A few weeks before the Democrats moved into the White House in 1993, Vice President Dan Quayle told me the defeat that stung the most, aside from that suffered by the Bush/Quayle ticket, was Bruce Herschensohn's loss to Barbara Boxer in California's Senate race.

I don't yet know what to make of the GOP's chances in California in 2004 for Boxer's seat. I can think of several things off the top of my head that are going to be required of the Republican nominee: moderate on certain issues, well-funded, willing to ATTACK Boxer head-on, supported by the White House, etc. California is an expensive media state and the cost of winning a campaign there will probably be upwards of $30 million. I would have to say that Doug Ose is probably the "frontrunner" at this point. He is a moderate Republican and seems to have the verbal ability necessary to take on someone as combative as Boxer. My main drawbacks on Ose is that the GOP would probably lose his House seat if he runs and I'm also not quite sure if he is capable of raising the kind of money he will need to win. My personal favorite as a possible candidate in this race is U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin. I must admit that I know very little about Marin, but what I do know I like and she has many favorable characteristics that could help her against Boxer. First off, she's an Hispanic woman that could easily eat into two of Boxer's strongest voting blocks. Secondly, she would surely have the full support of the White House behind her if she decided to run and that would be a huge plus in the fund-raising department. Outside those two, I don't really think anyone else would stand a chance of beating Boxer. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see someone like Chris Cox beat Boxer, but I just don't think a true-blue conservative like Cox stands much of chance in the California of today, even against a hard-line liberal like Boxer who alienates even some moderate Democrats and most Independants.

Doug Ose = Tom Campbell, Part Deux. Stick a fork in this race, its done. Babs got nuttin' to worry about, she'll be sitting on her commie red arse in the Senate until JEB Bush's second inaugural in January 2011.

I worked on Bruce Herschensohn's campaign that year, walking and calling the precincts around San Gabriel, San Marino, and South Pasadena. Bruce is an extremely bright man with well-thought-out positions. I still have the white papers he put out during the campaign. He used to tear former Senator Tunney apart on ABC Channel 7 in Los Angeles. I wrote him a letter after the defeat urging him to stay active in politics because the Republican party needed his "voice." I got a very nice personal letter back that I have also saved. Bruce hooked on with a think tank at Clairmont Men's College. I think he still might be there.

You mean appeal to the moderate and leftist wings of the GOP. There hasn't been a Conservative Republican Senator since Sam Hayakawa, succeeded by 2 Country-Club RINOs, Pete Wilson and John "Who ?" Seymour. Bruce Herschensohn was the only Conservative nominated since. Our biggest problem is trying to come up with someone who can not only match Boxer the Bitch in bucks, but in bravado. She is (to quote that bondage-fetish girl on Joe Millionaire) a "mercenary." She takes no prisoners and is probably the single most vicious woman (or man) in politics (I believe even MORE so than Hillary). This is no small order for a party whose nominee goes running under a rock when a 'Rat yodels "racist/anti-choicer/yada yada yada" at them. It's a joke.

These canidates seem okay, but the question is, how are they at campaigning? Can they cut it? Some people, may be qualified, but just can't campaign or play the game to save there lives. By the way, on an interesting, but useless sidenote. Denise Brown (yep, sister of Nicole, who O.J. killed), has talked about running for senate (she is registered as a republican), however, she "respects California's 2 senators, and doesn't wish to run against them, but will consider it". It took a news station about 30 seconds to note that if she ran,it would be extremely difficult for her to get any kind of support from the black vote.

Let's face it. In a presidential year -- and California with the way it is currently -- I regret to say that Boxer will not be defeated by any Republican candidate. She will get the women's vote (especially the integral white women), the Latino vote, the Black vote, and the Jewish vote.
