Editorial: Indian nicknames / They're still offensive and needless

The Star Tribune newsroom will now call sports teams by their chosen names, including Indian nicknames, as editor Anders Gyllenhaal explained in a column published Sunday. That's best, for newsrooms should reflect reality as accurately as possible. But it's also reality that Indians do not like the use of "Braves" and "Redskins" and other nicknames that have been appropriated by sports groups. The teams themselves should drop them.

I propose that everyone named Bill in Buffalo protest that their names are being for a mediocre football team.
Should of read:

The Seminole Tribe endorses Flordia State's use of their name (and even sends a brave to throw down the spear at every home game) because they never surrendered to the white man.
IIRC, Florida State pays the tribe for the use of the name. Follow the money, to quote El Rushbo.

I'm, oh, I don't know, something like half-Cherokee, I think a quarter from each side. There are those of us who are significantly Indian by heritage, and there are those who are "professional" Native Americans. These are the people who run around looking for things to be offended about.

Methinks the Minnesota Indians are doing quite well, thanks.

At our local Renfest this season, I am portraying a noble Native American, and I need a good name.
I'm considering "Dances on Tables."

I agree with your point. FWIW, The Syracuse Orangemen was a reference to the Indian heritage of the region. The proud Saltine Warrior, (Syracuse=Salt City), mounted on horseback, had to give way to the ridiculous stuffed orange mascot you now see, due to cave-in to political correctness.

"The Fighting Whites basketball team was organized in early February (2002) by a group of Native American and non-Indian students of the University of Northern Colorado.."
Too funny.
I am deeply offended (not).

Didn't you know? The oh-so-superior liberal do-gooders are the protectors...overseers...and, really, owners...of anyone who cannot look after their own interests (e.g., anyone other than Evil White MenTM).

They got huge volumes of orders from white people wanting that shirt. It totally backfired on them and they lost the point at which they were trying to make.

Being of Norwegian descent myself, I agree wholeheartedly. I've never been able to understand this argument. No one is going to name a sports team after something they DON'T admire.
To: presidio9
I can understand why some hypersensitive losers could find "Redskins" offensive, but I can not for the life of me understand what is offensive about "Braves". I thought naming a team after a group of people was bestowing an honor upon them, not insulting them. I just don't get it. Whiny liberal losers....get a life!

No, I but I have a good idea about what Yankee Doodle refers to (hint: in the Colonies, there were seven men for every one woman -the Brits were insulting us).

They wouldn't use that term when describing the Cleveland Indians until recently, and now it's all over their article.

I'm offended by the multitude of odd names that the urban culture chooses for their children. Shall we force them to change their names?
