Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) are calling on Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to determine if Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas violated federal ethics and tax laws. In the letter sent to Garland last week, the senators point to news reports revealing that Thomas did not disclose luxury trips or gifts over the past 20 years. Whitehouse and Wyden suggested that Thomas could be in violation of the Ethics in Government Act, which criminalizes a public servant for “knowingly and willfully” failing to file or report gifts and income from outside sources. “The...

Some wealthy Jews would like to influence American public opinion. They also appeal to their elected representatives. That is the "news" in a Washington Post "exclusive" that ran Thursday, and the paper makes clear that there is something very untoward about it. The piece, by reporters Hannah Natanson and Emmanuel Felton, is based on an inside look into an online chat that included New York City mayor Eric Adams and several wealthy New York businessmen. In that chat, several people pressed Adams to send the New York Police Department to clear out Columbia University’s dangerous, disgraceful, and violent pro-Hamas encampment,...

A group of House Democrats on Tuesday announced they would move to codify federal protections for transgender people. The proposal, dubbed the “Transgender Bill of Rights,” would codify the Supreme Court’s 2020 Bostock v. Clayton County decision that protects employees against discrimination for being gay or transgender. The proposal would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to explicitly include protections for gender identity and sex characteristics, expand access to gender-affirming care and ban conversion therapy. It would also require the attorney general to designate a liaison dedicated to overseeing enforcement of civil rights for transgender people and invest in...

Wilmer Puello-Mota, 28, a former security forces technical sergeant with the Massachusetts Air National Guard, allegedly fled the country in response to a pending criminal case against him for possession of child pornography. Social media posts claim he volunteered with the Russian military and fought against Ukrainians in a fierce battle for a key eastern city. "We are aware Mr. Puello-Mota left the country in response to civil criminal charges filed against him," Don...

Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy is inarguably the most witty person in the U.S. Senate. With a folksy quip or quotation always at the ready, Kennedy can effortlessly dismantle an opponent’s argument with his deadpan delivery while keeping the whole room in stitches. And the reason why his delivery hits so well is that he makes sense — the common kind, which has become almost extinct in these woke times. For example, discussing some of his Democratic colleagues who support transgender athletes in women’s sports on Fox News’ “The Story,” Kennedy once said, “One of my Democratic colleague’s witnesses testified that...

U.S. Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren is demanding an investigation into SpaceX, whose CEO Elon Musk could have disrupted Ukraine's attack on the Russian Black Sea Fleet by refusing to connect the Starlink network in occupied Crimea, Bloomberg reported on Sept. 12. "The Congress needs to investigate what’s happened here and whether we have the adequate tools to make sure foreign policy is conducted by the government and not by one billionaire," Warren said. She also wants the Pentagon to examine its contractual relationship with the company. Musk is expected to attend a closed-door meeting with senators in the Capitol on...

Former President Donald Trump professed to be honored to have the support of Black Lives Matter on Truth Social Wednesday after a co-founder of the organization’s Rhode Island chapter endorsed him on Fox & Friends on Tuesday. In his post, Trump praised Mark Fisher as a “great guy” and suggested that he had done more for Black people “than any other President” with the possible exception of Abraham Lincoln. “Spoke with Mark Fisher yesterday, a great guy, very honored to have his and BLM’s support,” declared Trump. “I have done more for Black people than any other President (Lincoln?), including...

McConnell of the U.S. District Court in Rhode Island on Monday summarily dismissed a complaint by John Anthony Castro, a lesser-known Republican presidential candidate from Texas, who sought to disqualify President Trump from the ballot. That marked another defeat for Mr. Castro, who has filed lawsuits in more than two dozen states over the past few months, including the one...

Public health officials’ efforts to protect citizens from COVID-19 infection and avert death may have backfired, a new study published in Health Economics suggests. What’s more, the efforts could be linked to excess deaths. Mandatory masking and social distancing became everyday directives for millions worldwide when the COVID-19 virus exploded onto the scene in 2020. Shelter-in-place (SIP) or stay-at-home orders quickly followed despite evidence supporting the protocol remaining mixed. Now, a cross-collaborative team of scientists from California, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts is expressing confidence based on results from rigorous research examining whether stay-at-home orders may not have been as effective...

In a less than 24-hour span this weekend, two more dead whales have been discovered off the northern Atlantic coast of the U.S., and pro-cetacean activists are blaming Joe Biden’s offshore wind initiative. One whale washed up on Rockaway Beach in New York, while the other was filmed floating off of Chatham, Mass. While the connection between whale fatalities and offshore wind power development hasn’t been rigorously studied, some environmentalists believe that loud sonar mapping, high boat traffic, and other disturbances to whales’ natural habitat are contributing to the surge in deaths. ... New England Fishermen’s Stewardship Association (NEFSA) said...

Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry lashed out at House lawmakers during a committee hearing on Thursday over the criticisms of his use of a private jet that has emitted hundreds of metric tons of carbon, even as he battles climate change. "I just don't agree with your facts, which began with the presentation of one of the most outrageously persistent lies that I hear, which is this private jet," Kerry said during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing. "We don't own a private jet. I don't own a private jet.

Joshua Miller, who serves as the Senate Democrat policy chairman, is accused of keying the vehicle that had been parked next to his own at the Garden City Center in Cranston, Rhode Island, on Thursday. The son of the car's owner immediately reported the incident to the police, stating that he heard a scratching noise and got out of the vehicle to see Miller holding a set of keys. When he confronted Miller about keying his vehicle, Miller simply denied it and walked away. That was until police arrived and charged Miller with a misdemeanor. The entire episode led to...

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — One Rhode Island city has found a creative way to combat homelessness in the community. Monday night, the Woonsocket city council approved the purchase of a 45-foot coach bus, which will be turned into a miniature shelter. For months, Woonsocket council members have been working to secure what’s called a “Dignity Bus.” The bus was originally found and pursued by the state, but the process was held up. “I was a little bit upset about it,” City Council Vice President Valerie Gonzalez recalled. “We had been working on it for quite a bit.”

US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm got an up-close look at the opportunities of offshore wind power on a ferry tour of the Block Island wind farm Friday, then discussed the challenges the industry faces at a roundtable discussion at a Quonset Development Corporation building here. “It’s such an amazing time, and we cannot squander it,” Granholm said at the roundtable. “I keep saying your hair has to be on fire.” Rhode Island, she said, is doing that. “Your hair is so on fire, you have a hat on,” she told the state’s acting energy commissioner, Chris Kearns, who was wearing...

Below is a slightly modified version of my column in The Hill on the call of Democrat members for Joe Biden to circumvent Congress and simply raise the debt limit unilaterally. It is more than a flawed constitutional theory. It is an abandonment of the core premise of our constitutional system that each branch would jealously protect its own institutional interests and powers. It is reminiscent of when Democrats applauded wildly when Barack Obama told them that he was going to circumvent Congress entirely after it refused to approve his immigration and environmental legislation. They were applauding their own institutional...
