I grow older as my enemies watch.

Leave me, all who do evil, for the Lord has heard my voice as I wept.
The Lord listened to my prayer, granted me what I asked.

Let my enemies be ashamed and confounded:
let shame and confusion overtake them soon.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 9A (9)
Thanksgiving for victory
I will thank you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of your wonders.
I will rejoice in you and triumph, make music to your name, O Most High.

Because my enemies are in full retreat; they stumble and perish at your presence.
For you have given judgement in my favour, upheld my case, taken your seat on the throne of judgement.

You have rebuked the nations, condemned the wicked, wiped out their name for ever and for ever.

My enemies are no more; their land is a desert for ever. You have demolished their cities, their very memory is wiped away.

But the Lord will reign for ever: he has made his throne his judgement-seat.
He himself will judge the whole world in justice, judge the peoples impartially.

The Lord will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in good times and in bad.
Let them put their hope in you, those who know your name; for you, Lord, have never abandoned those who seek you.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 9A (9)
Sing to the Lord who dwells in Sion, proclaim to the nations his loving care.
For he has remembered the poor and avenged them with blood: he has not forgotten the cry of the weak.

Take pity on me, Lord: see how my enemies torment me.
You raise me up from the gates of death, and I will proclaim your praise at the gates of the daughter of Sion; I will rejoice in your salvation.

The nations have fallen into the pit that they made, into the very trap that they set: their feet are caught fast.
The Lord’s justice shines forth: the sinner is trapped by his very own action.

Sinners will go down to the underworld, and all nations that forget God.
For the weak will not always be forgotten: the hope of the weak will never perish.

Rise up, Lord, let men not be complacent: let the nations come before you to be judged.
Put fear into them, Lord: let them know that they are only men.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Reading Ezekiel 34:1 - 31 ©
The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows: Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them:
Shepherds, the Lord says this: Trouble for the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Shepherds ought to feed their flock, yet you have fed on milk, you have dressed yourselves in wool, you have sacrificed the fattest sheep, but failed to feed the flock. You have failed to make weak sheep strong, or to care for the sick ones, or bandage the wounded ones. You have failed to bring back strays or look for the lost. On the contrary, you have ruled them cruelly and violently. For lack of a shepherd they have scattered, to become the prey of any wild animal; they have scattered far. My flock is straying this way and that, on mountains and on high hills; my flock has been scattered all over the country; no one bothers about them and no one looks for them.
For the Lord says this: I am going to look after my flock myself and keep all of it in view. As a shepherd keeps all his flock in view when he stands up in the middle of his scattered sheep, so shall I keep my sheep in view. I shall rescue them from wherever they have been scattered during the mist and darkness. I shall bring them out of the countries where they are; I shall gather them together from foreign countries and bring them back to their own land. I shall pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in every inhabited place in the land. I shall feed them in good pasturage; the high mountains of Israel will be their grazing ground. There they will rest in good grazing ground; they will browse in rich pastures on the mountains of Israel. I myself will pasture my sheep, I myself will show them where to rest–it is the Lord who speaks. I shall look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the wounded and make the weak strong. I shall watch over the fat and healthy. I shall be a true shepherd to them.

Reading A sermon of St Augustine
Insist upon the message, whether it be welcome or not
The straying sheep you have not recalled; the lost sheep you have not sought. In one way or another, we go on living between the hands of robbers and the teeth of raging wolves, and in light of these present dangers we ask your prayers. The sheep moreover are insolent. The shepherd seeks out the straying sheep, but because they have wandered away and are lost they say that they are not ours. “ Why do you want us? Why do you seek us?” they ask, as if their straying and being lost were not the very reason for our wanting them and seeking them out. “If I am straying”, he says, “if I am lost, why do you want me?” You are straying, that is why I wish to recall you. You have been lost, I wish to find you. “But I wish to stray”, he says: “I wish to be lost”.
So you wish to stray and be lost? How much better that I do not also wish this. Certainly, I dare say, I am unwelcome. But I listen to the Apostle who says: Preach the word; insist upon it, welcome and unwelcome. Welcome to whom? Unwelcome to whom? By all means welcome to those who desire it; unwelcome to those who do not. However unwelcome, I dare to say: “You wish to stray, you wish to be lost; but I do not want this”. For the one whom I fear does not wish this. And should I wish it, consider his words of reproach: The straying sheep you have not recalled; the lost sheep you have not sought. Shall I fear you rather than him? Remember, we must all present ourselves before the judgement seat of Christ.
I shall recall the straying; I shall seek the lost. Whether they wish it or not, I shall do it. And should the brambles of the forests tear at me when I seek them, I shall force myself through all straits; I shall put down all hedges. So far as the God whom I fear grants me the strength, I shall search everywhere. I shall recall the straying; I shall seek after those on the verge of being lost. If you do not want me to suffer, do not stray, do not become lost. It is enough that I lament your straying and loss. No, I fear that in neglecting you, I shall also kill what is strong. Consider the passage that follows: And what was strong you have destroyed. Should I neglect the straying and lost, the strong one will also take delight in straying and in being lost.
A concluding prayer may follow here.

Collect:
Father, guide us, as you guide creation according to your law of love. May we love one another and come to perfection in the eternal life prepared for us. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

"No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hid that shall not be made manifest, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light. Meditation
Our Lady did not say to her Son, 'Come down,' but her eyes asked Him to stay there. She knew that the Child who came to her as the world's Savior must save, not Himself, but the world.

I can imagine if you or I had seen Our Lady after the Crucifixion, we should have been astonished at her peace. I think she came down from Calvary consoling Mary Magdalene, and what we do know of her during those terrible days after the death of her Son seems to confirm that. We have just one scene. She is in the Upper Room. An ordinary mother could never have dared to face again that Upper Room where everything reminded her of Him, and of Him in His most poignant moments. Every memory would be a pain, no object of consolation would be there, but a well-spring of sorrow. She is there among a crowd (we are told the very numbers); there is no nursing of her grief away from everyone, but she stayed in the very midst of them all, as if she had to give them consolation. I feel sure many eyes were dried when she came swiftly into their midst. It was almost as if she had never had a Son. They were all her dear children, in the Upper Room. Was there ever a mother that might have been justified in hating mankind, and in brooding over her loss, as if she had a grievance against the world? Yet the one thing about her and her Son is they have no grievance against anyone. She had a memory charged, of course, with ten thousand sorrows and a heart now overloaded with ten thousand loves, but no grievance against the world.

Where did our dear Lady learn this perfect attitude towards suffering? — From her Son. It came of that grace that came to her in the moment of her soul's joy, the grace won for her by the death of her Son foreseen. She learnt compassion from Him who had compassion on the multitude.

A Light in the Darkness
September 25, 2006

As Christians we need to not lose hope; we carry with us the light of faith.

Monday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
Father Christopher Scroggin, LC

Luke 8:16-18
Jesus said to the crowd: "No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away."

Introductory Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you for all that you give me, especially the Christian vocation which is so dear to me. Jesus’ words challenge me to live my vocation with love and not hide or hoard the treasure you have given me. Grant me the strength to love you more, to hope in you and believe in your will for me.

Petition: Lord Jesus, grant me the grace to let my light shine and not fear the challenges or struggles of everyday life. Strengthen me for the task at hand and ensure that I will never hide from others the light of my faith.

1. Darkness.  When I was a boy, my family once took an excursion to a famous set of caves in southern Missouri. In one section of the cave the guide turned the lights out to make us experience the utter darkness of the cave. You couldn’t even see your own hand in front of your face. Sometimes our culture and society can resemble that dark cave when we consider the spiritual darkness of abortion, euthanasia, same-sex unions, moral relativism, and an ever-increasing secularized society. As Christians we need to not lose hope; we carry with us the light of faith. As the Gospel says, when we place our light on a lampstand, all who enter will see the light of Christ.

2. The Light.  As Christians, we believe that Jesus Christ rose from the dead and that death has no more power over him. He is the Light and it is by his authority and with his power that we too share in the Light. He has wanted our collaboration in this mission of giving light to the world in which we live. Let us share this light with all.

3. A Reflection of the Light.  Our lives must reflect the Son of God in the world. A life of grace lived in accord with the Gospel enables us to share God’s light everywhere. When I live a life of prayer with frequent confession and a regular reception of the Eucharist, when I live by the Beatitudes, when I devote myself faithfully to apostolate, Christ’s love is reflected in my actions and life. Others will see Christ in me, and through me his Kingdom will thrive.

Dialogue with Christ: Lord Jesus, I ask you for the strength to bring your light into the darkest parts of the world. Keep me faithful and true, and let your love reflect off me to reach all your children. Help me never to waver in my resolve as your follower, and help me to witness to all men and women.

Resolution: Today I will share my faith with someone: a co-worker, a friend in need, or a family member.

Lauds -- Morning Prayer

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

If this is the first Hour that you are reciting today, you should precede it with the Invitatory Psalm.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 5
A morning prayer for help
Let my words come to your ears, O Lord: hear my sighs.
Listen to the voice of my crying, my King and my God.

As I pray to you in the morning, Lord, listen to my voice; in the morning I will stand before you and await you.
You are not a God who loves evil. The wicked cannot stay near you, the unjust cannot remain in your presence.

You hate all who do evil – you destroy all who speak falsehood – the Lord abominates the bloody and deceitful man.
But in the abundance of your mercy you will admit me to your house: I will worship you in your holy temple, with fear and reverence.

Lord, guide me in your justice, protect me from my enemies: let me see the path I must follow.
For there is no truth in their mouth – their heart is a bottomless pit – their throat is a wide open grave – their tongue seduces.
Punish them, Lord, and let their own plans destroy them. On account of their crimes, thrust them from your presence; for they are rebels against you.

Let all who hope in you rejoice, triumph for ever.
You will shelter them and they will glory in you.
For you bless the just, O Lord, and your good will surrounds them like a shield.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle 1 Chronicles 29
To God alone be honour and glory
Blessed are you, Lord, God of our father Israel, through all the ages.
All power and greatness are yours, O God; glory, splendour, and majesty.
All things are yours, in the heavens and on the earth; you rule over them, Lord, you are high above them all.
All riches and glory come from you, you rule over all things.

In your hand lie strength and power, your hand raises all things and sets them firm.
So now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 28 (29)
Praise the word of the Lord
Give to the Lord, all his children, his glory and power, give to the Lord the glory of his name.
Worship the Lord in holy splendour.

The voice of the Lord is heard over the waters: the God of majesty thunders, God above all the waters.
The voice of the Lord in his power, the voice of the Lord in his greatness.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, the Lord breaks down the cedars of Lebanon.
The Lord makes Lebanon leap like a calf, Sirion like a wild ox.

The voice of the Lord cuts flames in two; the voice of the Lord beats on the desert, the Lord stuns the desert of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord puts the deer to flight, it empties the thickets; in his sanctuary, all praise his glory.

The Lord dwells above the raging flood, he is enthroned as king for ever.
The Lord will give strength to his people, the Lord will bless his people with peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
A short Bible reading and responsory may follow here.
Canticle Benedictus
The Messiah and his forerunner
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and brought about their redemption.
He has raised up the sign of salvation in the house of his servant David,
as he promised through the mouth of the holy ones, his prophets through the ages:
to rescue us from our enemies and all who hate us, to take pity on our fathers,
to remember his holy covenant and the oath he swore to Abraham our father,
that he would give himself to us, that we could serve him without fear – freed from the hands of our enemies –
in uprightness and holiness before him, for all of our days.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his path,
to let his people know their salvation, so that their sins may be forgiven.
Through the bottomless mercy of our God, one born on high will visit us
to give light to those who walk in darkness, who live in the shadow of death;
to lead our feet in the path of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Some short prayers may follow here, to offer up the day's work to God.
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.
A concluding prayer may follow here.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Homily of the Day

Homily of the Day

Title:   Listening: This Chance May Be Your Last!
Author:   Monsignor Dennis Clark, Ph.D
Date:   Monday, September 25, 2006

Prv 3:27-34 / Lk 8:16-18

Today’s gospel ends with an enigmatic last line that lays itself open to confusion. "[T]o the one who has, more will be given; and he who has not, will lose even the little he thinks he has." That sounds like the worst side of capitalism: The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. But it’s not.

The whole thing comes clear if we pay attention to the beginning of the sentence which says, "Take heed how you hear...." Jesus is telling us that if we listen to Him with open minds and open hearts, the tiny bit of wisdom and understanding that we’ve already gained will grow and grow with His help. If, on the other hand, our hearts are closed to Him, even the little bit of wisdom that we think we’ve got will be shown for what it is: nothing.

So many thousands of people heard Jesus speak God’s Good News "in the flesh," and yet so many of them just walked away for any number of "reasons." We can always find a "reason" for stalling or putting off our listening to Him until tomorrow. When we’re tempted to do that, we would do well to ask how many more opportunities we’re certain of having. The correct answer is: None! So seize the opportunity while it’s at hand! You’ll never regret it!

Vespers -- Evening Prayer

Vespers (Evening Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 10 (11)
The Lord, support of the just
I trust in the Lord, so why do you say to me:
“Fly up to the mountain like a sparrow”?

“For the wicked have drawn their bows, fitted the arrow to the string, to shoot in darkness at the upright of heart.
When the foundations are being overthrown, what are the just to do?”

The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven.
His eyes look down on the poor, he examines the children of men.
The Lord scrutinises the just and the unjust, and his heart hates those who do evil.
He rains down coals upon the wicked, fire and brimstone and a scorching wind: this is what he gives them to drink.

For the Lord is just and loves just deeds, and the upright shall see his face.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 14 (15)
Who is worthy to face the Lord?
Lord, who will live in your tent? Who will dwell on your holy mountain?

Whoever comes there without stain, acts rightly, speaks truth in his heart.
Whoever does not speak deceitfully, – or do harm to his neighbour, – or slander him.

Whoever despises the evil-doer, but he reveres those who fear the Lord.
Whoever swears and keeps his word, come what may – lends his money without usury – takes no bribe to condemn the innocent.

Whoever lives like this will stand firm for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle Ephesians 1
God the Saviour
Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us, in Christ, with every spiritual blessing in heaven.

In love, he chose us before the creation of the world,
to be holy and spotless in his sight.

He predestined us to be his adopted children through Jesus Christ,
simply because it pleased him to do so.

This he did for the praise of the glory of his grace,
of his free gift of us to his Beloved,

in whose blood we have gained redemption,
and the forgiveness of our sins.

This he did according to the riches of his grace,
which he gave us in abundance,

with all wisdom and discernment,
revealing to us the mysteries of his will,
because it pleased him to do so.

In this action he has planned, in the fulfilment of time,
to bring all things together in Christ,
from the heavens and from the earth.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
A short Bible reading and responsory may follow here.
Canticle Magnificat
My soul rejoices in the Lord
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God, my salvation.
For he has shown me such favour –
 me, his lowly handmaiden.
Now all generations will call me blessed,
because the mighty one has done great things for me.
His name is holy,
his mercy lasts for generation after generation
 for those who revere him.

He has put forth his strength:
he has scattered the proud and conceited,
 torn princes from their thrones;
 but lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
he has remembered his mercy as he promised to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Lk 8:16-18
# Douay-Rheims Vulgate
16 Now no man lighting a candle covereth it with a vessel or putteth it under a bed: but setteth it upon a candlestick, that they who come in may see the light. nemo autem lucernam accendens operit eam vaso aut subtus lectum ponit sed supra candelabrum ponit ut intrantes videant lumen
17 For there is not any thing secret that shall not be made manifest, nor hidden that shall not be known and come abroad. non enim est occultum quod non manifestetur nec absconditum quod non cognoscatur et in palam veniat
18 Take heed therefore how you hear. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given: and whosoever hath not, that also which he thinketh he hath shall be taken away from him. videte ergo quomodo auditis qui enim habet dabitur illi et quicumque non habet etiam quod putat se habere auferetur ab illo

Meditation
Luke 8:16-18

Asking her young son to remove his hat for the third time, his frustrated mother said, “Didn’t you hear me? I asked you to remove your hat!”

How many times are we like this young boy in regards to the word of God? Sure, we hear it proclaimed at Mass. Its sounds pass into our ears and stimulate our auditory nerves, but we don’t absorb it. We may even be able to repeat the main point of the readings, as if we were taking a quiz. But God wants so much more to happen whenever we read or hear his word in Scripture. That’s why Jesus warns us to take heed to how we hear (Luke 8:18). He wants to reveal his heart and his mind to us. He doesn’t just want to inform us; he wants to transform us as well.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux once said that a person who thirsts for God, who eagerly studies and meditates on Scripture is certain to find the one for whom he thirsts. That is quite a promise. No matter who we are, no matter how many sins we may have committed, no matter how smart or dumb we may feel, all of us can meet the Lord as we ponder Scripture prayerfully.

Of course, this entails some work on our part. It requires an open heart, a readiness to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit, and a certain level of commitment and consistency. But isn’t it worth it? As we study and meditate on Scripture, the Holy Spirit himself will take all that Jesus taught centuries ago and bring it to life in our hearts. He will internalize the word so that we can understand how it applies to the circumstances of our own lives.

Who best exemplifies this openness to God’s word? Probably the Virgin Mary. She not only heard the word but with ears open to the Holy Spirit, she received it with an open heart. And as a result, the Word took flesh within her. This can happen to us as well. Jesus can come to birth in each of our hearts . . . if only we have ears to hear!

“Lord, your servant St. Jerome once said that ignorance of the Scriptures was ignorance of you—and I deeply want to know you. Jesus, send your Spirit to me so that I can embrace your word and let it take root within me.”

Proverbs 3:27-34; Psalm 15:2-5

EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER

"The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, but the dwelling of the just He blesses." —Proverbs 3:33

The Lord wants your house to be blessed and to be a blessing. If you have never had your pastor bless your house, ask him to do so immediately. The first thing Jesus told the apostles to do upon entering a house was to bless it (Mt 10:12). If your home is deserving, the blessing will descend upon it (Mt 10:13).

To make your home "deserving," make it a house of prayer (Is 56:7), dethrone the TV set, and remove any objects, articles, and reading material which do not give glory to God. If you make your home "deserving," the blessing will remain.

Now you will see conversions in your house. It will not be uncommon for people to repent of sin and give their lives to Jesus right in your living room. Healings, signs, and wonders will accompany the word as it is put on the lampstand of your home (Mk 16:20; Lk 8:16). Many will receive the Holy Spirit while visiting your home. Even demons will flee as they encounter God's holy presence in your home. Your blessed home will become an outpost and a base for the invasion of this world by Jesus' kingdom of light.

Prayer: Father, bless my home, marriage, family, and self. We are Yours.
Promise: "Refuse no one the good on which he has a claim when it is in your power to do it for him. Say not to your neighbor, 'Go and come again, tomorrow I will give,' when you can give at once." —Prv 3:27-28
Praise: Even though John's house was damaged by fire, God blessed him by having his house be repaired to be in even better shape than before.

Compline -- Night Prayer

Compline (Night Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 85 (86)
A poor man's prayer in time of trouble
Lord God, you are full of mercies, patient and true. Alleluia.
Turn your ear to me, Lord, and hear me,
for I am poor and destitute.
Keep my life safe, for I am faithful;
O God, save your servant, who trusts in you.

Take pity upon me, O Lord,
for I call to you all the day long.
Make your servant’s heart glad,
for to you, O Lord, I have raised it.
For you, Lord, are gentle and mild:
you are kind to all those who call on you.

Let your ears hear my prayer, O Lord!
Turn to the voice of my pleading!
In my time of trouble I call on you,
for you, O Lord, will hear me.

No other god is like you, O Lord,
and nothing compares with your works.
All people – all nations you made –
 will come and worship before you;
they will give glory to your name.
For you are great, you work wonders:
 you alone are God.

O Lord, teach me your paths,
and I will come to your truth.
Make my heart simple and guileless,
so that it honours your name.
I will proclaim you, Lord my God,
and give you praise with all my heart.
I will give glory to your name for ever,
for your great kindness is upon me:
you have rescued me from the deepest depths.

O God, the proud rise against me,
in the meetings of the powerful they seek my life:
they do not keep you in their sight.
And you, Lord, are a God of compassion,
full of mercies, patient and true.
Look upon me, have mercy upon me,
give your strength and protection to your servant
your servant, the child of your handmaid.

Give me a sign of your goodness,
 let my enemies see it and be confounded;
because you, O Lord, have helped me and given me comfort.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Lord God, you are full of mercies, patient and true. Alleluia.

Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10
God chose that we should receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us; so that, asleep or awake, we should still live with him.

Short Responsory ?
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle Nunc Dimittis
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace. Alleluia.
Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace.
 You have fulfilled your promise.
My own eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness;
the glory of your people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace. Alleluia.

Prayer
Let us pray.
Give our bodies rest, Lord, to restore them; and let the seeds sown by our labours today grow and yield an eternal harvest.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
A M E N
An antiphon to Our Lady should be recited here.
