Letter to the editor: Coalition made up of fascists, opportunist

March 28, 2003

Dear Editor,

After reading Rebecca Feldman Secia's 'Your Turn' column, I'm torn between laughing out loud and burying my head in my hands in anguish.

Let's examine U.S. military action based on its allies, beginning with Spain.

Before joining the current ruling party, Aznar, the leader of Spain and close supporter of Bush, was a member of the neo-fascist party.

Then there's Denmark, which has a fascist government.

Italy has a government corrupt to a fault and xenophobic enough to be fascist.

Visit the Web site of your State Department (http://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/hrrpt/2001/eur/8358.htm) to find out about Turkey. Our State Department says Turkey has submitted unconvicted detainees to the following:

"Systematic beatings; stripping and blindfolding; exposure to extreme cold or high-pressure cold water hoses; electric shocks; beatings on the soles of the feet (falaka) and genitalia; hanging by the arms; food and sleep deprivation ... In some cases, multiple torture methods (e.g. hanging and electric shocks) are employed at the same time. Other methods used are forced prolonged standing, isolation, loud music, witnessing or hearing incidents of torture, being driven to the countryside for a mock execution, and threats to detainees or their family members ... "

It goes on and on.

That's not even mentioning the "ethnic cleansing" of 1.2 million Armenians by the Turkish military. We just gave Turkey another $8 billion on top of the $15 billion in aid we already gave them.

We've been courting Turkey since this whole thing started. The Turkish military has committed more atrocities than Saddam, and we kiss Turkey's ass. Why is that, Ms. Secia?

Does it seem odd when you realize most of our "Coalition of the Willing" is composed of opportunistic countries (like Central Europe, with the exception of Poland), fascists, or countries where most of the population is not "willing" to support its government when it supports this foolish war?

you can pick your friends but you cant pick your enemies, this phrase comes to mind. They're allies for a reason, they all contribute something to america, its a token alliance, they never do anything but we either gain financial or intelligence backing in allying ourselves with them... Let us do our job and you just keep eating twinkies like a good little idiot.

I cannot agree with your overall view on the matter. In times of war, one should support the troops and the political blood letting so to speak should be left until after the war.

Where I would agree, is your views on Turkey.

"You Reap What You Sow"

IF you look at what has happened with Saddam, he was supported by the US and other middle east allies against Iran and look what happened. UBL was supported by the US and her allies against the Russians and look what happened.

If we are going to have a moral war, built on principal, then we have to "Walk the Talk" and do not do deals with countries or individuals that will come back to haunt us in the future.

If the allies "Walk the Talk" then it is much easy for everyone around the world to support them and also to sleep at night.

Like all liberals and extremists it pays to be selective when getting your point across.

"Senior"

Pretty much sums it up. A poor example of educating our young these days.

Notice he has nothing to say about New Europe and the other struggling young democracies - only Turkey.

Name one country that doesn't act in it's own best interests? Name one country that doesn't play politics?

Denmark is neo-fascist? Please look carefully into the meaning of the word. If you then still think that Denmark is neo-fascist, please cite your sources.

Also: Is France opportunistic? Think.

John, you have been lead far, far astray. Come home.

Well I cannot name any, they all do, but we should not do so to the detrement of future generations by dealing with thugs and Tyrants.

Financial gain should not be the only factor, when deciding who we do dealings with.

When George Bush holds prayer meeting in the White House, he is seen to be taking the high moral ground. Therefore all I am saying is, the country should then walk the talk (as should all countries).

If we say do not sell WMD to tyrants, then if we find WMD supplied by the allies countries, then legal action should be taken against these companies and any minister that has authorised such contracts. This should also refer to non allies as well, like France, Germany, Russia and China.

I guess because, between them, the Aussies and the uks have provided only about 99.999999999% of the tangible support -- and he wanted to appear to be even handed? To be fair to all of the others?
