8.0 Earthquake in Japan

I just got an EDIS alert that there was an 8.0 quake near Hokkaido, Japan. Tsunami warnings for AK. No news sources yet that I can find...

Out in the ocean, up near Hidaka.

Uh-oh. Tsunami warnings? A Japanese quake of that magnitude could mean tsunami warnings for the entire west coast of the US, depending on the quake's location and depth.

I'm going searching.

This occured exactly 29 minutes ago. They are sounding the tsunami warning up in Hokkaido. (Think geographically if Tokyo were Atlanta, Georgia, then Hokkaido would be Rhode Island).

Pretty far from Tokyo.

For Pete's sake, Western Honshu is on the other side of the archipelago from Hokkaido.

That is from two days ago. It is now Friday a.m. in Japan.
