Thirty- four volunteers including two new recruits from California spent the weekend patrolling the Cochise County border with Mexico over the past weekend. Civil Homeland Defense concluded its most productive - yet most terrifying weekend to date with forty-three illegal invaders peacefully and humanely turned over to Border Patrol. Another approximately 80 border intruders who ran and pelted members with rocks were not so peaceful or humane in their attempt to escape capture by Border Patrol agents. All intruders were located and reported to Border Patrol, all eighty were apprehended and returned to Mexico. The community of Palominas experienced what was virtually an all out invasion over the weekend. Friday night the roads were bustling with Border Patrol vehicles driving everywhere in an attempt to keep up with the hundreds that were moving up the San Pedro river basin; the trend continued for three straight days and nights. All weekend helicopters were buzzing in the air-locating group after group of illegal intruders.
Civil Homeland Defense located a large group immediately after setting out on the first patrol of the weekend Friday evening. Seventeen were turned over without incident to Border Patrol authorities who were friendly and appreciative of our assistance. Over the scanner we could hear reports of intruders flooding the area. Other groups were spotted and their location was called in to Border Patrol headquarters in Naco. During an unarmed patrol of the San Pedro River, four members of CHD were confronted by a Border Patrol agent who must have thought we were the drug dealers he was looking for. The officer stopped his truck pulled his weapon on us and demanded that we "drop our weapons". We calmly dropped our flashlights and night vision devices and assured him that we were civilian members of Civil Homeland Defense. "Drop your weapons", he again demanded. "sir, we don't have weapons, we are the good guys, we are out here tracking a truckload of illegals who game down the (border) road", we stated. "O.K., he said, sorry - thought you were the illegals we were looking for. Let us know if you see anything else and thanks for your help." The agent re-holstered his weapon, thanked us again and drove off into the night.
Saturday morning and afternoon turned sour when Border patrol and local residents encountered another group of over 90 intruders camped along the river. The group had reportedly waited in the area for three days before they crossed. The group including women, children and one infant; the Mexican Nationals had run out of food and water- many were ill from drinking water from the river. One young boy needed immediate medical attention and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. What a sad sight they were. What is going on in Mexico? Why are we not turning our attention to Mexico's President Vicente Fox and questioning him about why his people are fleeing his country. It is time for the world to turn its attention to Mexico, a country that is obviously not caring for its citizens. Where are the human rights groups, and why are they not up in arms about the oppression and human rights violations being committed by Mexico's government?
Saturday night was no different and Palominas was overrun again with hundreds of illegals from all directions. Civil Homeland Defense members were surrounded by groups moving along the base of ridges running parallel with the river. The wooded areas along the river were crawling with people and the low grassland plains running along the river were flooded with groups attempting to enter the country illegally. You must give Border Patrol agents credit for their valiant efforts to keep up with the overwhelming flow of illegal entrants; they are faced with a tough job.
Just after sundown, things turned ugly for one member of CHD who found himself surrounded by three groups of illegals. The member of the citizen volunteer group had located a group of males who were suspected of smuggling drugs in backpacks across the grassland trails. After reporting the group to Border Patrol another group of migrants appeared on the same worn path near the river. After attempting to confront the group with our warning of Alto! La parada, esto territorio de estados unidos. Sientese, no procure correr. Sientese por favor. The group began aggressive rock throwing tactics and scattered in all directions shouting curses in clear English and flipping the member the "bird". During frantic attempts to contact Border Patrol, the member spotted another large group of about forty running along the ridge of hills that parallel the river. As the member approached the group, he was pelted with curses and large rocks thrown from an elevated position. The volunteer managed to convince a group of eleven to sit and wait for Border Patrol, the rest of the group, all young aggressive males scattered in all directions, most escaping over the hills and moving back toward the border. Fortunately, a photographer from a major newsmagazine who was accompanying the lone CHD volunteer captured the entire episode on film.
This time when Border Patrol arrived the volunteer and the photographer were met by a surly, biased Border Patrol agent of Hispanic decent who immediately began telling the photographer that he could not take pictures. Citing the first amendment and freedom of the press rights, the photographer challenged the agent who also declared that under new "rules" Border Patrol could arrest us (volunteers) for trespassing. Trespassing on what, our public lands? How absurd! The photographer challenged the Border patrol "rules" as being internal rules and not actually "laws" - he took his photos and both he and the CHD volunteer waited and watched from a distance to insure that the agent was doing his job. The agent was so biased that we feared he would release the group because he did not catch them. The officer knowing we were observing did his job, loaded the group into a vehicle, and hopefully transported them to the Naco station for processing.
Sunday evening proved no different as previous nights, as a large group of CHD volunteers spotted and reported two groups of approximately fifty invaders who were chased down and apprehended by Patrol on the river. Another large group was followed, many scattered into the hills however, fifteen intruders were stopped and turned over to friendly appreciative Border Patrol agents. While waiting with the group, four of the males became verbally aggressive and stated to two CHD volunteers that if they did not have guns, "they would be taken care of". Many in the group spoke English and were joking about the group of volunteers. "We'll be back again", one of them said.
The numbers of invaders is growing by the day. New Border Patrol agents are being brought in to the area, having just graduated from the academy in Georgia. Civil Homeland Defense is supporting Border Patrol with at least a dozen volunteers per day to help defend our borders from the invasion.
How long will it be before Governor Napolitano protects residents of Arizona and the United States by putting National Guard troops on the front lines? How long will it take Congressman Grijalva to demand that his constituents be protected with United States troops on our border? And by the way Mr. Grijalva what ever happened to the investigations you wanted to start, or have you figured out by now that there is nothing to investigate other than your pandering to Mexican officials. Perhaps you are worried about investigations into why you support our country being invaded by the people of another country? Where does your allegiance lie Mr. Grijalva? Whose side are you on? Where were you during the hearings held in Sells, AZ on the Tohono O'odham reservation? Have you abandoned your constituents already, or are you just working for your constituents in Mexico instead. You are a traitor and should be removed from office. A coalition is forming to make sure you and the other do nothing senators and congressional representatives are removed with the power of the vote during the next election. Enjoy your stay in office, for it will not last long.
Yes but there is so many other more important stories and issues, like the Elizabeth Smart saga......
