A Phenomenal Career Suicide

A PHENOMENAL CAREER SUICIDE [Rod Dreher]

This Dixie Chicks thing is getting very, very serious for the group. Mind you, I'm not a big one for boycotts; if I threw away CDs of artists whose politics I couldn't stand off my shelf, there'd be very little left to listen to (a reader wrote to say she'd taken her child to hear the great kids' musician Dan Zanes play recently, and he shared his anti-war politics with preschoolers. Asinine!). However, I completely understand country fans wanting to rebuke severely the Dixie Chicks for that disgraceful comment Natalie Maines made on foreign soil. This thing is turning into something huge. Read what reader Dave in Georgia wrote to me this morning:

Here in the Red Zone, the imminent demise of the Dixie Chicks is a topic of everyday discussion, not just a Internet thing. And every country radio DJ is being forced to take a stand. I came home yesterday, and my wife asked me if she was supposed to take her CDs to the radio station, or if I knew where she was supposed to mail them. Radio call-ins range for tearful pleas to pray for the Chicks, to heavily bleeped suggestion for new names for the group.

This thing is turning into a phenomenal case of career suicide. What on earth could Natalie Maines have been thinking, saying such an idiotic thing, given her fan base? Can anybody think of a similar case of a popular performer collapsing professionally virtually overnight because of something he or she said?

great article. I think what happens to these stars is that they get so full of themselves that they lose their basic grasp on reality.

I always said the best thing for Jacko's legacy would have been for him to have dropped dead after finishing Thriller.

The Beatles' "Bigger than Jesus" comes to mind, but they survived it. Jerry Lee Lewis' underage bride revelation as well.

Yup, they really and truly come to believe that they're important.

I keep hearing this. I wonder if it's true.

Maines' antics are NOTHING compared to those of Jane Fonda, yet Fonda had a remarkable career.

OTOH, country music fans are a different sort.

It may well be that the "Chicks" go mainstream pop from here on out. Brittney Spears could compare Bush to Hitler, and the popsters would keep buying her cr*p.

Indeed, what could she have been thinking, period? It is a trademark among liberals to take a totally innocuous situation and use it as a platform to express their leftist views. Just look at the time and place in which George Clooney decided to make his remarks concerning Charleton Heston's Alzheimer's. These type people love being in-your-face with their views, but really love to whine when someone is in their faces with contrary views.

The Blixie Twits is an amazing case of career suicide. natalie never quite learned the simple marketing 101 concept: the market is consumer driven. Dumb fat bimbo!

We now have our young men going off to battle, with a willingness to sacrifice their lives for our freedom, so "little traitor Dixie chick" does not look very cute to us.

There are two words that Natalie should have learned from the get-go: ALEC BALDWIN.

I think, pretty soon, we can add George Clooney to that list.

If you can explain to me why this never happened to Jane Fonda, but will happen to these folks, I'd be interested to hear.

The difference is, with Britney Spears demographic, an explanation of who Bush and Hitler are would be in order. If like, fer sure, they don't appear on the pages of Seventeen, the recognition may be lost.
