Hi all, your friendly neighborhood moderator 'Tim' here.

Yesterday there was an exchange on this thread which I would like to talk about.

To: Admin Moderator

Great song, but you stil don't get it. What I am saying, If I don't know what to search for, how can I search for it? It might have been posted in the morning, but if I don't know it was there or what it was about, how could I know what to look for? Many articles might have been of interest to me or who-ever, but we don't know that they were posted, how can we know what to search for? Your comments please. The night people are at a disadvantage here, I have been a lurker for about 8 years and this is one of my major problems with your web site.

Sorry, but the latest post page is too large to be repeated for each shift. Suggestion, start at the top and scroll down. Then when you get to the bottom of the page and have read all threads you are interested in, click on "More." Repeat until you've scanned all threads for the day. On most days there are around 500 threads in the main forum. When you finish scrolling through all of those, then you can start on the other forums.

Oh, be sure your setting is for "Threads" only. It will take forever to get through 20 to 25 thousand posts if you have it set for "Messages."

Or, maybe a volunteer or two or three will step forward to maintain a "Most Important Threads of the Day" thread.

As it turns out, we had been discussing this idea behind the curtains earlier that day. Some of us had some concerns that it would just lead to criticisms ("why was my thread not chosen", "the moderators are biased", and so on), which are very valid concerns, I believe. But I am also one who believes that the best way to find out if something will work or not often is to give it a try. And you know how when you are in a meeting and you come up with a suggestion and it becomes an action item for you? This exchange happened last night:
"Didn't [Tim] volunteer to" do it?

By golly, I think he did.

Jim

So I'll give it a try for a day or two as time allows and we will see how it goes. I'll post a thread like this, we'll park it in the Front Page, and when I see a thread that I think is a highlight, I will plop it in here. If you think a thread should be a highlight, you can post a link to it on this thread- preferrably with a brief reason why it is a highlight. I may add it to the top, or I may not, depending on if I agree and if I am around and if I have the time and if I am not beseiged by a swarm of rabid locusts. But even if I do not add it to the top, by posting a link to it to this thread, those who read this thread will see your recommendation.

I don't know how this will play out over time, but I would imagine that if people do post their recommendations for highlights to the thread, Jim will get a good feel for who would be good at choosing highlights (in his opinion) and he could get a group together to take this task over from me - when stuck as a volunteer, plan an exit strategy :-).

Hopefully this will work out. If not, then it can always be discontinued, after I am taunted severely.

Thanks, AM

This is an excellent idea, and will be invaluable to Freepers who want to keep up with the most important stories of the day. These should be bumped throughout the day, or reposted every couple of hours, if necessary.

Kudos Jim!

Very helpful, like a better sidebar. I wish there was more cheering. Good work! Count mine as another important approval. Believe me, this would become very popular here.

Fantastic idea and great follow-through!

I saw this idea this morning and wondered how it would be maintained as the day went on. I agree, great follow-through!

This is just a great idea. I tried to say this earlier, but I was unable to post for most of the day. I began to wonder. :-)
