Dem-eat-Dem for president

Just 10 months before their presidential primary contests begin, the Democrats are bitterly split over warring with Iraq and the Rev. Al Sharpton's brand of racially polarizing politics.

The Democrats' long-dormant anti-war forces have been reawakened by President Bush's drive to topple Saddam Hussein. This renewed opposition is splitting the party in two. Ultra-liberal presidential contenders like Mr. Sharpton, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun and Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich are beating the anti-war drums, in the belief the issue can lead to the nomination, as it did for Sen. George McGovern in 1972 in the midst of the Vietnam War.

"The doubts Democrats worked so hard to dispel in the 1990s — that they loved government and taxes too much, and cared about (national) security and values too little — have returned,"

Those aren't doubts, they're facts.

But others call the latest reaction to Mr. Sharpton, who is not going to be the party's nominee, over the top and hysterical. Veteran Democratic strategist Harold Ickes says black voters will "not want to throw their vote away and will vote for a candidate who can win the nomination and the election."

Ickes says black voters won't throw their vote away by voting for somebody who can't win. Why not? Republicans did that when they elected Clinton by voting for Perot and Buchanan.

I look at the fractiousness of the Democrats, and their internecine contests for voting blocs and over racial and ethnic loyalties, and I smile and remind myself of the words of Bertrand Russell:
Reason is a small force, but it is constant, and works only in one direction, while the forces of unreason destroy one another in futile strife. Thus every orgy of unreason in the end strengthens the friends of reason, and shows afresh that they are the only true friends of humanity.

The behind the scenes dealings within the Democrat party (and loyalists in the media) that are designed to derail Sharpton will come back to haunt them.

The 95% block they have counted on is in jeapordy, and once the picture is painted of Democrats trying to derail Sharpton and deliberatly blocking Estrada, their 2-faced racial policies will be exposed as well.
