Prayer for the Election of a Pope - Lord God, you are our eternal shepherd and guide. In your mercy grant your Church a shepherd who will walk in your ways and whose watchful care will bring us your blessing. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Collect, Mass for the Election of a Pope, Roman Missal)

I think it's very significant he took that name...like he's choosing to go with the prophecies along with all the other significances of the name....

Personally I think it has more to do with his nature as a studious Priest.

You are right though, we may never know how much the prophecies had to do with his choice.

What do I win for picking Benedict on "Name That Pope" here? http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1378034/posts?page=111#111

Don't think he didn't know the prophecy as well...St. Benedict is a great namesake, though...I like the image of Benedict puting order into the monastic movement, may Pope Benedict bring order to the church.

Many of these cardinals have had direct dealings with Ratzinger, which is why I don't think he'll be selected.

Cardinal Ratzinger, "The Inquisitor," is back in town, and he's in the Chair of Peter!

Dissenting Catholics better take note and amend their views to come into agreement with the Church on matters of Faith and Morals (especially contraception!).

If you would like to be added to or removed from my "orthodox Catholics" ping list, please send me a FReepmail.

--Dr. Brian Kopp (Polycarp IV)

And yes, Jim Robinson knows who I am and my current screen name. When we met at the March For Justice II in Washington, DC, we had a good laugh, and I apologized for being a jerk in the past. He appreciated our being there, and met my wife and three kids. (Of course, my family of five made up a large minority of the overall attendance.)

A topnotch orthodox believing theologian there to deal with all the relativist trash theologians...Expect to hear wailing from the American Dissident Church....

Praise God for our new Pope!

"How many winds of doctrine we have known in recent decades, how many ideological currents, how many ways of thinking... The small boat of thought of many Christians has often been tossed about by these waves - thrown from one extreme to the other: from Marxism to liberalism, even to libertinism; from collectivism to radical individualism; from atheism to a vague religious mysticism; from agnosticism to syncretism, and so forth. Every day new sects are created and what Saint Paul says about human trickery comes true, with cunning which tries to draw those into error (cf Eph 4, 14). Having a clear faith, based on the Creed of the Church, is often labeled today as a fundamentalism. Whereas, relativism, which is letting oneself be tossed and "swept along by every wind of teaching", looks like the only attitude (acceptable) to today's standards. We are moving towards a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as for certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires."

Did anyone see how thrilled the group of American priests was at the cardinals' choice? That says much, I think.

In honor of the German Pope Benedict XVI, the German Chorale setting of the Gloria

"All Glory Be to God on High"
by Nikolaus Decius, 1490?-1541
Translated by Catherine Winkworth, 1829-1878

1. All glory be to God on high,
Who hath our race befriended!
To us no harm shall now come nigh,
The strife at last is ended;
God showeth His good will to men,
And peace shall reign on earth again;
Oh, thank Him for His goodness!

2. We praise, we worship Thee, we trust,
And give Thee thanks forever,
O Father, that Thy rule is just
And wise and changes never.
Thy boundless power o'er all things reigns,
'Tis done whate'er Thy will ordains:
Well for us that Thou rulest!

3. O Jesus Christ, Thou only Son
Of God, Thy heavenly Father,
Who didst for all our sins atone
And Thy lost sheep dost gather:
Thou Lamb of God, to Thee on high,
From out our depths, we sinners cry,
Have mercy on us, Jesus!

4. O Holy Ghost, Thou precious Gift,
Thou Comforter unfailing,
O'er Satan's snares our souls uplift
And let Thy power availing
Avert our woes and calm our dread.
For us the Savior's blood was shed;
We trust in Thee to save us.

The Lutheran Hymnal
Hymn #237
Text: Luke 2:14
Author: Nikolaus Decius, 1525
Translated by: Catherine Winkworth, 1863, alt.
Titled: "Allein Gott in der Hoeh' sei Ehr'"
http://www.lutheran-hymnal.com/online/tlh-237.mid
Composer: Nikolaus Decius, 1539, asc.
Tune: "Allein Gott in der Hoeh'"

Allein Gott in der Höh' sei Ehr'
Nikolaus Decius, 1525

Allein Gott in der Höh' sei Ehr'
Und Dank für seine Gnade,
Darum daß nun und nimmermehr
Uns rühren kann kein Schade.
Ein Wohlgefall'n Gott an uns hat,
Nun ist groß' Fried' ohn' Unterlaß,
All' Fehd' hat nun ein Ende.

2. Wir loben, preis'n, anbeten dich
Für deine Ehr'; wir danken,
Daß du, Gott Vater ewiglich
Regierst ohn' alles Wanken.
Ganz ungemeß'n ist deine Macht,
Fort g'schieht, was dein Will' hat bedacht;
Wohl uns des feinen Herren!

3. O Jesu Christ, Sohn eingebor'n
Deines himmlischen Vaters,
Versöhner der'r, die war'n verlor'n,
Du Stiller unsers Haders,
Lamm Gottes, heil'ger Herr und Gott,
Nimm an die Bitt' von unsrer Not,
Erbarm' dich unser aller!

4. O Heil'ger Geist, du höchstes Gut,
Du allerheilsamst' Tröster,
Vor's Teufels G'walt fortan behüt',
Die Jesus Christ erlöset
Durch große Mart'r und bittern Tod,
Abwend all unsern Jamm'r und Not!
Darauf wir uns verlaßen.

I just can't shake the feeling that JPII knew this would happen before he died, as though this were his final gift to the Church.

VATICAN CITY - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, a hard-line guardian of conservative doctrine, was elected the new pope

Another black eye to the culture of perversion!!!!!!!!!.

Take that HOLLYWOOD, ACLU, NYT, WP, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN.

I am actually happy! :)
