Here's my response:
I have been a critic of the government of Israel on this issue in the past.
I am now satisfied that the matter is closed and that the defense of IDF action made by the government of Israel is full and accurate.
But no anti-Semite will ever be convinced. They will just say that the US gov't is controlled by "The JOOZ" and that this is an ongoing part of some conspiracy.

I will trust the words of the men who served on that ship rather than our government or that of Israel's.

Israel didn't sink anything. They tried to sink the Liberty but she remained afloat.

"New documents released this week by America's National Security Agency support Israel's version of a long-festering controversy between the two countries"I didn't think it was a "long festering controversy". It always struck me that the Palestinians and Arabs made more out of that incident than either the US and Israel did.

The Liberty was not sunk, it was attacked with full knowlege that it was an an American ship. I am a Christian Zionist and "Haaretz" can pound sand, Labour Party sand at that.
I have been following this thing since 1967, it was a political act done for what ever reason, no amount of misdirection will absolve whomever made the descision.

The writer of this garbage is a terrible researcher. He started out with this lie/miss statement:
U.S. agency confirms sinking of USS Liberty was accident!
The Liberty was not sunk. After reading his opening statement, I refused to read any more of his bs! Is this guy Jayson Blair with a pseudo name?

Maybe this will finally shut up some of the hyperpatriot-wannabe idiots on this very web site who continually bring this up, even thought it's been debunked time and time again.
You know who you are!

They had no idea what they were trying to sink:
"Pay attention. The ship is now identified as Egyptian," the pilots were told.
"Clarify by the first man that you bring up, what nationality he is, and report to me immediately,"
Considering the circumstances, I don't blame them. It wasn't murder, it was self defense. Their nation was on the line.

Why doesn't someone poll the survivors? At this late point most are no doubt out of the military and free to tell their individual stories.
It doesn't get any better than first person accounts.

"Those who hate Israel, who hate Jews, and those who believe in conspiracy will not be convinced by anything." I don't hate Israel or hate Jews and I don't like to be accused of such. I am 1/2 Jewish myself. I also don't think of myself as much of a conspiracy theorist. Nevertheless I believe the men who were on that ship over those who have political reasons for covering up the truth.
"Pay attention. The ship is now identified as Egyptian," the pilots were told.
These tapes, coming after the multiple attacks, could just be the initial step in the cover-up. They do not prove that the Israeli units making the attack and their commanders did not know the ship was American.
To: Courier
How do we know that the helicopter pilots weren't part of an Israeli deception operation, either as a planned element of the attack, or an after-the-fact hastily thrown together CYA move. The Israelis are certainly capable of it.
And no, I'm not an anti-Semite - I sympathize with Israel for the most part, because I believe our interests are coincident, and because I admire the fortitude of Israeli citizens and soldiers in the face of long-standing adversity. But only a fool would believe that, when those interests diverge, they would place American interests above their own. To those fools, I have only one word to say: "Pollard."

Well, I am pro-Israel, but I think it was attacked on purpose. I'm not excusing it, but the reason for attacking it was that Lyndon Johnson was about to interfere, yet again, against Israel at a critical moment, and the Israelis attacked the ship in order to cut off Johnson's ears, as it were, and give themselves a little more time to achieve their military objectives.
That was a terrible thing to do, but on the other hand the United States has done some pretty terrible things to the Israelis.
The honorable thing would be to admit the sins on both sides and try to behave better in the future, but Socialists seem to have an absolute compulsion to cover things up. For that matter most governments tend to cover things up, and the Bush government is not exempt.
